    OET (ALL PROFESSIONS) READING OVERVIEW

    Introduction

Like OET Listening, the OET Reading examination is not profession specific and can be any topic of general healthcare/medical interest. It consists of three parts (Part A, B and C).

    Skimming and Scanning

The OET reading test requires candidates to read and understand a variety of texts in limited time and to answer questions to demonstrate that understanding. It is therefore important to use the techniques of skimming and scanning to make the most effective use of your time.

Skimming means reading a text very quickly to get the general meaning (also called the gist), as you might do when looking through a newspaper to find an interesting article. Scanning refers to finding specific information within a text eg. finding the time of the next train or what’s on at the local cinema, etc. There is no mystery to these techniques – you will doubtless use them in your own language, so you can do the same when you read in English. When taking the exam, once you have found where the information you need is located, you will of course have to read the text more closely to get a detailed understanding.

Here are some strategies you can use:

    • Use the cues in the texts to help you: pay particular attention to the headings and sub-headings of texts, charts, tables, illustrations etc.

    • Read the first and last sentence of each paragraph and also the final paragraph, which is likely to contain the summary and conclusions.

    • Don’t stop if there is a word you don’t know. If it is a key word, try to guess the meaning from the context, otherwise just pass over it.

    • While you are skimming, it can be helpful to highlight or underline the key information eg names, dates and other content words.

    Scanning

    • If you are looking for specific information, look quickly through the text for the
