BY THOMAS J. MCKILLEN
MANAGING EDITOR
Eight Menomonee Falls High
School students participated in the
Summer Healthcare Academy pro-
gram offered by Community Memorial
Hospital over a three week period this
summer, and seven of them spoke
about their experience during a pres-
entation at the Menomonee Falls
School Board Sept. 22.
Under the Summer Healthcare
Academy, students spent three weeks
rotating through 16 hospital depart-
ments. Students then created posters
and made presentations at a recogni-
tion ceremony. The students displayed
the posters during the School Board
meeting.
Students who participated in the
summer academy were Ashley
Doherty, Sarah Rynning,
Madeline Perinovic, Aprajita Singh,
Claire Rhode, Jessica Kaiser, Heloise
Cheruvalath and Gabby Pipia.
Jennifer Tarcin, the school district
coordinator for the academy, noted
that the Menomonee Falls was the
most highly attended of the gradua-
tion ceremonies that the hospital has
had. Part of that is due to the impres-
sion these young women made on the
staff.
Tarcin explained that Menomonee
Falls has participated in the summer
academy with the hospital for eight
years, during which time 70
Menomonee Falls High School stu-
dents have participated in the pro-
gram. For this year, Tarcin said that 22
Menomonee Falls students applied for
the eight openings in the summer
academy. Perfect attendance is
required for the academy and prior
research is also required.
The students then summarized
their experiences in the program.

VILLAGE OF GERMANTOWN
For your convenience the Village Public Works Department is
scheduling a Fall brush pick-up starting the second Monday in October
(October 13, 2014). Although this process will take approximately 2
weeks to complete, we will not be extending the pick-up, or picking up
brush that is put out after Sunday, October 12, 2014.
Limbs shall be no more than 6 foot in length and placed at the curb with
the trunk facing the street for easier handling. Please tie branches 2 or
smaller into bundles no larger than 2 feet in diameter using twine or light
rope. Your cooperation with this will greatly increase the efficiency at
which we can pick up the brush. Brush in containers WILL NOT be
picked up as too often there is yardwaste in the bottom of the
container. Yardwaste and leaves are not included in
the pick-up. We encourage you to take your
yardwaste to the Recycling Center.
Please be aware that raking leaves into the
street area is against Village Ordinance and
the Village of Germantown WILL NOT pick
up such leaves. Again, we encourage you to
take your leaves to the Recycling Center.

Mathnasiums TriMathlon provides
a wonderful opportunity for kids to
engage in math in a fun way that also
gives back to the community, said
Kevin Carnes, President of Lakeshores
Education Division. Were proud to
support this event and inspire more kids
to develop a love for math.
The TriMathlon consists of three
events:
Magic Squares, where students
are awarded points for developing their
own math problems.
The Counting Game, which tests
students ability to count from any num-
ber, to any number, by any number.
Mental Math Workout, which asks
students to solve problems without a
pencil and paper in order to show off
their number sense.
Students do not need to be enrolled
in a Mathnasium center to participate.
Prep materials, including a practice test,

NOTICE TO MENOMONEE FALLS WATER CUSTOMERS
FLUSHING OF WATER MAINS
The Menomonee Falls Water Utility will be cleaning and flushing water mains from
7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. beginning September 29th and continuing through October
17th. The flushing will remove most of the natural minerals that have settled in the
mains such as iron, a harmless-reddish brown mineral that discolors the water.
If you observe the Water Utility personnel working in your area, refrain from using
water or use as little as possible for one-half to three-quarters of an hour to insure
that the water has settled in the mains. This will also help prevent any iron from
being drawn into your water piping system.
If you do find that your water has become discolored, refrain from using it for an
additional one-half to three-quarters of an hour. Then draw off the remaining dis-
colored water through the COLD WATER FAUCET ONLY.
Your cooperation during this flushing procedure will benefit all water customers.

A Joint Review Board gave final
approval for a 12th Tax Incremental
Finance (TIF) district in Menomonee Falls
Sept. 23.
The district covers approximately 107.5
acres of land on the east and west sides of
Lilly Road. The area includes the site of a
former concrete block company and a one-
time school that was later used by a busi-
ness.
The TIF plan was previously reviewed
and supported by the Menomonee Falls
Plan Commission and later the Village
Board. Under state TIF law, final approval
for a TIF is given by a joint review board
comprised of all the local taxing entities
(municipal, school district, technical school
district, and county) and a citizen represen-
tative.
In a TIF, taxes for given properties nor-
mally directed toward local units of govern-
ment are instead used to pay for infrastruc-
ture improvements. The local units of gov-
ernment will later benefit from the increased
value generated by the improvements.
The Joint Review Board meeting lasted
approximately 10 minutes. William Taibl, a
consultant on TIF matters for the village,
noted that the project plan was adjusted to
detail improvements for Lilly Road that
would occur as the area is developed. The
Joint Review Board then unanimously
approved the request.

