Lenape District holds
two-day emergency program
By SHANNON CAULFIELD
The Tabernacle Sun
Lenape Regional High School
District recently held a two-day
emergency planning course, de-
signed by FEMA and hosted by
the state police, to prepare the
schools to handle emergency situ-
ations.
Back in the fall after the
Sandy Hook Elementary School
shooting, of course we did what
we could to put everything in
place for school shootings, said
Carol Birnbohm, superintendent
of schools during the April 17
board of education meeting. We
didnt want to just train for a
school crisis with just a school
shooting in mind. We wanted to
look at everything in a school set-
ting.
Medford Township Emergency
Management Coordinator Lt. Jef-
frey Wagner of the township po-
lice department brought the pro-
gram to the attention of Birn-
bohm.
The training program is imple-
mented nationally and presented
by FEMA. Normally, the actual
training is hosted in Maryland,
but in this case, it was brought to
the district.
LRHSD Security and Emer-
gency Management Coordinator
James Kehoe, all eight sending
districts representatives, re-
source officers from Cherokee,
Shawnee, Lenape and Seneca,
fire, EMS, state police, buildings
and grounds and transportation
personnel were in attendance, ac-
cording to Birnbohm. Additional-
ly, police from Evesham and Med-
ford townships attended the train-
ing.
"We immediately made sure we
had procedures in place to ad-
dress incidents similar to last
fall's events, but we also put some
distance between those incidents

and took a look at the big picture
in emergency planning and re-
sponse," Kehoe said in a state-
ment from LRHSD.
This was a rare chance for all
attendees from different agencies
who respond to school emergen-
cies to sit down and discuss pro-
cedures and strategies to handle a
wide range of hazards and
threats that may affect our
schools.
According to Birnbohm,
LRHSD utilizes many of the prac-
tices already in place.
The core of the program is to
establish a standardized method
for schools to develop customized
emergency operations plans that
adhere to a national standard, ac-
cording to Sgt. William Craney of
the State Police Emergency Man-
agement Section South Region in
the release.
LRHSD already has a compre-
hensive plan in place, and by
training with key emergency re-
sponders, they are well on their
way to improving their response
to all school hazards. A lot of the
best practices are already in use

Students read novel
in the current Lenape Regional
High School District Crisis Plan,
Craney said.
This was a great opportunity
to strengthen the already excel-
lent relationships built over years
among the schools and public
safety agencies while sharing
new ideas to continually improve
our crisis response plans, said
Wagner in the release.
In other news:
Seneca High School senior
Abby Saiia presented Highlights
from the Students Perspective, a
series where the board brings in
students to present from the four
schools.
Saiia chronicled the students
activities outside academics in-
cluding No Place For Hate, which
students would learn how to be
an upstander, spread kindness,
signed a contract and mix it up
day, where students would sit
with peers they may not have
known.
Seneca students also held a
homecoming parade during half-
time of the game, a powederpuff
game where the junior girls took
on the senior girls in football, a
character breakfast, Hugs for
Brady charity dinner, the Spirit
Carnival and A Walk Under the
Stars, as part of the One Book,
One School program.
Students and faculty read A
Fault in Our Stars by John
Green, about two teenagers deal-
ing with childhood cancer.
A Walk Under the Stars was
organized based on the American
Cancer Societys Relay for Life.
It was a really great way to
bring the book to life, Saiia said.

