El objetivo de este artículo es conocer el proceso sincrético festivo del culto a la Virgen de Juquila en una comunidad urbana en la ciudad de Oaxaca, llamada San Juan Bautista Chapultepec o San Juanito. La visita a este santuario se inserta en determinadas fechas que se relacionan con el ciclo agrícola y tiene como objetivo agradecer la cosecha, pero también hacer peticiones sobre el control del tiempo: lluvias benéficas para la siembra y evitar la sequía, por lo que se observa en los peregrinos un conocimiento meteorológico y paisajístico sobre las épocas en que se debe visitar el espacio sagrado, qué tipo de rituales ofrecerle a la imagen y a qué santo invocar.
Así pues, partimos de un planteamiento etnográfico e histórico sobre esta
devoción. Los datos se obtuvieron a partir de investigaciones de campo que se realizaron entre 2018 y 2020 en los Valles Centrales y como parte complementaria en la región chatina. Además del trabajo de campo se consultaron acervos documentales (archivos parroquiales y publicaciones hemerográficas), se llevaron a cabo entrevistas con peregrinos y se recopilaron algunas narraciones populares sobre la aparición de los santos.

variety of mimetic representations included in the observance of major religious feasts in late medieval Krakow in southern Poland calls for closer scrutiny, though they are not easy to classify and their nature cannot be reduced to simple propositions. A special role in the liturgical ceremonies seems to have been reserved for carved figures, as suggest a number of wooden images from southern Poland. The Polish evidence of the use of carved figures is almost as rich as the German, Spanish, or English material, and its analysis will help to map more precisely the widespread practice of using carved figures in the late Middle Ages. 1 The function of carved images in early modern Poland varied from altarpiece sculpture through stationary ornament to processional figure. On the basis of their formal characteristics, these artefacts can be divided into two groups: (1) stationary figures (with or without articulated limbs), (2) mobile figures mounted on wheels (Palmesel). 2 Articulated figures represent paraphernalia from the public religious theatre that have fallen out of use by now, subject to episcopal and synodal prohibitions, the only exception being Nativity scenes and the Easter sepulchre where they may still be occasionally used to provide a 'historical' setting for biblical events. The persuasive power of a mother's breast: the most desperate act of the Virgin Mary's Advocacy1 SALVADOR RYAN (Dept. of History, NUI, Maynooth) Depictions of the Madonna and Child, which for centuries have adorned Catholic churches and burial grounds, tend to evoke warm responses from the majority who choose to behold what appears to be an idyllic and peaceful scene. A variation of this theme, such as the portrayal of the Virgin Mary breast-feeding her Divine Son, although less common, has also claimed great popularity among iconographers from the first centuries of Christianity. However, some popular late-medieval interpretations of the latter depiction suggest that far from being a representation of a serene mother and child at one, the iconography depicts a veritable battle of wills. The mother (Mary) suckles her Son (Christ) in a desperate effort to appease His anger, thus hoping to offset the terrible judgement He plans to impose on humanity. This paper explores the effect of the Virgin Mary's breasts on Christ the Judge, as understood in European popular piety of the late medieval period, and more specifically in Ireland. In the first instance, Mary employs her breasts to feed and nourish the infant Christ, calming His anger and setting Him at peace. However, when this method fails, she chooses to employ a more radical use of her breasts in a desperate effort to attain mercy for humanity in her role as Advocate, as discussed below. It is this second method, which is treated at greatest length here. An elaborate gesture of the Virgin Mary before her Son, popularised as a motif from the twelfth century onwards, is firstly traced to its pre-Christian roots. In addition, its subsequent manifestation across Europe, which includes an appear ance in sixteenth-century Gaelic Irish bardic poetry, is explored. What results is an examination of one of the most fascinating reli gious motifs of the late medieval period.

Only fairly recently has the discipline of art history formally established 'materiality' as a useful methodological framework, guided to some degree by the return to technical art history and the emergence of an anthropology of art. In Reliquary Tabernacles in fourteenth-century Italy: Image, Relic and Material Culture, Beth Williamson offers a lucidly written, "materially inflected" (p. 8), monographic study of a small group of surviving Trecento reliquary tabernacles, all originating from Siena, one of the leading artistic centers of the Italian peninsula during the medieval period. These Sienese reliquary tabernacles, twelve of which survive, are here introduced as both single-paneled reliquaries, or in a triptych format, depicting varying iconographies-from the Madonna Enthroned, to the standing Virgin and the Madonna of Humility. Nella Pinacoteca civica di Pieve di Cento (Bologna, Emilia-Romagna) è conservata una Madonna stante col Bambino del XIV secolo appartenente al gruppo delle Vierges ouvrantes o Madonne Scrigno in italiano.  Si tratta di un tipo di Madonne medievali ancora oggi largamente sconosciuto, nonché discusso in modo estremamente eterogeneo all’interno della critica internazionale. Le stesse Madonne Scrigno sono manufatti eterogenei, che seguono sì un filone comune e presentano elementi di accordo, ma allo stesso tempo mostrano un’unicità straordinaria.

Resumo: Virgem Abrideira é uma escultura com um mecanismo frontal de abertura. Quando está fechada, apresenta a Virgem entronizada; quando aberta, exibe outras imagens religiosas incorporadas na cavidade de seu corpo. Elaboradas a partir do século XIII, elas são tributárias da devoção mariana da Baixa Idade Média. Neste estudo, abordaremos duas dessas esculturas entalhadas em marfim na Península Ibérica. Interessa perceber a importância da materialidade (o marfim como símbolo da virgindade e da castidade de Maria), a disposição dos ciclos narrativos (geralmente organizados para serem vistos de baixo para cima) e o encontro do espectador com a visibilidade das imagens.

