World War II North Africa Lesson Plan
Grade Level 9
Objective:
Students will have a understanding of World War II in North Africa and the
role the United States played in it. Students will be able to describe key
events that lead to the United States getting involved in the War in Africa
and the importance of the War in Northern Africa concerning the bigger
picture of World War II. Students will be able to label and catalog events
along with reading materials that will better help them gain an
understanding of the War.
Essential Questions:
1. What made the war in Northern Africa important in the view of American
leaders?
2. Why is oil and transportation so important in this area of the world during
this time?
3. What do you think the United States has learned from this part of the War?
4. What role does weather and geography play in this war?
5. What does a victory in Northern Africa allow the Allies to do?
9-12 benchmark 1-D. Skills: Use critical thinking skills to understand and
communicate perspectives of individuals, groups and societies from multiple
contexts
Monday: Introduction to World War II North African front. Students will read
about the North Africa and the time period before the War. Reading will
include maps which will allow students to get an idea of the geography of the
area. Students will identify key points of interest on a map, items that will be
labeled are cities, countries, body's of water including rivers and oceans.

Tuesday: Students will read on the United States role in War. Students will
begin filling in a time line that will progress thought the next three lessons.
Pictures of the War will be given out for students to identify at end of class.

Thursday: Students will be involved in a class discussion that will allow them
to develop an understanding of the War and how they are affected by the
War today. Topics will be lead toward the oil and gas industry, and technology

Friday: Quick review of the War will be given class will have a period of time
to finish up timelines that will be finished by the end of class.
