Lenape TV
gets real
with We
Teach
By NICK COHEN
The Sun
While its ratings may not
match that of Keeping up with
the Kardashians or Duck Dy-
nasty, Lenape District Televi-
sions venture into the world of
reality television continued with
the second season of We Teach.
We Teach features educators
from Seneca, Lenape, Cherokee
and Shawnee high schools. The
series follows teachers through-
out their day with a focus on what
it takes mentally, physically and
emotionally to engage and capti-
vate students in the classroom, on
stage or on the field and prepare
them for success beyond high
school.
The idea started when some-
one challenged former LRHSD
superintendent Emily Capella
that teachers dont actually work
all that hard, LDTV staff mem-
ber Becky Potter said. She want-
ed to show people just how much
work a teacher is responsible for
every day. In addition to teaching

the curriculum, teachers also
serve as coaches, advisors and
mentors for numerous after-
school and extra-curricular activ-
ities.
The series takes a new ap-
proach to reality TV by spotlight-
ing an educational environment
that hopefully encourages stu-
dents to grow and learn as well as
push them toward excellence.
We Teach hopes to give viewers
an inside look at what it takes to
be a teacher who positively im-
pacts the lives of students.
The technicians ride in the
cars with the teachers in the
morning on their way to work,
Potter said. They have discus-
sions with the teachers about
what they are thinking and how
they think the day is going to go.
They are with them as they teach
all day until they return home at
night.
The show is filmed by LDTV
staff and sponsored by Metlife Re-
sources-John A. Costello, a certi-
fied financial planner. The pro-
gram highlights teachers from a
variety of departments so differ-
ent curriculums and challenges
can be featured.
Half of a teachers day makes
up an episode. Thats how much
content there is. Its our only pro-
gramming that students arent
able to participate in as they
would need to be out of class liter-
ally all day, Potter said.
LDTV first began broadcasting
in 1992, allowing students to learn
television production techniques
and assist in the production of
district programs. LDTV also of-
fers LRHSD students the opportu-
nity to broadcast sports, awards
ceremonies, graduations and
other events with the use of a mo-
bile production truck. The pro-
duction truck is a fully function-
al, professional-level production
studio that has covered various
events around the district and the
state.
We certainly didnt have any-
thing like that when I was in high
school, Potter said with a laugh.
The opportunities for students
to learn are incredible. We get so
many nice emails after they grad-
uate saying how much further
along they are than other stu-
dents at the college level because
of their time with LDTV.
To see when We Teach is air-
ing, visit the community page of
the LRHSD website. Episodes can
also be seen or downloaded any-
time from the We Teach page
on iTunes or viewed on the LDTV
YouTube channel.
LDTV is the educational access
channel of the Lenape Regional
High School District and has po-
tential viewership in communi-
ties throughout Burlington, Cam-
den and Gloucester counties. It
can be viewed on Comcast chan-
nel 19 and Verizon FiOS channel
21, as well as online at

