The effects of social life on academic performance and their capability of being a

leader of gr.11 STEM students in HAU

Introduction

“I have never let my schooling interfere with my education.”-mark twain. Education

is entirely different from schooling. Others said that social life may interfere with one’s

academics. Holy Angel University has a big diversity among students. Social interactions

amongst students are evident in this university due to the diversity and the density of

population. This makes students inclined to social life but of course not all. This gives a

lot of opportunity for students to have social life. Activities and events are also conducted

in the university which gives way for students to know more about their school and other

students .With this big factor, the researcher are planning to study how this social life

affects the student’s academic performance and their capability of being a leader.

Social and behavior interventions would boost the social skills of the student,

increase their ability to stay focus in the classroom and improve peer and teach binding

which are likely to increase academic performance( flemong, Haggerty, Catalano,

Harachi, Mazza & Gruman, 2005). Social skills gain some popularity on increasing the

ability of the student to comprehend during classroom sessions. Social interactions

between student to student and student to teacher proves a positive effect on their social

skills as well in academics.

Each people have their own social life and circle of friends. Social life have effects

on students that causes good and bad things. The importance of this research it to identify

these causes to the students in their academic performance and their leadership
capabilities. To make students aware about the causes of social life and to change their

mind set about this and to take this seriously.

The researchers believe that when a student is socially inclined, they believe that

the student will get a successful life in the future because the student have a lot of friends

that can help him/her in near future. (Fleming, Haggerty, Catalano, Harachi, Mazza &

Gruman, 2005). Considering this statement, the researchers can say that friends are also

companions. “No man is an island” by john donne; a famous line which states that a man

can not stand by its own. It can not create a system that only revolves around him. He/she

can not provide all his/her necessities by herself/himself. Friends in the future can be a

great help because their experiences will serves a lesson to you; avoiding further

mistakes.

Past arguments surrounding social and behavior interventions would boost the

social skills of the student, increase their ability to stay focus in the classroom and improve

peer and teach bonding , which are likely to increase academic performance. (Manning,

2007) Targeting the improvement of high self-concept is important because it promotes

academic and future life successes of the students. With this factors and past studies;

social life will affect the academic performance of students and their capability of being a

leader.
