Hi there! I hope you'll follow me on GR for updates and on Instagram and Twitter, where I post about my books, my process, and random musings. Hope to see you there!

I was born in Sweden to Indian and Swedish parents and have lived in lots of places, including New York, Paris, and a tiny town in central Italy. I attended Yale College and New York University, where I earned a Ph.D. in British literature. In ENCHANTEÉ, magic is worked by using sorrow to transform things, which speaks both to the situation of the poor and the sweeping social changes occurring at the time of the French Revolution.(less)

I actually lived there for five months after I graduated from college, when I had zero idea what I wanted to do with my life. Some friends were going and I tagged along at the last minute, knowing at least I'd have a place to stay. I found a job teaching English to business people, which was weirdly fun, and spent the rest of my days exploring. Paris certainly inspired me; the city is an important character in my book.(less)

I absolutely devoured this book—I've been wanting to read a YA fantasy like this for so long! So many twists and turns, so much longing and pain. I loved it.

The two main characters are fierce and ruthless, wounded and deeply sympathetic. And the enem

“Magicians needed sorrow. And deep sorrow existed only because of love.”
Gita Trelease, Enchantée

“This was the Paris of the strivers, of those who dwelt low, not high. This was not the Paris of balloonists. It was her Paris, and it was the same as it had been this morning. But she, perhaps, was not.”
Gita Trelease, Enchantée

“Remember – magic is a cheater’s game, and everyone who sees it wants to play.”
Gita Trelease, Enchantée