hat can be said about the
Boston Marathon tragedy
that hasnt been said al-
ready? Its another senseless act of
anonymous violence.
Add the Boston Marathon to the list
with Newtown, Conn.; Columbine,
Colo.; Atlanta, Ga.; Waco, Texas; Okla-
homa City, Okla.; New York, N.Y.; and
countless others.
The person, or people, who commit-
ted this act is a terrorist make no
mistake about that. As of press time
(April 19), one person believed to be a
suspect was shot dead by authorities in
Boston, while another was still on the
loose. These people prayed on innocent
lives in a vulnerable situation.
Three victims were killed, including
an 8-year-old boy, and almost 200 others
were wounded by two bombs that were
placed in bags near the Marathons fin-
ish line.
The victims of the tragedy stretch
far beyond the city of Boston, the state
of Massachusetts, and the region of
New England. Runners travel from
near and far to participate in the
worlds oldest annual marathon, which
began in 1897, and family and friends
travel with them to watch them finish.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to
everyone affected.
When will these acts of mass vio-
lence end? Its scary to think the more
appropriate word to use is if and not
when.
But we need to continue living our
lives. We cant live in fear, as difficult
as that may be. We cant stop attending
our sons and daughters Little League
games, our parents marathon runs,
our favorite professional or college
sports teams big games, our favorite
bands concerts just because violence
may happen where large groups of
people congregate.
It may happen thats an unfortu-
nate reality of our lives. We can height-
en and increase security (which we
should do), but we ultimately cant pre-
vent every act of terror.
Thats a sad reality.
What we can do is continue to live
our lives like normal, remembering
the victims and helping their families
along the way. This is what the terror-
ist doesnt want, and this what we
should give him, her or them.

Tabernacle schools discuss technology
By SHANNON CAULFIELD
The Tabernacle Sun
The Tabernacle Board of Education ap-
proved a three-year technology plan for the
district during April 15 meeting.
According to Superintendent of Schools
George Rafferty, it is an optional plan for
federal E-rates and a discount on technolo-
gy, including telecommunication, media
and Internet.
We realized we would see substantial
savings from this program, Rafferty said.
The school district will likely realize be-
tween 40-50 percent discounts for the serv-
ices. The district will be leasing Dell com-
puters, which will be renewed in three
years. Additionally, the Wi-Fi was upgrad-
ed between the schools.
We increased our bandwidth. We can
throw every student in the school on a de-
vice and our Wi-Fi can handle it, Rafferty
said.
Eighty iPads were also provided and will
be overseen by the special education teach-
ers. Each school will have two carts with 40
iPads for each classroom to use as needed,
according to Rafferty.
The School Improvement Panel will be
put in place through state legislation as
part of the new teacher evaluation tool be-
ginning next year.
Each school must have one. [The panel]
must include the principals, another ad-
ministrator and equal teacher representa-
tion, Rafferty said.
The board is working with the teachers
association to be part of the panel.
The program will be used for new
teacher mentoring, to monitor the teacher
evaluation system, how to approach teach-
ers who are below proficiency and how
reach a professional improvement plan, ac-
cording to Rafferty.
The panel is slated to be in place by the
end of this year.
In other news:
The district will be eliminating numer-
ous special education assistant positions
as a result of a decline in enrollment in
students with IEPs on top of substantial
declining enrollment.
The district has a current enrollment of
808 students 429 at Tabernacle Elemen-
tary School and 379 at Kenneth R. Olson

Well see how that goes, a lot
of us are excited, Saiia.
Senecas cross country team
will be honored by the state board
of education for good sportsman-
ship on May 15.
According to Birnbohm, the
team came in first at the Cross
Country Shootout at Gloucester
County College.
The team placed first after a
Mt. St. Dominic runner, slated to
win first place, collapsed several
feet from the finish line. As a re-
sult, Mt. St. Dominic didnt place,
and Seneca ended up with the
title.
At the awards ceremony,
Seneca knew the way in which
they won the trophy and didnt
feel right, Birnbohm said.
They turned over their trophy
at the awards ceremony.
That was a pretty special
thing to happen.

At Seneca we say were family,
and in my time here, weve be-
come so close.
With an actual family mem-
ber in the show, it completes the
image, Abby said.
With the opening show date
closing in, the girls are anticipat-

According to Emma, the show
is more soulful and jazzier, and
the audience shouldnt expect the
traditional version of the musi-
cal.
Theres a lot of energy in this
show, which is great, Betts said.
The faculty members children
are involved in the production,
ranging in ages from 4 to 11, cast
as the munchkins.
They really enjoy being on the
stage, Betts said. Theyre outgo-
ing and excited. They practice at
home with their parents as well.
The Wiz opens May 2 at 7
p.m.
Its really starting to come to-
gether with the acting, singing
and dancing, Betts said. Were