The Sun
Election day brought a familiar face, a
face from the past and a new face altogeth-
er to the Tabernacle Board of Education.
Incumbent John Bulina, former board
member Geneva Moore and newcomer
Vicki Shoemaker defeated current board
members Stephen Pickholtz and Laura
Clapps in a tightly-contested election held
Nov. 5.
Of the 4,380 votes counted, Bulina re-
ceived 23.22 percent; Shoemaker received
22.4 percent and Moore 22.21 percent. The
three seats were for three-year terms on
the board.
Bulina, a professor at Burlington Coun-
ty College, has been a member of the board
for 25 years and now serves as the presi-
dent of the New Jersey Schools Boards As-
sociation. Though his work at the state
level is of great importance, Bulina said
his primary focus will always be the chil-
dren and families of Tabernacle.
Its really an exciting time for educa-
tion not only in Tabernacle but every-
where. Ive said this is the most exciting
time in education since Sputnik, Bulina
said. The I-STEM programs, the sustain-
ability programs within our schools are
something we are proud of.
The concerns parents and residents
raised to Bulina as well as other candidates
were similar.
All parents want the same thing for
their children. They want their kids to re-
ceive a quality education. They want their
kids to succeed and realize their potential,
and they want the schools to prepare them
for a 21st-century economy, Bulina said.
The parents are happy with the educa-
tional process in Tabernacle.
Shoemaker taught in the district for 30
years before retiring. Her two daughters
are also graduates of the Tabernacle
schools.
In recent years, I have witnessed, both
firsthand and through attending BOE
meetings, that some of what had made
Tabernacle such a desirable district com-
passion, willingness to listen and valuing
as well supporting staff has been lost. I
will work to ensure that these will once
again become important to both the BOE
and the administration, Shoemaker said.
Moore served on the board from 1981
through 1996. She spent seven of those
BOE election results in after tightly-contested race
E
very year, on Nov. 11, our coun-
try celebrates Veterans Day.
America has been honoring its
veterans around this date, in some
fashion, by some name, since 1919
the one-year anniversary of the
armistice of World War I, then known
as The Great War.
Fighting stopped between the Allied
nations and Germany on the 11th hour
of the 11th day of the 11th month in
1918. President Woodrow Wilson pro-
claimed Nov. 11 as the first commemo-
ration of Armistice Day a year later.
In 1938, the government passed an
act that made Nov. 11 an official holi-
day dedicated to the cause of world
peace and to be thereafter celebrated
and known as Armistice Day. In 1954,
after World War II and the Korean
War, Congress revised the act, replac-
ing the word Armistice with the
word Veterans.
The remembrance shifted to Oct. 25
in 1971 after some governmental con-
fusion, but was returned officially to
Nov. 11 by President Gerald Ford in
1975.
The name and date of what is now
known as Veterans Day may have
changed in the 94 years since the first
celebration, but the spirit has not.
Veterans Day commemorations are
held throughout the country, and our
local region does an excellent job of
paying homage to the servicemen and
servicewomen who have served, and
are still serving, to protect our free-
doms.
These men and women of the
Armed Forces past and present risk
their lives, day in and day out, so that
we can live the lives we enjoy today in
America. They risk their lives, day in
and day out, so that we can live better
lives in the future. They risk their
lives, day in and day out, so that people
around the world can hopefully live a
life that is free like ours.
Fighting for freedom is not always a
popular choice, and it may be debat-
able, at times, whether its even the
right choice. But that does not, and
should not, take away from the people
who serve to protect our country.
Hopefully, you commemorated Vet-
erans Day in some fashion. And hope-
fully, youll continue to honor our vet-
erans throughout the year.
Honor our veterans
With Veterans Day over, our support for those who serve should not stop
Your thoughts
How did you commemorate Veterans
Day this year? How can we continue to
honor the servicemen and service-
women throughout the year?

Veterans invited to ceremony
Burlington County Freeholder
director Joe Donnelly announced
that 200 military veterans have
been invited to participate in the
Burlington County Military Serv-
ice Medal Ceremony on Thurs-
day, Nov. 14 at 11 a.m. at the Coun-
tys Human Services Facility, 795
Woodlane Road in Westampton.
This is an important event
that recognizes county residents
who have served in the U.S.
Armed Forces and has not yet re-
ceived their county medal, Don-
nelly said. Approximately 10,000
County Service Medals have been
awarded since the program began
in 2002, but we continue to identi-
fy and reach out to those who
have not been honored.
With thousands of Veteran Ad-
ministration programs and bene-
fits available to veterans, the Divi-
sion of Military and Veterans
Services aids residents in acquir-
ing assistance and benefits such
as pensions, education, job search
support, unemployment, Depend-
ent Indemnity Compensation, VA
Health Care, VA Home Loans, vo-
cational rehabilitation, and dis-
ability compensation and sur-
vivor benefits.
Requirements for receiving a
medal are current residency in
the county and having been hon-
orably discharged from U.S. mili-
tary service. Veterans must regis-
ter and be approved to receive a
medal through the County De-
partment of Military and Veter-
ans Services.

