Middle school students Walk Out on Drugs
By NICK COHEN
The Sun
On Friday Oct. 25 at 8:15 a.m.,
the students and staff of Olson
Middle School participated in a
walk out. No panic necessary, this
walk out was for a good cause.
The entire OMS student body
took a stand against drugs by par-
ticipating in Walk Out on
Drugs. The event is a part of the
districts Red Ribbon Week, a
time when the schools encourage
students to recognize how harm-
ful drugs and alcohol can be to
their future. The district is hope-
ful that by starting drug educa-
tion at a young age, they can bet-
ter prevent future drug use.
Studies have shown that chil-
dren are interacting and experi-
menting with drugs at a younger
age. That by the time theyve
reached the high school level,
they already may have some rela-
tionship with drugs, so we want-
ed to start anti-drug programs
and education as early as possi-
ble, superintendent George Raf-
ferty said.
The Red Ribbon movement
began in 1985, after Drug Enforce-
ment Administration agent En-
rique Camarena was tortured
and killed while on duty. Accord-
ing to the National Family Part-
nership, the national sponsor of
Red Ribbon Week, parents and
young people in communities NICK COHEN/The Sun

Students walked
through a sign and were
given water bottle sets
across the country began wearing
Red Ribbons as a symbol of their
commitment to raise awareness
of the killing and destruction
caused by drugs in America.
President Obama declared Octo-
ber to be National Substance
Abuse Prevention Month in 2011,
and again in 2012 and 2013.
The students walked through a
sign that states their pledge to
keep our paws off drugs. Stu-
dents also received an anti-drug
water bottle gift set that was pur-
chased through the Tabernacle
Municipal Alliance Fund. After
the sign was obliterated by the
stampede, students completed a
loop of the school property before
returning to class. The walk itself
was a new addition to the dis-
tricts Red Ribbon Week curricu-
lum.
Our counseling staff has been
great about coming up with new
ways to teach the students and
spread the message about the
dangers of drug use, OMS staff
member Judy Endt said. This is
the first year weve done the walk
but Red Ribbon Week has been a
part of the school for a while
now.
Rafferty said that teachers and
other OMS staff are constantly
thinking of new and creative
ways to reach the students. The
walk is just another example of
those ideas coming to life.
Were always interested in try-
ing new things to better the edu-
cation of our students, whether
in the classroom or out of it, Raf-
ferty said. This is the first year
of the walk, but its something
well look to do again in the fu-
ture if we find it worthwhile.

Tabernacle Township will
work to vacate the area known as
Lenape Trail located behind
Patty Bowker Road in hopes of
settling an ongoing dispute over
the use of the property.
In the 1970s a subdivision was
created and dedicated to the town-
ship for the potential develop-
ment and expansion of that area.
The Pinelands Commission re-
stricted development on the prop-
erty, so for years it has sat vacant,
becoming what is called a paper
street. A paper street is a road or
street that appears on maps but
does not exist in reality. Paper
streets generally occur when city
planners or subdivision develop-
ers lay out and dedicate streets
that are never built. For years, the
area has been listed as a private
drive on tax maps.
In that time, the lot behind that
property has since been sold and
that has left the two property
owners unsure what they can do
on the land since it is partially
dedicated for township use.
According to township admin-
istrator Doug Cramer, the town-
ship didnt accept plans to build
the street, just the property itself.
The property owners have asked
the township to step into divide
the land between them, but
Cramer said it is not the town-
ships jurisdiction to do so. It had
hoped the two property owners
would resolve the dispute be-
tween them, but that has not hap-
pened.
If Tabernacle does vacate the
property, the land is then divided
down the middle not accounting
for either owners desires or
plans for the land. Cramer said
how the property is laid out has
been a sticking issue for the two
property owners as ones drive-
way is currently on the town-
ships portion of the land.
Both property owners were ex-
pected to comment on the com-
mittees decision to vacate the
land at the townships regular
meeting on Oct. 28.

Burlington County clerk Timo-
thy D. Tyler reported that rev-
enues generated through his of-
fice have already exceeded the
total for all of 2012, which he said
translates into good news about
the local economy as well as for
local taxpayers.
Increased revenue means
more funds in the county cof-
fers, Tyler said, and at the end
of the year, those additional
dollars can be parlayed into tax
savings in the countys 2014 budg-
et.
Over the last six years, free-
holders have managed to survive
the recession, and a very slow re-
covery, without increasing coun-
ty property taxes, Tyler said. A
trending increase in clerks fees
will help hold the line on taxes
going forward.
At the end of the third quarter,
the clerk had collected nearly $5.5
million in document recording
and other services fees or
$200,000 more than generated in
all of 2012.
When you do the math, we are
on track to generate more than $9
million this year, or $2 million
more than 2012, Tyler said.
Thats serious good news for
everyone who is looking for evi-
dence that our economy is back
on track.
Tyler noted that real estate
document recording and transfer
revenues collected by his office
are related not just to the number
of transactions, but also the
value of the properties being
bought and sold.
To view the entire revenue
report, go to the clerks webpage
at www.co.burlington.nj.us/
clerk and click on the compila-
tions link. Tyler has been post-
ing monthly revenue reports
since taking office in 2009 as part
of the countys transparency
pledge to make more information
more readily available to the pub-
lic.

Burlington Countys commit-
ment to cost-saving renewable en-
ergy moved another step for-
ward, with freeholder director
Joe Donnelly reporting that
Burlington County College, using
state grant dollars, has trained
183 individuals, consisting of
both unemployed job seekers and
those presently employed, in
green energy technology.
Our workforce development
efforts are geared toward prepar-
ing our residents for new job op-
portunities in the ever-evolving
workplace, Donnelly said. The
college is to be commended for
recognizing that sustainable en-
ergy is a rapidly developing,
high-demand field, and for pro-
viding the resources to train
many individuals. I applaud the
college for securing the $385,000
in grant funds from the State En-
ergy Sector Partnership Council
that made this program a suc-
cess.
Sixty-four people who partici-
pated in the training program
were already employed by
Hutchinson Mechanical Servic-
es, a company that specializes in
HVAC installation and repair in
South Jersey. This training, Don-
nelly said, will enable them to
secure and advance their ca-
reers.
He said that 119 of the stu-
dents were unemployed, and of
the 64 who responded to follow-up
surveys, 19 report they are now
employed. Donnelly said the
county and the college will con-
tinue to work with the others to
secure employment, and noted
that the grant dollars are also
providing for job placement as-
sistance.
Burlington County College is
proud to partner with the County
and its agencies in training work-
ers for jobs that will be a vital
part of our economic future,
said Burlington County College
president David Hespe. Theres
no question that the demand for
sustainable energy will continue
to grow, and we must take advan-
tage of this important trend.
Among the students who re-
sponded to the colleges survey
was Jim Keck of Hainesport. He
was unemployed for nearly two
years after a 28-year career in
construction. He stated the train-
ing provided up-to-date informa-
tion about energy efficiency
building, and gave him the confi-
dence he needed to regain em-
ployment as a construction su-
pervisor this summer.
It was one of the best things
that could have happened to me,
Keck said. Just taking that
course and realizing everything
upstairs was still strong and my
mind was still working. It just got
me going again.
Beyond the hands-on training
and instructional materials, par-
ticipants also had the opportuni-
ty to earn the industry-recog-
nized Building Performance In-
stitutes Residential Certifica-
tion. BPI-certified professionals
are more in demand, because
many state-run efficiency and
weatherization programs require
BPI credentials.