Menomonee Falls boy Dakota Spilger
turned 14 on Jan. 11 and three days later
he was diagnosed with cancer.
However, the good-natured teen took it
in stride, joking to people who asked what
he got for his birthday, Cancer. I would
like to exchange it for a better gift, please.
Diagnosed with a very rare bone mar-
row cancer called Myelodysplastic syn-
drome (MDS), Dakota has undergone
many forms of treatment, including
chemotherapy, radiation and an umbilical
blood transplant from which he is currently
suffering complications.
Mother Melissa Blawat said that ever
since receiving the devastating news, she
and her family have been forced to take
things day by day.
Cancer teaches you that you just go
along for the ride, she said. The only way
to do it is with a sense of humor.
The familyMelissa, father Todd
Spilger, Blawats fiance Richard Hinkley,
sister Heather Spilger and stepsister Brooke
Hinkleyare hoping to make the journey a
bit smoother for Dakota as they host a
fundraiser at The Sterling Chalet, 1271
Wisconsin 175 in Hubertus, on Sunday,
Oct. 5 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The family-friendly event will include
bands, a car and motorcycle show, a raffle
and a bake sale. Admission is $10 for
adults, free for kids 10 and under.
Attendees will also receive a T-shirt.
The funds raised will go toward com-
pensating lost wagesIts impossible to
work, go to school and care for a child with
cancer, Melissa saidand to help pay for
the land that is needed to bring to comple-
tion Dakotas Make- A-Wish Foundation
request of a fishing shack.
He wants a place to hang out and go
fishing, Melissa explained. He has want-
ed this forever.
He certainly deserves it, she said, as it
has not been an easy road ever since
Melissa, an LPN, started observing things
amiss with her son last fall.
Dakota started losing weight and there
was bruising on his hands, she said. I was
seeing all kinds of signs.
Melissa took him in for bloodwork, but
the doctor didnt call back until weeks later,
stating he had misfiled the lab work. At that
point, Dakota was sent straight to the emer-
gency room.
When they led us in past everybody, I
just knew we were in trouble, Melissa
recalled. Then it was like, Welcome to a
whole new world. Welcome to cancer.
This when the trek through treatment
began and Dakotawho was already living
with challenges being on the autism spec-
trumhad to start trudging through a whole
new, unpleasant normal of hospitalizations,
extreme physical weakness and major set-
backs, including going to the ICU for pneu-
monia on Easter.
Its just been a mess, said Melissa.
Its pretty un-awesome, pretty not fair.
It has been the bright light of Dakotas
personality that has guided the way,
Melissa said.
Dakota has led the path for us with
ample amounts of positivity, she said. He
has had such a great attitude this entire
time.
Now stable and at home for the longest
stretch since January, Dakota is currently
attending half days as a freshman at
Menomonee Falls High School.
He was just allowed to go back, his
mother said. But he has to use the elevator
because walking is exhausting for him.
There is no remission for MDS so its a
wait-and-see of milestones, said Melissa.
We have to get to three months, six
months, a year, and make something up so
he can ring a bell, she said.
Right now Dakota can not be declared
cancer-free due to masses that may be lym-
phoma that have been found in his left lung,
but the family is hopeful as they look for-
ward to the fundraiser which will double as
a celebration of Dakotas strong spirit.
I just want it to be so fun for Dakota,
Melissa said. I want him to see how many
people love him and care about him.
She went on to note that friends and
family, namely my niece Brittany and my
very best friend Nikki, have been extraor-
dinarily supportive through this rough year.
Weve needed a lot of help and weve
received it, Melissa said. Someone was
with me every day I was at Childrens
Hospital. People have been so wonderful.
The family is seeking donated items for
the raffle portion of the event. To make a
donation, call Melissa at (414) 333-6227
or Brittany at (262) 391-8157.

