The Disability and Startup Project represents one of several dedicated efforts by AIFO with the specific objective of promoting disability inclusion and reducing stigma and marginalisation against the community of persons with disabilities in Liberia. In line with AIFO-Liberia Country Strategy, the project sought to erase negative stereotypes while continuing to respect human rights and inclusion of people with disabilities.

As part of the evaluation of the project activities, a ‘Lessons Learned’ engagement exercise was carried out in July 2021. The event was designed to gather best practices, lessons learned and recommendations that arose from the project, in particular the Communication component in an effort to strengthen the knowledge base for future disability awareness and inclusion programs.

The right to employment for people with disabilities (PWDs) is enshrined in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. This Convention works to promote and protect the human rights of PWDs and explicitly recognizes their right to work on an equal basis with others. Since Cambodia’s adoption of a specific law protecting the rights of PWDs in 2009, the country has undergone a significant transition, reaching lower-middle-income status in 2015 and aspiring to attain upper-middle-income status and high-income by 2030 and 2050 respectively. However, the implementation of legislation and national policies for the inclusion of PWDs within such economic goals is unclear, prompting concerns about the employment of PWDs. Since PWDs are affected directly by the implementation of these laws, they are best placed to provide accurate information on their effectiveness. To bridge this gap between policy and lived experience, this paper will examine the views of PWDs on the implementation of key laws as well as the employment challenges that remain for Cambodian PWDs.

Attitudes towards persons with disability are frequently subject of studies, however there are few studies about the academic performance of persons with disability in a normal school, wherein they are a subject of bullying and social exclusion by their non-disabled peers.  This case study's primary goal is to explore the lived experiences of a PWD high school honor student, studying in anon-SPED school. PWDs include those who have long-term physical, mental, intellectual or sensory impairments, which in interaction with various barriers that might be a hindrance in their participation with society and equal basis with others. One student was interviewed using Zoom meetings. Unstructured questionnaires were used as a major tool in gathering information and data, supported with an audio recorder. Gathered data and information were thematically organized to present the findings of the paper. Findings  showed that social exclusion and physical limitations the participant experiences affects her quality of life and education, but eventually the support and acceptance the participant receives from her family and friends affects her ability to cope with difficult situations. The student in the situation hopes for her success in studying, to prove to people and herself that she can be successful despite her disability.

At a time when the country commits itself to the Agenda 2030 and attain the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), such records of violence, disturbances and exclusions have every potential to overpower these commitments. Amartya Sen once said, ‘there can’t be famine in a democracy.’ If caste and gender continue to be factors that pre-determine children’s futures, we cannot the achieve SDGs in India.

Hunger and destitution is at the heart of the nation and we are looking forward to SDG as one of the tools to reduce poverty. Can the SDGs be achieved considering the multi-faceted dimensions of disparity and poverty that still exist in India right now?

In this study we try to bring to the fore a report of selected groups which are excluded from society and discuss the situation of children in India, to prepare for our common framework of action to end inequalities and exclusions. The framework would give us some directions as to how to ensure that the socially excluded communities, especially the Dalits, Adivasis and other minorities are not left behind and excluded from the new development plans and strategies which has been the case in the past. We also focus on the situation for children across all excluded groups and in general context.

The adoption of an Integrated Library Systems (ILS) helps library staff to automate libraries' routine operations. While some libraries are coping well with automation, others face challenges and setbacks. The purpose of the study is to explore the adoption of an ILS, Koha, at Kyambogo University Library Service (KyULS). The study employs a qualitative approach where data is gathered using semi-structured interviews followed by a survey. This paper reports initial results from the semi-structured interviews. Collected data was analysed using content analysis. The study aims to provide recommendations to alleviate or resolve the difficulties that are hampering KyULS specifically and potentially other libraries when adopting an ILS. This study is of value to academic librarians, LIS schools and ILS vendors globally as it helps them better understand the unique challenges faced by libraries in sub-Saharan Africa.

Individuals' attitudes about persons with disability (PwD) strongly affect differentlyabled persons' quality of life and position in society. Some research offers support for the ability of systematic, supported, longitudinal contact between different groups of individuals to improve attitudes. College campuses, in particular, offer a potentially useful arena in which to facilitate this type of contact. This study explored contextual factors (eg, geographic region, biological sex) and predictors of disability-related attitudes among a college student population to determine strategies for course-based intervention design (eg, as community-engaged or service-learning initiatives). Surveying participants from universities in two regions of the United States, we found that self-esteem, audience-based communication apprehension, and contact with PwD explain more than 50% of the variance in disability-related attitudes. Further, we found that geographic location affects both self-esteem and audience-based communication apprehension (communicating/interacting with PwD). We discuss the implications for community engagement and/or service learning and highlight the importance of partnerships among relevant community stakeholders, including university faculty, students, and staff.

