SPA C SPA C SPAC SPAC
The RMFA is intended exclusively for generating liquid foam and analyzing foamability and
foam stability in accordance with ASTM D 1173
SPA C SPA C SPAC SPAC
Intended use includes the exclusive use of accessories supplied by KRÜSS or substitutes with
an identical design in the case of disposable accessories.
SPA C SPA C SPAC SPAC
Measurements above or below room temperature may only be used with the aid of flow-
through thermostats that are suitable for laboratories. The permissible temperature range
lies between 4 and 90 °C.
SPA C SPA C SPAC SPAC
Some of the housing components of the RMFA are not resistant against acids, bases or
organic solvents. KRÜSS does not accept any guarantee for damage due to escape or
spillage of such liquids. The same applies to damage due to corrosive vapours.
SPA C SPA C SPAC SPAC
The intake vessel and reservoir of the measuring column are not suitable for chemical
reactions or filtering.

Technical Support
Therefore, read this chapter carefully to find out about the risks and how to avoid them before
commissioning and using the RMFA.
SPA C SPA C SPAC SPAC
As well as these general safety instructions, please follow the safety instructions and warning
information in the remainder of the documentation text.
SPA C SPA C SPAC SPAC
If the RMFA and its accessories are not used in accordance with this documentation, the
effectiveness of safety measures provided can be impaired.
SPA C SPA C SPAC SPAC
The RMFA is intended for use in a laboratory or pilot plant station. The general safety rules
for working in a laboratory environment apply to work carried out with the RMFA.
SPA C SPA C SPAC SPAC
When carrying out measurements with hazardous substances the safety regulations and, if
available, information in the appropriate safety data sheets must be taken into account when
handling such substances.
SPA C SPA C SPAC SPAC
When carrying out measurements with hazardous substances, the RMFA must be placed at a
location which is appropriately configured for that purpose.
SPA C SPA C SPAC SPAC
The controls of the RMFA and a connected computer must not be operated when wearing
protective gloves, which have already been used for handling hazardous materials.
SPA C SPA C SPAC SPAC
Disconnect the RMFA from the power supply immediately if there is any damage to the
electronics, if liquids are spilled over the RMFA or if there is an escape of tempering fluid.
SPA C SPA C SPAC SPAC
Set up the RMFA so that access to the mains connection is unrestricted and the RMFA can
be disconnected from the mains immediately in the event of danger.
SPA C SPA C SPAC SPAC
If hazardous substances are used improperly, liquid or foam can escape which may result in a
certain danger level depending on the hazard class.
Ensure that no liquid escapes and that no foam spills over the lip of the measuring column.
Be sure to read the safety instructions and safety data sheets for handling hazardous
substances before use. Use an installation site that has been set up for hazardous
substances.
Observe the measuring column during foaming, and prevent foam from escaping in good
time by closing the inlet stop tap.
The measuring column and the dosing burette can break if incorrectly handled. This can cause
injuries due to cuts.
Take care when installing and removing the column in the RMFA. Ensure that the dosing
burette is not placed onto the column. No part of the column must hit the RMFA during
installation or removal of the column. During installation and removal, ensure that the
column securing mechanism is open and the LED strip and line sensor elements are pushed
to the side. Close the column securing mechanism immediately after installing the column.
Remove all broken glass that may be present in a safe way (with cut-resistant gloves or a
suction device).
2.1.4 Safety instructions for using the measuring column in heating mode
If a flow-through thermostat is used, the temperature of the outer surfaces of the measuring
column can reach up to 90 °C in heating mode. Touching the outer surfaces of the measuring
column can cause burning.
Use heat-resistant safety gloves in heating mode, particularly when touching the measuring
column, the temperature control connections or the stop taps. Allow the measuring column
to cool down before removing it.
Warning information designated by yellow symbols with keywords describes the severity of the
consequences that could occur if the measures for avoiding the hazard are not followed:
SPA C SPA C SPAC SPAC
CAUTION means that slight to medium severity harm could occur to personnel.
SPA C SPA C SPAC SPAC
Warning information designated by the blue key word NOTICE does not have an identifying
symbol.
3.2 Function
After inserting the measuring column into the RMFA (and possibly connecting a flow-through
thermostat), 50 mL of the test liquid is admitted through the upper reservoir of the dosing
burette into the lower inlet vessel of the Ross-Miles measuring column. For subsequent foaming,
another 200 mL of the test liquid is admitted into the upper reservoir, which is initially shut off.
After the ADVANCE software has been started, these 200 mL of test liquid are released from the
reservoir from above onto the 50 mL of test liquid in the inlet vessel.
The measuring column is located between the LED strip element and the line sensor element on
the column shell. The line sensor measures the light transmitted through the measuring cylinder
over its entire height.
Phase detection
The gas phase above the foam and (usually) the liquid is permeable to light, whereas the foam
column absorbs some of the emitted light. The two phase boundaries, liquid/foam and foam/air,
are detected using the measured brightness differences.
Foam height
The foam height results from the difference between the total height and the height of the
liquid:
With opaque liquids, only the upper foam boundary is usually detected, meaning that only
the total height can be measured. In spite of this limitation, many important foam
parameters can be measured.
Both the foaming process and the decay of the foam are observed when a measurement is
carried out. Individual images are read out by the line sensor for the entire duration of the
measurement. In this way, the foam and liquid height are measured as a function of time.
When foaming takes place by letting an amount of liquid drop into a reservoir, the total height
(foam height + liquid height) increases because of the added liquid and the foam produced.
During the decay process, the liquid height initially increases because of drainage, until
becoming constant.
For carrying out an automated measurement according to ASTM D 1173, it is assumed that the
point in time tmax where the maximum foam height occurs coincides with the completed outflow
of the added solution. The timer is set to zero (t0) when the maximum is detected so that the
maximum foam height is also the initial foam height. The further height values according to
ASTM D 1173 then refer to t0 + 180 s and t0 + 300 s.
Since the RMFA is capable of measuring not only the total height but also the height of the
liquid level, it is possible to calculate a drainage-corrected foam height which takes the changing
liquid level into account. These results are shown in addition to results according to
ASTM D 1173 when the measurement is finished.
