With contract negotiations at a
standstill, the Shamong Board of
Education and Shamong Town-
ship Education Association met
with a state-appointed mediator
for a third time Thursday, Sept. 19.
Both parties addressed the
issue at the monthly board meet-
ing on Sept. 17.
We have conducted good faith
negotiations with the STEA since
December of 2012. We have done
so while meeting with a state-ap-
pointed mediator for two sessions
and an upcoming third, board
president Melissa Ciliberti said.
The salary demands of the teach-
ers have exceeded settlements of
other districts in Burlington
County. Our hope is to reach a set-
tlement so that both parties can
focus on our primary goal, the ed-
ucation of Shamongs students.
Ciliberti said that both sides
are seeking a three-year deal, and
until one is reached, the terms of

With support from an alliance
of education advocates, Burling-
ton County College recently un-
veiled an initiative to distribute
40,000 books to children in need
throughout Burlington County.
Working with N.J. Higher Edu-
cation Secretary Rochelle Hen-
dricks, John Harmon Sr., presi-
dent and CEO, of the African
American Chamber of Com-
merce, and First Book, a nonprof-
it social enterprise that provides
new books and educational re-
sources to kids in need, BCC stu-
dents will coordinate efforts to
distribute free books to schools
and organizations serving com-
munities in need throughout
Burlington County.
The college is the first in the
nation to build this effort into its
English and Service Learning
curriculum.
Every child should have
books to read at home, Burling-
ton County Freeholder Joe Don-
nelly said. Burlington County
College will be a model for the
rest of the nation on how stu-
dents and community groups can
get books to children who need
them.
First Book is part of an educa-
tion initiative by the African
American Chamber of Com-
merce of New Jersey called
Making New Jersey More Com-
petitive. The goal is to develop
and strengthen the marketable
skills of future job seekers
throughout the state. First Book
will help achieve this goal by de-
livering new, high-quality books
and materials to children in need
in Burlington County.
This is one of a number of ini-
tiatives by our organization that

dressed in red t-shirts to signify
their unity, addressed the boards
statement.
Were looking for a fair settle-
ment, negotiations chair Laura
Hoffman said when speaking to
the board at the meeting. You
said our salary demands exceed
other settlements in Burlington
County. Well your offer has been
below those as well.
Hoffman and STEA president
Karen Clementi said they were
cautiously optimistic entering
Thursdays meeting with the me-
diator. They reiterated that they
believe what they are looking for
is fair.
Were looking for a settlement
that aligns with other districts in
the county. Our starting and end-
ing salaries are the lowest in the
Lenape sending district and weve
taken freezes that others didnt
take, Hoffman said. We too want
this taken care of so the focus can
be on our children.

will provide an immediate impact in trans-
forming the lives of our young people and
place them on a path of success, said Har-
mon.
Hendricks wants the initiative to suc-
ceed and spread throughout the state.
The initiative is an important part of
BCCs new Student Success division and
agenda aimed at helping more students
complete college and reducing the number
of students who enter college in need of
developmental courses.
We believe all students can succeed
with the right approach, BCC President
David C. Hespe said.
The simple act of giving children books
will make them stronger readers and de-
velop a lifelong passion of learning that
will help them succeed throughout their
education and career. This is also a tremen-
dous opportunity for our students to par-
ticipate in a worthwhile and rewarding
project.
The project will span the entire 2013-2014
academic year. Students will identify and
contact potentially eligible groups and en-
courage them to apply to First Book.
This spring, a truck will deliver 40,000
books with a retail value of nearly
$400,000, donated by publishers to BCCs
Mount Laurel Campus.
Students will sort the books and distrib-
ute them to groups that meet certain crite-
ria, such as serving disabled children, mili-
tary families or a large number of low-in-
come families.

PROJECT

F
all is officially here, and that
can mean only one thing. No,
not football. Or pumpkin spice
lattes. Or back to school. Or Hal-
loween. Or Thanksgiving.
Its election season!
OK, so maybe youre not as excited
as we are, but you should be. You cant
vote on the next president of the Unit-
ed States this fall that wont come for
another three years but the 2013 elec-
tion will probably have a greater im-
pact on your day-to-day life than that
anyway.
Thats because New Jerseys guber-
natorial race will highlight the Nov. 5
General Election, with incumbent Re-
publican Chris Christie taking on
state Senate Democrat Barbara
Buono.
Didnt realize this was happening?
Then you probably havent watched
any television, listened to any radio,
read any newspapers or surfed the
web at all over the last few months.
That barrage of political advertising
is only going to increase as we creep
closer and closer to election day.
The governor in New Jersey has a
much bigger impact on your day-to-
day life than the president of our na-
tion. His or her administrations deci-
sions affect you more immediately,
from the taxes you pay, to the cost of
your insurance, to the availability of
jobs, to how fast youre allowed to
drive on the highway, and so on.
Sure, the president gets more public-
ity for his actions, but what his admin-
istration does has more of a longer-
lasting impact on your life.
The point here is that, despite its
less attractive appeal although this
Christie vs. Buono race certainly is at-
tractive as a New Jersey resident,
should be just as interested in this
election, and just as willing to vote, as
you are for the next president.
So go to the polls on Nov. 5 to cast
your vote.
In addition to the governors race,
you will have the chance, in many
towns and boroughs, to vote for school
board candidates and council/commit-
tee/mayoral candidates. When the
dust has settled, this could end up
being one of the more impactful elec-
tions on your daily life in recent mem-
ory.
Dont be lazy. Dont feel like Nov. 5,
2013, isnt as special as Nov. 6, 2012,
was or as special as Nov. 8, 2016, will
be. Thats simply not true for New Jer-
seyans.
And if youre really in the voting
spirit now, dont forget you can vote on
Oct. 16 in a special election for a U.S.
Senate seat between Democrat Cory
Booker and Steve Lonegan.
This is going to be fun. Are you
ready to participate?
Get up off your couch and vote
This election is more impactful for N.J. residents than presidential race
Your thoughts
Do you plan on voting in the Nov. 5
General Election? Why or why not? Do
you think it holds the same importance
as a presidential election? Let your
voice be heard through a letter to the
editor.
