FORMULAS FOR AREA AND
PERIMETER OF GEOMETRIC FIGURES
• Perimeter and area are fundamental formulas in mathematics.
They are used to quantify physical space. Basic knowledge of
perimeter and area can be applied practically on a daily basis
because it is needed by people in general.
• With understanding on how much space you have and learn how to
fit shapes together will surely help you remodel a workspace, or
even assemble a computer system.
Perimeter

• Perimeter of a two-dimensional shape refers to the distance around

the shape.
• Think of wrapping tightly a string around a rectangular board. The
length of the string would be the perimeter of the rectangular
board. To make it easier to remember, think “peRIMeter” which has
the word RIM in it which denotes the edge of an object. The word
perimeter is made up of two Greek words – “peri” which means
around and “metron” which means measure.
Perimeter

• To get the perimeter of any figure or polygon, just add up all the
lengths of the sides. Make sure that the lengths are measured in
the same units.
• Examples of the units of measures are inches, centimeters, meters
or feet.
Examples:

Problem 1: (Rectangle)
• A rectangle has a length of 10centimeters and a width of 4
centimeters. Find the perimeter.
Examples:

P = 4 + 4 + 10 + 10 (Rectangle has opposite sides with the same

lengths, 4cm and 10cm. Add all the lengths of all the four sides to
get the perimeter.)

P = 28 cm (Answer)
Examples:

Note:
The formula for the perimeter of a rectangle is written as P = 2l +2w,
where l is the length and w is the width of the rectangle.
Examples:

Problem 2: (Square) Each side of a square is 5cm.

Find its perimeter. Side = 5 cm P = 5 + 5 + 5 + 5

Or
P=4x5
P = 20 cm.
Examples:

Note:
The formula for the perimeter of a square is written as P = 4s, where
s is the length of the sides of the square.
Examples:

Problem 3: (Triangle) Find the perimeter of a triangle having sides 4

m, 9 m and 7 m.
Perimeter of the triangle is the sum of all the three sides.
P=4+9+7
P = 20 m
Examples:

The formula for the perimeter of a triangle is

written as P = a + b + c, where a, b and c are the
length of the sides of the triangle.
Examples:

The perimeter of the circle is referred as the

circumference It is the arc length of the circle, as if
it were opened up and straightened out to a line
segment. When you draw a segment passing through
the center of the circle, that is called diameter. While
the radius is one-half of the measure of the diameter.
Examples:
To get the circumference, we use the formula:
C = 2π r or C = π d
Where:
C – circumference
d – diameter
r – radius
π = 3.14
Examples:
Problem 4: (Circle)
If radius of the circle is 9cm then find its circumference.
Given: Radius = 9cm
Circumference = 2πr
= 2 x 3.14 x 9

C = 56.52 cm
Area
• Geometrically, area is defined as the space occupied by a
flat shape or the surface of the object. It is the number of
unit squares that cover the surface of a closed figure.
Simply, area is the whole of the inside. It is measured in
square units such as square centimeter, square meter,
square inches, square feet, etc.

• When finding the area of a polygon, you count how many

squares of a certain size will cover the region inside the
polygon.
Area
• Example:

• You count all the squares, so the area is 16 square units. But this
is not applicable for bigger or smaller units.
Area
• To compute for the area, it is easier to use a formula. Here are
formulae for common polygons.
Area
Example:
A rectangle has a length of 18 centimeters and a width of 13
centimeters. Find the area.
Using the formula: A = lw
By substitution: A = 18cm x 13cm

Answer: A = 234cm2

(It would take 234 squares, each measuring 1 cm on a side, to cover this rectangle.)
Area
Example: (Circle)
A circle has only a diameter (distance across) and half the diameter
is the radius. It has no clearly visible length and width.
If a circle with a radius of 7 meters. What is its area?
Using the formula: A = π r2
By substitution: A = 3.14 x (7m)2
= 3.14 x 7m x 7m
Answer: A = 153.86m2
Area
Example: (Triangle)
Find the area of a triangle with a base of 15 inches and a height of
4 inches.
Solution:
Using the formula: A = ½bh
By substitution: A = ½(15in) (4in)
= ½ (60in2)
Answer: A = 30in2
