What a lovely week we have had! It was like summer came back and gave us all a second shot. The Waiouru kids are straight back into their learning and have begun their exploration into what it means to be a scientist. This term we will have our very own Waiouru School Science Fair (Week Seven 20th - 21st June). Finalists from each category will be invited to take their science fair project to the Taihape Inter-School Science Fair in Week Nine. This is the perfect context for our students to embrace several of our community chosen school values, in particular 'Inquisitiveness' and 'Creativity'. In preparation for their science fair projects students are being encouraged to be innovative thinkers able to think outside the square, as well as thinking critically about their questions and findings. This context also works well with the 'Habits Of Mind' professional development the teachers attended in the term break. Piwakawaka (our New Entrant Class) is currently using the Habit of Mind - 'Gathering Data Through All Senses'. Their science inquiry is about creating a safe and healthy environment for school chickens. Piwakawaka embarked on a data-gathering mission to the Tweeddale Chicken Coop. While they were there (after a delicious morning tea of hot chicken nuggets - hopefully they didn't make a connection there ;-) the little scientists in Piwakawaka had to use their senses to observe what makes a safe, warm, comfortable home for happy chickens. From this data they will design and build their own chicken coop here at school. The kids did a fantastic job asking tricky questions about what chickens need. One question in particular was so good I just have to share it with you (this was passed on to me by their host, who was still giggling about it that afternoon).
Mr Five: "Excuse me, but how do you protect them from the bullets?" Our Confused Host: "Umm, what bullets?" Mr Five (imagine a furrowed brow): "The army bullets!!" Sooo funny, I love the way kids think, they always surprise me :-) Ka kite ano Marama
Waiouru School Ski Team Meeting We would like to put forward a ski team in term three. If you are interested in your child participating there will be a meeting tonight 16th May 5pm in the school staffroom. We will discuss expectations, costs, transport, gear etc. WANTED We are going to have a grocery raffle and we would like each child in the school to donate one nonperishable item each. Please hand into the school office. Your assistance is greatly appreciated. Doilies Miss Fogden is having a vintage theme for her wedding and she is having trouble finding crochet doilies. If you have any that you no longer want she would be more than happy to take them off your hands. Cereal Boxes Mrs Corbett is after clean empty cereal boxes for Piwakawaka to use for constuction. If you can help with either of these please drop off at the school office or to the classroom teachers.