We make it simple, thorough, and easy to understand!
Three years after its launch,
the Lenape Regional High School
Districts DEFY the Issue cam-
paign presents former NBA star
Chris Herren, national speaker
and author of Basketball
Junkie to talk to the districts
students.
Herren will share with stu-
dents the compelling and unvar-
nished story of his struggles with
substance abuse and his journey
to sobriety during presentations
in November and December at
each of the districts four high
schools.
In addition, Herren will give a
presentation geared specifically
for all parents of LRHSD students
at the Lenape Regional Perform-
ing Arts Center at 7 p.m. on Mon-
day, Nov. 18.
Herren, a basketball legend
from Fall River, Mass., realized
his dream to play for the NBA,
only to lose it all to addiction. He
has been drug- and alcohol-free
since Aug. 1, 2008.
In 2009, he launched Hoop
Dreams, a basketball player devel-
opment company and, in 2011, he
founded The Herren Project, a
non-profit foundation that assists
individuals and families strug-
gling with addiction.
According to Superintendent of
Schools Carol Birnbohm, bring-
ing Herren to the district gives
students and parents a rare oppor-
tunity to hear a first-person ac-
count of how substance abuse and
addiction can destroy the dreams
of someone who is gifted, talented
and intelligent.
Substance abuse is a serious
threat in any community and to
any type of student, including the
typical happy, well-adjusted, ac-
tive high achiever, Birnbohm
said.
Research studies by organiza-
tions including the National Insti-
tutes of Health and the National
Center on Addiction and Sub-
stance Abuse have found that sub-
stance abuse is a serious and
growing problem among teens, in-
cluding the use of prescription
drugs and pain relievers in addi-
tion to illegal drugs and alcohol.
A new trend known as Academic
Doping, the abuse of prescription
stimulants by high achieving stu-
dents, has surged nationwide over
the past two years.
Equally important, research
continues to show those teens
whose parents talk to them regu-
larly about the dangers of drugs
are 42 percent less likely to use
drugs than those whose parents
dont. However, only a quarter of
teens report having those conver-
sations.
We want every Lenape Region-
al District student and their par-
ents to hear Chris Herrens mes-
sage and have those conversations
with their children, Birnbohm
said. As a parent, Ill be at the
Nov. 18th presentation and en-
courage every parent to join me
that evening.
Tickets are $1 and can be or-
dered only online at sjtheater.com
or purchased at the door. Pro-
ceeds to benefit the DEFY the
Issue campaign. For more infor-
mation, visit www.DefyTheIs-
sue.org.
Herrens extensive visit to the
district, which includes two pre-
sentations at each high school as
well as the Nov. 18 program, is
made possible through an out-
pouring of donations, as well as a
$29,000 donation from the Lenape
Regional High School District
Foundation.

years as board president. She was
confident that her experience as
both a board member as well as
school business administrator
could serve the board of educa-
tion as well. Education today
faces many challenges, so I am
looking forward to working with
members of the Board of Educa-
tion and the community in an ef-
fort to provide the best possible
education for the students of Tab-
ernacle, while keeping the tax
rate consistent, Moore said.
Despite not serving on the
board in 17 years, Moore said she
has remained in tune with initia-
tives the district has been intro-
ducing and the challenges they
face.
Now that Im retired, Im con-
fident that I can give 100 percent
to the community. Ive been a part
of the board meetings since I was
on the board and Im excited to re-
turn. Not be a problem maker but
to give the people and students of
Tabernacle a voice on the board,
Moore said.
Moore was also quick to thank
outgoing members Clapps and
Pickholtz for their service on the
board. I wish them the best
going forward. They are great
people who served the communi-
ty well, and I thank them for their
service, Moore said.