Working Smoke Alarms Save Lives the theme of Fire Prevention Week
By Nikki Ackerman
Staff Writer
With a theme of Working Smoke
Alarms Save Lives: Test Yours Every
Month, Fire Prevention Week runs Oct. 5-
11; however, the push for fire safety goes
well beyond a mere seven days each calendar
year, officials say.
We want citizens to realize that this is
not just about a special week, it is all the
timewe want to raise awareness every day
of the week all year long, said Menomonee
Falls Assistant Fire Chief Jim Mollet. We
strive to make fire safety a daily message.
But for this particular weekestablished
by the National Fire Protection Association
(NFPA) in 1922 to commemorate the Great
Chicago Fire which began Oct. 8, 1871fire
safety becomes the hot topic.
During that period we try to visit every
educational institution in the village and
focus on proper exit routines and teach
things like what to do if your clothes catch
fire, said Mollet. Today more than ever
before, with new products out there and
more electronics in the home, the dangers are
there.
The danger in 1871, legend has it, was
Catherine O'Learys cow which kicked over
a lamp and set the family barn, and eventual-
ly the whole city of Chicago, on fire.
According to the NFPAwebsite, the incident
killed more than 250 people, left 100,000
homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 struc-
tures and burned more than 2,000 acres.
As if this wasnt bad enough, the
Peshtigo Firewhich occurred the exact same
dayleft far more wreckage in its wake. The
most devastating forest fire in American his-
tory, the northeast Wisconsin blaze killed
1,152 people, burned down 16 towns and
destroyed 1.2 million acres.
It is precisely these horrific numbers that
make fire safety an essential lifestyle.
What this week is designed to do is
remind everyone that even a little fire can get
out of control and cause tremendous dam-
age, said Germantown Fire Chief Gary
Weiss. We start the message in the grade
schools because it is so crucial to get into the
habit of fire safety at a young age and keep it
as a habit for the rest of your life.
Although tragic, these two great blazes
brought about the huge positive of fire safe-
ty as a mainstream message.
On the 40th anniversary of the Great
Chicago Fire, the Fire Marshals Association
of North America (now known as the
International Fire Marshals Association)
decided to start observing the tragedy in a
way that drives home the importance of fire
prevention, and according to the National
Archives and Records Administration's

Library Information Center, Fire Prevention Week is the
longest running public health and safety observance on
record. The week is observed on the Sunday through
Saturday period in which Oct. 9 falls and each year has a spe-
cific area of focus.
This year we are really emphasizing the importance of
having working smoke detectors and carbon monoxide
detectors in the houseone of every floor of the home and
one in every bedroom, said John Delain, public education
coordinator for the Germantown Fire Department.
Delain went on to offer a few useful tips: change the bat-
teries every Daylight Savings time; clean the detectors with
a vacuum or canned air once per month; and test them regu-
larly.
Its very important to make sure the detectors are work-
ing at all times, he said.
In conjunction with the Safe Kids Coalition of Southeast
Wisconsin and Dominos Pizza, the department is running a
program called Delivering Fire Safety.
On Oct. 23, several pre-registered participants (registra-
tion forms will be available at the Safety Fair as well as on
Dominos boxes) will receive a surprise visit from village
firefighters. Those who have working smoke and carbon
monoxide detectors will receive a free large, one-topping
pizza and those who do not will receive a working smoke
detector.
We will go and check their house and teach them about
fire and carbon monoxide safety while we are there, said
Delain. Its just another way to get the word out to the com-
munity.
Area events include:
Germantown Fire Safety FairSaturday, Oct. 4, 10:30
a.m. to 3:30 p.m., at Fire Station #2, N115 W18752 Edison
Drive. The event will include a variety of childrens and fam-
ily activities, including a Sparky Bounce House, a visit by
Flight for Life, a display of fire trucks and the Survive Alive
House. Food and beverages will be available for purchase.
West Bend Open HouseSaturday, Oct. 11, 10 a.m. to 1
p.m., at Station #1, 325 N. 8th Avenue (located at the corner
of 7th Avenue and Washington Street). The open house will
give the public an opportunity to meet their local firefighters,
experience the Fire Safety House, tour the station and com-
plete a fire safety quiz for a chance to win breakfast with the
firefighters. T-shirts and refreshments will be available for
purchase to raise money for Chix for a Cause for breast can-
cer awareness.

