FindingtheMotivationtoWrite
Aswriters,sometimeswedontfeellikewriting.Oftenit
seemsourcreativityhascrawledoff,ourinspiration
hasgoneonvacationandourbrainsjustdontwantto
bother.Ourmojohasdonearunner.Somedays,we
justdontwanttowrite.
Thisiscompletelynormal.
Writingisntjustahobbyforsome,itsadisciplined
formofartandittakesagreatdealofcommitment,
timeandhardworktodoit,soitisnosurprisethat
someofthatdisciplineandcommitmentwaversand
wobblesfromtimetotimeforvariousreasons.
Thethingtorememberisthatwewritersarenotrobots,
andsometimes,afteralongdayatwork,writingisthe
lastthingonourminds,especiallyifwehavetosortthe
kidsout,tidyup,dothedinnerandfeedthecat.
Sometimesthemindandbodyaretootired.The
motivationjustisntthere.
Lifeingeneralgetsinthewaysometimes.Thereisjust
somuchgoingonthatyoudonthavethetimeto
dedicatetowriting,oritseemsthatway,whetheritsa
fullworkloadintheofficecausingyoustressorrunning
aroundlookingafterthefamilytheschoolrun,
shopping,errands,appointmentsetc.Motivationtends
tovanishwhenwerebusywithotherthingsandother
people.

thatitdoesnthavetobeovert.Youdonthavetobeat

shouldbeverysubtle.Strategicdialogueisnotthere
toannoythereader,butrathertoenhancethenarrative
andstoryexperienceforthem.

Thereisnowrittenruleonthis,butcommonsense
shouldprevail,sodontoverdoit.Ifthemotifis

Doesmultigenrewritingreallywork?
ThisisasubjectIgetaskedaboutallthetime,
especiallyfromnewwritersanxioustowriteasmuch
aspossibleinasmanygenresaspossible,yetwhile
manywriterscananddowriteindifferentgenres,and
itsnotimpossible,tostepwitheasefromonekindto
anotherisntaseasyasitseems.
Itsawellknownfactthatwritersstartoutwritinginthe
genrethattheymostenjoyreading,andcertainlytheir
earliestinfluencesmaydrivethistendency.Ifyouenjoy
readingthrillers,itsmostlikelyyoullwriteinthat
genre,becauseyouenjoyitandunderstandit.Ifyou
enjoyreadingromancefiction,thenthelikelihoodis
thatyoullfeelcomfortablewritingromance.
Ofcourse,thereareotherthingsthatinfluencewriters.
WatchingcertaingenreofmoviesorTVshowsthat
theyenjoymayalsoinfluenceawriter.
Awriterwillalwayswriteinthegenretheyfeelmost
affinitywith,onethattheyfeelcomfortableworking
withtheonetheyenjoy.Andbecauseofthiseaseand
affinity,anauthorsvoiceandstylewillevolve
accordingly.
DoesitWork?
Itcan,butsometimesitdoesnt.
Therearemanycrossgenrewritersoutthere,people
whocaneasilydipinandoutofdifferentstyles.For
instance,horrorwritersmightalsobeabletowrite
romance.Thrillerwritersmightalsowritescifietc.But
crossgenrewritingworksonlyifthewriterfeels
comfortablewithit,theyenjoythesubjectandcanbuild
closenesswithit.
Awriterwhohatesromancewillnotbeabletowritea
convincingromancestory.Likewisearomancewriter
mightnotbeabletowriteaconvincingandscaryhorror
story.Theresultmightbesomethingcontrived,stilted
orforced.
Butoftenmanywritersdothisinthebelieftheycan
writeinanygenre,andtheresultisalwaysthesame.If
somethingdoesntfeelright,theninevitablyitisnt.The
readerswillnoticethisandtheywontenjoythestory.

authoritativelyaboutthesubject.Likewise,Idontwrite
romancestoriesbecausehavenoattractiontothe
subject,nordoIwritepoliticalstories,becauseIhave
zerointerestinpolitics.
Insteadoffocusingonwritinginasmanydifferent
genrestylesaspossibleandtryingtofitintooneof
them,writeinthegenreyoufeelmostcomfortable,one
thatyouenjoyreading,onethatyoufeelclosestto
thisisyourprimarygenre.Thisiswhatyourspecialist
subject.
Onceyourecognisethatyoucanbuildyourwriting
arounditandgainexperience(andhopefullysuccess)
fromwritingit.Youcanthenexploreothergenresthat
youfeelattractedto,orcomfortablewithorlike
reading.Thesearesecondarygenres.
Whenwethinkofsomeofourfavouriteauthors,we
usuallyassociatethemwithonespecificgenre,but
therearemanywhohavewrittennovelsincompletely
differentgenres,forinstance:

buthealsowroteChittyChittyBangBang,whichisa
childrensnovel.WethinkofStephenKingasmasterof
horror,withstorieslikeCarrieandTheShining,but
hesalsowrittencontemporarythrillerssuchasThe
GreenMile,andsciencefictionbasedstorieslike
UndertheDome.NeilGaimanisknownforhisfantasy,
scifiandgraphicnovels,buthesalsowritten
childrensstories,suchasTheGraveyardBook.
Noticethatthesewritershaveaprimarygenre,written
worksthattheyaremostfamousfor,buttheyalsohave
secondarygenres.
ButwhatifIcanonlywriteinonegenre?
Mostwriterscanprobablywritetwoorthreegenres
quitecomfortablyandsuccessfully.Otherscanonly
writeonegenreonlyandthatdoesntmakethemany
lessdifferent.
Thereisnothingwrongwithonlybeingabletowritein

theyhavebeenjustassuccessfulasmultigenre
writers.
Thethingtorememberisthatifitisasubjectyoudont
particularlylikeorunderstand,oryoudontfeelaffinity
towardsthendontwriteitbecausetheresultwillbea
terrible,forcedandunconvincingstory.Andthats
becauseyourheartwontbeinit.
