Overview of the RMFA page 13

3 Overview of the RMFA

The RMFA makes it possible to examine the foaming behavior of liquids and foam stability in
accordance with ASTM D 1173.

3.1 Components of the instrument

The RMFA consists of a housing unit and the Ross-Miles measuring column (measuring column
and dosing burette). The housing unit has two mounted tripods, to which an LED strip element
for lighting is attached on the right, and a line sensor element for measuring the amount of light
shining through is attached on the left. These two elements are swiveled outwards in order to
install the measuring column, and both elements are swiveled inwards again to support the
vertical measuring column. In order to secure the measuring column, a column securing
mechanism is also attached to the top ends of the tripods, a swiveling mechanism for securing
the vertical measuring column.

3.2 Function
After inserting the measuring column into the RMFA (and possibly connecting a flow-through
thermostat), 50 mL of the test liquid is admitted through the upper reservoir of the dosing
burette into the lower inlet vessel of the Ross-Miles measuring column. For subsequent foaming,
another 200 mL of the test liquid is admitted into the upper reservoir, which is initially shut off.
After the ADVANCE software has been started, these 200 mL of test liquid are released from the
reservoir from above onto the 50 mL of test liquid in the inlet vessel.

The measuring column is located between the LED strip element and the line sensor element on
the column shell. The line sensor measures the light transmitted through the measuring cylinder
over its entire height.

page 14 Overview of the RMFA

3.3 Foam height measurement measuring principle

Phase detection

The gas phase above the foam and (usually) the liquid is permeable to light, whereas the foam
column absorbs some of the emitted light. The two phase boundaries, liquid/foam and foam/air,
are detected using the measured brightness differences.

Foam height

The foam height results from the difference between the total height and the height of the
liquid:

Foam height = Total height – Liquid height.

 With opaque liquids, only the upper foam boundary is usually detected, meaning that only
the total height can be measured. In spite of this limitation, many important foam
parameters can be measured.

KRÜSS GmbH | Borsteler Chaussee 85 | 22453 Hamburg | Germany | www.kruss.de

Overview of the RMFA page 15

Timing and evaluation of the foam experiment

Both the foaming process and the decay of the foam are observed when a measurement is
carried out. Individual images are read out by the line sensor for the entire duration of the
measurement. In this way, the foam and liquid height are measured as a function of time.

Schematic diagram of a Ross-Miles measurement

When foaming takes place by letting an amount of liquid drop into a reservoir, the total height
(foam height + liquid height) increases because of the added liquid and the foam produced.

During the decay process, the liquid height initially increases because of drainage, until
becoming constant.

For carrying out an automated measurement according to ASTM D 1173, it is assumed that the
point in time tmax where the maximum foam height occurs coincides with the completed outflow
of the added solution. The timer is set to zero (t0) when the maximum is detected so that the
maximum foam height is also the initial foam height. The further height values according to
ASTM D 1173 then refer to t0 + 180 s and t0 + 300 s.

Since the RMFA is capable of measuring not only the total height but also the height of the
liquid level, it is possible to calculate a drainage-corrected foam height which takes the changing
liquid level into account. These results are shown in addition to results according to
ASTM D 1173 when the measurement is finished.

9 Cleaning
Cleaning the Ross-Miles measuring column after or when using hazardous substances may result
in a certain danger level depending on the hazard class. The safety regulations that apply to the
handling of hazardous substances must be taken into account.

 When hazardous substances are being used, the RMFA must only be cleaned in a location
that has been set up accordingly.

 Use suitable disposal containers.

Be sure to read the safety instructions and safety data sheets for handling hazardous
substances before use.

 Do not leave liquids in the column or the dosing burette for long periods.

9.1 Cleaning the Ross-Miles measuring column

The measuring column and the dosing burette can break if incorrectly handled. This can cause
injuries due to cuts.

 Take care when cleaning the column and the dosing burette.

Remove all broken glass that may be present in a safe way (with cut-resistant gloves or a
suction device).

NOTICE
Do not use hard brushes or sponges, and do not use scouring agents or industrial
detergents.

 Do not use cleaning agents which contain surfactants for cleaning.

10 Mounting RMFA on rack (optional)

 KRÜSS recommends the use of accessory PA4601, consisting of a rack and a collection
vessel. You can use the mounted rack beneath the RMFA as a housing for the collection
vessel. The RMFA is therefore higher, and liquids can be easily removed from the measuring
column.

1. Set up the rack with the angled recess at the front.

2. Remove the measuring column from the RMFA if necessary.

 Chapter 8

3. Tilt the RMFA slightly to unscrew the screwed-in adjusting feet.

4. Place the RMFA onto the rack in such a way that the four holes in the rack are below the
corners of the RMFA.

 The angular recess of the rack should be flush with the two housing sides of the RMFA.

5. Screw the four unscrewed adjusting feet of the RMFA into the top of the rack from below in
order to connect the rack and the RMFA.

6. Adjust the RMFA vertically and horizontally using the bullseye level of the RMFA or a spirit
level. Use the rotating feet of the rack when doing this.

7. Place the collection vessel into the rack below the outlet stop tap.

8. Install the measuring column into the RMFA.

Measurements above or below room temperature may only be used with the aid of flow-
through thermostats that are suitable for laboratories. The permissible temperature range
lies between 4 and 90 °C.

 Please observe the associated instruction manual for using a flow-through thermostat.

 The inlet for the thermostat is at the bottom of the measuring column, and the outlet is at
the top. Please pay attention to the arrangement of the inlet and the outlet at the
thermostat.

 Connect the two pre-mounted quick-release couplings at the measuring column to the
relevant couplings of a flow-through thermostat that is suitable for laboratories.

1: Pre-mounted connection with quick-locks

 Disconnect the quick-lock couplings before taking the measuring column out of the RMFA.