Not everyone has to worry about pipes
freezing in the winter, but much of America
does. If the temperature in your area routine-
ly drops to 20 degrees or below, it will be
worth your time and energy to prepare and
maintain your home to prevent your pipes
from bursting. Pipes burst when an ice block-
age forms and the pressure builds up behind
it. While you wont have ice shooting into
your home, youll have all of the water that
has built up behind it in the basement, in the
crawlspace or through the walls of your
house.
Proper insulation is the first step to pre-
ventative maintenance. The unheated areas
of your house are the most important to insu-
late. Attics, basements and crawlspaces are
the general culprits. Polyethylene or fiber-
glass tubes are available to keep the cold
out of pipes. Youll want to measure the
diameter of the pipes and purchase the cor-
rect size. This will ensure you have to make
only one trip to your home supply store.
Pipe insulation is carried in most big box
stores and in all hardware and home supply
stores. It can be cheaper in the spring month
as prices tend to go up as the temperatures
drop and demand goes up. You will want to
be particularly aware of any pipes that have
been stressed by previous freezing or have
recently been installed.
If you experience significant periods of
severe winter weather, you might consider
wrapping pipes in heat tape before insulat-
ing them. The instructions for installation are
very specific, and it is essential to follow
them. If you dont, the heat tape can lead to
fires. Heat tape also has to be checked reg-
ularly to ensure it is still functioning effective-
ly.
Once youve taken all of the prerequisite
steps, youll still have some maintenance to
do to ensure you dont wake up in a puddle.
When the temperature is expected to drop,
turn on your faucets, particularly those that
flow along outside walls and are the most
exposed to the cold. This will reduce the
pressure and can prevent an explosion in the
pipes, even if an ice dam does form.
Opening cabinets that contain pipes will let
the warm air from the rest of your house flow
onto the pipes, keeping them warmer.
You can take one more step and check
the basement and garage for any leaks.
Look particularly for places where cold air
could be directly applied to pipes from
cracked windows, gaps or areas where the
insulation has worn away. Applying your
general insulation strategies will save money
on your energy bill, and it can also keep
your pipes warmer and delay or prevent a
freeze.
Preventative maintenance is never an
attractive fix. Its neither a new skylight nor a
fresh coat of paint, and it wont be instantly
noticeable. Pipe insulation and maintenance,
however, will add to the value of your home
in the long run by preventing costly damage
and a nasty surprise in the middle of the
night.

Doherty said she has been interested in
becoming a doctor since the seventh grade.
She said the Healthcare Academy changed
her perspective on her future profession.
In all honesty, I didnt really realize
how many careers there are in healthcare
or what these different departments do,
Doherty said.
She said the program was fantastic
and cited the work in the Cancer Care
Center left an impression on her.
I learned a lot about myself during my
rotations at CMH. I always knew that I
wanted to be a doctor, I finally understand
why, and thats because I want to help peo-
ple, Doherty said.
Rynning said she entered the program
with plans on being a pharmacist.
However, after the career rotations she is
now interested in nursing and oncology as
well as pharmacy.
One of the highlights was the outpatient
care center, she she helped dress a wound.
In pharmacy, Rynning saw the different
types of jobs in that area.
Perinovic came into the program with
no idea what I wanted to be. I know I just
wanted something in the health care field.
She said one highlight was spending
time in the speech therapy area. In the lab-
oratory area, the students learned of their
own blood types.
Perinovic also recalled a moment in the
emergency room where 20 hospital
employees responded to an patient in
need.
Seeing that helped me realize I want
to go into nursing, Perinovic said.
Singh said that prior to the academy
she was interested in a career in neurology.
I got to see some amazing rotations
such as physical therapy and nursing,
Singh said.
She said she intends to pursue a career
in healthcare.
Rhode came into the program really
open minded and said the program
opened her eyes to the many careers in
healthcare. Rhode said she learned as
much as surgery was really cool and I give
those people so much credit, all those nurs-
es and surgeons, I learned all the noise and
sounds I saw that I think thats not some-
thing I would want to go into.
Rhode said the program was a blast
off into the unknown because theres so
many different paths I can take.
Kaiser said she had no idea what to
expect when she heard about the pro-
gram. She said hospital mentors explained
their jobs and took the time to explain why
they like their jobs.
She learned that surgical services was
one of my favorites while the speech ther-
apy department was the most interactive.
Kaiser played a picture game in which she
would describe what was in a picture and
the patient would have to figure out which
picture she was talking about and say what
was in the picture.
It was so nice to feel like I was helping
and he thanked us for being there, Kaiser
said.
She said she is interested in learning
more about radiology and therapy.
Cheruvalath said the academy
changed my perspective on life and medi-
cine in general. I dont where else you can
do and see an actual surgery.
Cheruvalath witnessed a knee replace-
ment during one rotation.
I learned that I do want to be a med-
ical professional, for sure. Because theres
no other field where you can help people in
as direct a way as saving their life in medi-
cine, and thats something thats beautiful to
me, Cheruvalath said.
Tarcin said the students put all that
they have into this, and as you can see, they
go quite a bit out of it.
