Dotty squares investigation Aim: To investigate the relationship of the perimeter, area and number of dots inside building

up squares. Introduction: I am going to investigate changes in the perimeter, area and dots inside the square of different size squared made up of single 1 by 1 squares. For these I am going to use 3 different data tables and work out the patterns of each to create a formula for each. Example:

The horizontal sides of the square give a measurement of width The vertical sides of the square dive a measurement of length The horizontal and vertical lines that cross inside the square is called a dot. Length+length+width+width = perimeter. Length*width = Area Squares: 1.

Extension: Aim: To investigate the pattern of the increase of area, perimeter and dots in the inside of a shape built up of squares Introduction: I am going to investigate how the area, perimeter and number of dots increase as squares are added. The shape I will start of will be an L shape of 2 squares. Shapes sent to you in excel.

I did not manage to work out the equation for area and dots by myself, but I found out that my equation was a parabola. Sorry it was too hard. Area equation http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=1%2F2+%28n%2B7+n%5E2%29&lk=1&a=ClashPrefs_*Math-
