The Nature of Creativity
Creativity is a process that requires solitude in order for us to write at our best. We usually have to move into a quiet space and quiet our minds. This requires that we slow down our thoughts by either centering or simply focusing our mind so that we could do our best thinking. Writing requires that we write and allow all the other frantic aspects of our mind to stop for a while. Most of us think of so many different things every minute of the day.
Even while I am writing now, I am endlessly badgered by different thoughts. I usually write them down or dismiss them as unimportant and refocus on what I am doing.
This can take a lot of effort and concentration. For instance, at the moment I have a meowing cat beckoning for my attention. There is the sound of traffic outside of my office window. My husband just knocked on the door to say he’s taking the dog outside. But despite all of this, I am trying to remain focused in earnest. How do I do it?
One way is to refocus right away after each distraction. This can be hard to do at first, but unless you live on Walden Pond, you will have to learn to refocus and get back to the task at hand ideally within a few seconds. Focusing is a fundamental part of the nature of creativity. Without the ability to focus and refocus, there will be large gaps in your overall productivity. Yet, our minds are busy, and they don’t stop thinking because this is what our minds do.
Further, our minds are so busy because of our fast-paced life style and technology. Everything, sounds, thoughts, lights and smells keep coming at us with lightening speed. We are encouraged to move faster and faster, and do more and more every day. Yet, many times we keep stretching ourselves too far. This is probably why we feel so frazzled and exhausted all the time. It isn’t healthy for us to do so much all the time and be so busy. The same holds true for our mind. We think of so many things every minute that it is hard to focus for any length of time on any one thing.
Just now, I started thinking about my grocery list for the coming week. I cannot believe that I have so much going through in my mind as I am trying to write this chapter. Yet, I find that the longer I write, the easier it is to focus. So, the first few minutes can be the hardest. Then, as I approach the one hour mark, it becomes easier not to be as distracted because I get myself into the thinking and writing mindset.
One reason why this is the case is because the longer we could get into the habit of focusing for longer, the easier it will become for us to focus for long periods of time. That
