The book will provide you with an overview of the Reading section of the OET exam and will guide you through the skill.
Sets of each part (A, B and C) of the Reading Test are included at the level that the test makers at the Occupational English Test require. We explain what the examiners are expecting of you and provide examples of test like questions that you can do to help with your preparation.
There are a number of people we would like to thank for their contributions to this book. Our thanks go to our colleagues at IELTS Medical LTD and our local Trust hospitals for their support and guidance whilst producing this book.
Thanks also go to friends and colleagues who gave suggestions on improvements. Your comments have been much appreciated. We would especially like to thank our first and second cohorts of OET doctors and nurses who were our willing pioneers once this exam was accepted by the GMC and NMC in the UK.
We sincerely hope that you find this book valuable for your OET preparation and wish you the very best moving forward.
As always: To your success.

OET (ALL PROFESSIONS) READING OVERVIEW
Introduction
Like OET Listening, the OET Reading examination is not profession specific and can be any topic of general healthcare/medical interest. It consists of three parts (Part A, B and C).
Skimming and Scanning
The OET reading test requires candidates to read and understand a variety of texts in limited time and to answer questions to demonstrate that understanding. It is therefore important to use the techniques of skimming and scanning to make the most effective use of your time.
Skimming means reading a text very quickly to get the general meaning (also called the gist
), as you might do when looking through a newspaper to find an interesting article. Scanning refers to finding specific information within a text eg. finding the time of the next train or what’s on at the local cinema, etc. There is no mystery to these techniques – you will doubtless use them in your own language, so you can do the same when you read in English. When taking the exam, once you have found where the information you need is located, you will of course have to read the text more closely to get a detailed understanding.
Here are some strategies you can use:
Skimming
• Don’t attempt to read every word or sentence – just look quickly down the page to get the general idea.
• Use the cues in the texts to help you: pay particular attention to the headings and sub-headings of texts, charts, tables, illustrations etc.
• Read the first and last sentence of each paragraph and also the final paragraph, which is likely to contain the summary and conclusions.
• Don’t stop if there is a word you don’t know. If it is a key word, try to guess the meaning from the context, otherwise just pass over it.
• While you are skimming, it can be helpful to highlight or underline the key information eg names, dates and other content words.
Scanning
• If you are looking for specific information, look quickly through the text for the
