ECOSYSTEM: LIFE ENERGY

1. How do plants manufacture their own food?

- Plants manufacture their own food through a process of PHOTOSYNTHESIS.
2. What is the chemical equation for photosynthesis?
- It is said when a plant goes through photosynthesis , the combination of carbon dioxide (CO2), water (H2O), and
light energy occurs producing a carbohydrate (glucose) and oxygen (O2). Therefore, the chemical formula for
photosynthesis is 6CO2 + 6H2O + light energy = C6H1206 + 6O2.
3. Construct a graphic organizer about two (2) stages of photosynthesis. Differentiate and explain each stage.
The two stages of photosynthesis are light reactions and the Calvin cycle; light reactions take place first, forming the photo
portion of photosynthesis, while the Calvin cycle follows, completing the cycle with several steps involving
photosynthesis. Photosynthesis is defined as one process, but contains two distinct stages, which in turn break down into a
series of steps. During the steps in the light reaction stage, energy from the sun converts into chemical energy, while the
Calvin cycle brings carbon dioxide fixation.

5.

Cells convert stored energy in food into chemical energy through a process called "Cellular Respiration." One of
our cells' needs is energy which they get from broken down food that releases stored energy. Oxygen is used to
oxidize food. Glucose (sugar) is main oxidized food.
Construct a graphic organizer about the 3 stages of cellular respiration. Differentiate each and explain each stage.

The first stage of cellular respiration is glycolysis. It takes place in the cytosol of the cytoplasm. Recall that glycolysis produces two
molecules of pyruvate (pyruvic acid). These molecules enter the matrix of a mitochondrion, where they start the Krebs cycle. Electron

transport is the final stage of aerobic respiration. In this stage, energy from NADH and FADH2, which result from the Krebs cycle, is

transferred to ATP.
