Swine flu update Human swine influenza (H1N1 Influenza) continues to be a serious threat in our community. To help avoid the spread of swine flu at school: Please ensure that your child remains at home if he or she has flu symptoms. Take your child to a doctor or hospital immediately if the symptoms worsen or call 000. Encourage your child to practice good hygiene: Cover your mouth when you cough Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water or use alcohol rubs to avoid cross infection Avoid close contact with people who are sick If your child has travelled to a recognised swine flu infection zone and has no flu symptoms and is well, your child is able to attend school. For the latest information on the swine flu please go to the NSW Health website at: www.emergency.health.nsw.gov.au/ swineflu/index.asp or call the Australian Government swine flu hotline on 1800 2007. With the finals in all major codes fast approaching I hope your team continues to be successful. Being a long suffering Geelong supporter, I am prepared for the unexpected! Have a great week

Relieving Principal ASSISTANT PRINCIPALS CORNER Welcome back, I hope all families thoroughly enjoyed the winter break and your children have returned to school feeling healthy, energised and ready for a fantastic term. In term3, our COGS unit is titled Working Together. This unit will focus on the value of team work, and the importance of co-operation, tolerance and compromise. The unit culminates with our stage 2 overnight camp. The dates for our camp are Thursday 10th September- Friday 11th September. Thank you to those parents who have already made the full payment. Our text focus for this term is Exposition writing. An exposition is a piece of writing that is written with the intention to persuade or convince the reader, eg: advertisements, letters of complaints, pamphlets, essays etc. Your child will be given some written homework activities in their fortnightly lifestyle grids which will focus on this text type. One of our mathematics focuses for term 3 is to further develop Mental Computation Strategies. All students will be encouraged to continue to learn their times table number facts. We ask for your support in assisting your child with this. Many parents comment about the advantage of using travel time spent in the car to revise these tables. My children had a copy of the times table number facts in the back pocket of the car, and used to quiz each other using their chart on the way to netball or soccer training! We will be focusing on digital art in our class technology sessions, and your child will be using windows Movie Maker during the term, while developing their photography skills. During the school holidays the stage 2 teachers worked tirelessly, designing innovative programs for this term, ensuring that all students are provided with challenging classroom opportunities. I hope you are proud of the achievements of your child during semester 1. Please feel free to make an appointment to discuss your childs learning at any time during the term. Heres to a fantastic start to a very busy term 3!

EARLY STAGE 1 EXCURSION TO THE REPTILE PARK Last Tuesday our Early Stage 1 classes were lucky enough to go on an excursion to the Reptile Park. It was a wonderful learning experience and the students were eagerly talking about the outing on their return to school. Yesterday, I enjoyed reading some of the childrens recounts that were very well written and colourfully illustrated. The teachers also had a great day and were very keen to download their photos. As you can see from this photo, it was a day filled with exciting events.

STAGE 3 CANBERRA CAMP It has been a busy start to Term 3 with Stage 3 going on camp to Canberra. What a trip! On Monday 3 rd August Wednesday 5th August, 125 students, 13 parents and 5 teachers headed off to a very chilly Canberra for 3 days of educational fun! We headed off at 8am and participated in a variety of educational programs focused on Australias history, cultural heritage and democracy. We visited: Parliament House Old Parliament House (Museum of Democracy) Australian War Memorial National Gallery of Australia National Capital Exhibition Centre Australian Institute of Sport Telstra Tower Mount Ainsley lookout Australian Electoral Education Centre a variety of Embassys on a bus tour and the very popular, Questacon The students were very well behaved and set a great example for Beaumont Hills Public School. They learned lots of information at all of the venues, participating in parliamentary role plays, mock voting elections, a solemn remembrance ceremony, and had lots of fun using their problem solving skills and inquisitive minds at Questacon. The students undoubtedly had a rewarding experience, both for their educational and social development. We are sure they slept soundly Wednesday night! The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit their National Capital as part of their civics and citizenship education. To assist your family financially, the Australia Government is contributing funding under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate (PACER) program toward the travel expenses incurred. This payment will be paid directly to the school upon the completion of our excursion and has been included in your payment towards the costing of the camp. We would like to thank the Australian Government for their support of this program. A big THANK YOU must go to our wonderful parents that took 3 days out of their busy schedules to help the Stage 3 teachers and students. We certainly could not have done it without you and we thank you for your support and assistance throughout the trip. A special mention must go to our fathers that were on camp with us and their amazing act during our Talent Quest. The camp was certainly was lots of fun!

Stage 2 Longneck Lagoon Enrichment DayRecount On Tuesday the 7th of July we went to Longneck lagoon to participate in a Science Program called Who Killed Kermit. First we found out what colour is best used as a bird band in the wild, so you can see the bird in its environment. Our teacher threw some coloured counters out in the bush and gave us 10 seconds to find them, pink turned out to be the most noticeable colour as a bird band. We learnt about making a hypothesis, this is a type of scientific guess on what will happen in an experiment. After the morning session we did the visual tests. This is where we had to score the lagoon water on what it looks like, the water was quite muddy. Then we tested the water on its turbidity (muddiness of the water), ph ( water chemistry), oxygen, ammonia ( animal waste) and temperature. Then we had lunch. Finally, we participated in a dip netting session. We had been waiting for this all day. Sahar caught a tadpole, we also caught a lot of different insects. Then we went back to a lab and looked at the insects under the amazing microscopes. This was definitely our favourite part, because you could see so many creatures up close. We were shocked to find out that humans are not looking after a frogs environment and many of them are dying. We all had an awesome day, and we would love to go back again.