Films are audiovisual in nature. Both film’s sounds as well as visuals are source of information required to understand the film narrative. When persons with hearing impairment view film content, they cannot access the sound of the film. Hence it is possible that persons with hearing disabilities may not be able to understand the film narrative at par with the people who don’t have any such disability.
This experimental research study is aimed at finding the difference between the understanding of the narrative of AV clip when it is watched with sound and without sound. As a pre-test a trailer of the film without any sound was shown to people without audiovisual disabilities. And then the same trailer will be shown with sound to the same sample audience. Responses about viewers understanding of the narrative of the trailer will be collected in the form of questionnaire.
This research study is a small part of more extensive research aimed at finding how persons with disabilities understand the film narrative and what methods can be used to improve accessibility of audiovisual media so that PWDs understand film narrative at par with persons without disabilities.

Sidewalks are links to important buildings thus will give impact on the quality of accessibility for all types of users. The aim of this study is to come out with design recommendation regarding sidewalk for wheelchair user and blind people in campus. This paper discusses the study done on a sidewalk along the road in IIUM Gombak campus. IIUM Gombak was designed as accessible campus provided with sidewalk around the main road. The sidewalk is used by all students including students with disabilities. The literature review studied the type of people with disabilities, safety guideline, and universal design as solution. The methodology is based on access audit. The data gained were analysed using access audit checklist, observations, photography and interviews with the student. The access audits were carried out along the sidewalk mentioned in relation to accessible. The sidewalk was divided into four main zones to focus and details. The findings should improve to the sidewalk to make it more accessible to the Student with Disabilities. This will increase the safety and accessibility for wheelchair users and blind people using the sidewalk. As a conclusion, consideration of sidewalk design will improve the level of accessibility for students with disabilities in IIUM Gombak campus.

The Asian and Pacific Decade for PWDs (1993−2002) was adopted in 1992 by the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP). Afterward, the Issues of disability and development, disability, and poverty came to attract attention in Asian developing countries. In this paper, we focus on Bangladesh as a typical example of a developing country, and we make a survey of its country’s social security system. In particular, we researched on the constitutional provisions of PWDs, contents of the Disability Welfare Act, the role of the Ministry of Social Welfare, and the Department of Social Services. Bangladesh has a social security system. However, its system is not working well. This is because of the following reasons. The Bangladesh government does not know exactly the number of people with disabilities. There is no legislation to prohibit discrimination against persons with disabilities. The welfare system, for example, a pension plan for people with disabilities, is also inadequate. In addition,
persons targeted for the system is a small proportion. Due to the government’s vertical administrative structure, support systems for PWDs fail to work properly. Those policies come to virtually divide the
PWDs into women, children, and elderly persons. In Bangladesh, the future problem of a policy for persons with a disability is to increase the social security budget and to cooperate with an NGO that is making the anti−poverty measures and is making the welfare service for the disabled, rather than to legislate by law.

Bangladesh is identified as one of the countries with severe health workers shortage especially the rehabilitation professional. However, there is a lack of comprehensive data on human resources for the rehabilitation professional in formal and informal sectors. In this paper, we focus on Bangladesh as a typical example of a developing country, and we make a survey of its country's rehabilitation sectors. In particular, we researched the health strategy, the service delivery mechanism for persons with disabilities, the scope of training for the rehabilitation workers in governmental and non-governmental sectors, the role of Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Ministry of Social Welfare and Department of Social Services. Bangladesh has health and social security systems but the system is not working well. This is because of the following reasons, in Bangladesh, the Health care service delivery system does not include medical and social rehabilitation for persons with disabilities. Service facilities for rehabilitation therapy and medical care assistance are inadequate and extra costs are required to receive the services, but many persons with disabilities and their families cannot afford such services.

The paper aims to explore how culture, family and community-women have shaped women councillors' representation and participation in South Africa. It investigates the extent to which women ward councillors are gaining support from their male counterparts; other women councillors irrespective of political affiliation when women-related issues are raised in council meetings. The paper identifies reasons contributing to the non-support by key stakeholders when women-related issues are raised and when performing their duties. Post-1994 in South Africa, women's participation in politics is still a struggle. The number of women ward councillors have been fluctuating since the local government was reformed between 1995/96. Ward councillors are elected by local communities to represent their respective wards, to be accountable to the community that elected them. The paper is exploratory and qualitative in nature. It focuses on 104 Ward and Proportional Representative (PR) councillors from local municipalities in KwaZulu-Natal and Eastern Cape Provinces. Faceto-face and telephonic interviews were employed. Findings were analyzed using content analysis and themes were induced from the data. The paper revealed that culture is gradually changing due to laws introduced. Also, family support depends on a woman marital status and family involvement in politics. However, males did not support women-related issues, but women ward councillors supported each other irrespective of political affiliation on gender issues. Community-women support councillors through women's groups and community structures. The factors contributing to the non-support of gender-related matters include women competing with each other and political party influence.