Lynn F. Jacobs: Opening Doors Jacobs' in jeder Hinsicht gewichtige Monografie ist das Produkt über zehnjähriger Arbeit, und das merkt man dem Buch auch an. Es wird sich-darin etwa Shirley Neilson Blums Studie von 1969 mit Fokus auf den Auftraggebern ablösend [1]-ohne Zweifel international als Standardwerk zum frühniederländischen Triptychon, wohl auch zur Frage nach den medialen Implikationen des Triptychonformats überhaupt, etablieren. Die schiere Fülle des reich bebilderten, im gegenstandsgerechten Querformat zweispaltig gedruckten Bandes mag zu der Annahme verleiten, hier wäre nun alles Entscheidende zur künstlerischen Auseinandersetzung mit dem seinerzeit boomenden Bildformat ans Licht gebracht. Doch bei genauerem Hinsehen stellt man erstaunt fest, dass die Handbuch-Qualität eher ein dem Fleiß und der breiten Forschungskenntnis der Autorin geschuldeter Nebeneffekt ist, angesichts einer vergleichsweise eng angelegten Fragestellung. So behandelt die Studie zwar ohne Zweifel ein repräsentatives Corpus, im Prinzip alle bedeutenden Triptychen der bekannteren Frühniederländer und einige mehr, von den ersten Keimen der ars nova über die nächste Generation, den Säkularisierer Bosch und die nach Zentren geordneten Maler des 16. Jahrhunderts bis zum letzten Wiederaufblühen bei Rubens. Keineswegs aber hat sie den Anspruch, all diese hinsichtlich des Verhältnisses von Inhalt, formaler Gestaltung und Medienspezifität umfänglich darzustellen. Vielleicht wäre dies auch zwischen zwei Buchdeckeln nicht zu realisieren. Vielmehr handelt es sich eigentlich um eine Studie zu Schwellen, die vom Trägermedium vorgegeben sind und von den Künstlern in unterschiedlicher Weise reflektiert und bespielt werden (14). Entscheidend, so Jacobs in dem für die Lehre besonders empfehlenswerten historisch argumentierenden Einführungsteil (1-30), ist die Tatsache, dass die Zeitgenossen, Künstler wie Betrachtende, das Triptychon nicht wie die Kunstgeschichte des 20. Jahrhunderts als flächige dreiteilige Tafelkonstellation mit betonter Mitte wahrgenommen haben, sondern als ein Bild mit Türen. Von diesem titelgebenden Sachverhalt, den die Autorin mit diversen Quellenbelegen untermauern kann, leitet sie unmittelbar zur für sie alles entscheidenden Schwellenfrage über, wie auch der Text immer wieder auf das Konzept "painting with doors" als maßgebliche Rahmenbedingung für das Spiel mit den Schwellen zurückkommt. Das postulierte Kausalverhältnis zwischen dem Türkonzept und einer 'Schwellenarbeit' als resultierendem Schwerpunkt künstlerischer Gestaltung betrifft zwei verschiedene Übergänge: zunächst den massiven, von wechselnden Ansichten und mechanischen Prozessen definierten Grenzverlauf zwischen Außen-und Innenseite, der ohne Zweifel in engstem wird sie letztlich zum Standardwerk und Ausgangspunkt zukünftiger Forschung machen und das seit einigen Jahren zunehmende Bewusstsein für die produktiven Spezifika des Triptychons nachhaltig im internationalen kunsthistorischen Diskurs verankern.

The depiction of the Virgin Mary as subject matter in the twelfth century is ubiquitous yet strategic. Two objectives were met with the production of a Virgin Mary reliquary, firstly as the mediator between the suffering mankind and the heavenly Christ acting as a human incarnation of religious power, and secondly, as a reminder of Jesus Christ’s mortality by encouraging patrons to achieve similar holy power. The second objective was especially important: during the Byzantine period (c. 330 – 1453 CE) the Virgin Mary was known as Theotokos or ‘god bearer’, which supported the idea Mary’s importance to the Church.

This article discusses the ways in which the physical presence of consecrated virgins was perceived, described, and subsequently altered in Late Antiquity. In the course of the fourth and fifth centuries CE, through codes that regulated their behaviour and outward appearance, and through the assignment of specific ritual functions and spaces, bishops constructed a new and long-lasting image of consecrated virgins. The resulting model, the authors argue, was shaped by notions regarding female anatomy as well as by their association with the Virgin Mary; it was similar to a precious reliquary: a container whose aesthetic indicated the consecrated nature of its interior.

The concept of the medieval city is fixed in the modern imagination, conjuring visions of fortified walls, towering churches, and winding streets. In Riemenschneider in Rothenburg, Katherine M. Boivin investigates how medieval urban planning and artistic programming worked together to form dynamic environments, demonstrating the agency of objects, styles, and spaces in mapping the late medieval city.

Using altarpieces by the famed medieval artist Tilman Riemenschneider as touchstones for her argument, Boivin explores how artwork in Germany’s preeminent medieval city, Rothenburg ob der Tauber, deliberately propagated civic ideals. She argues that the numerous artistic pieces commissioned by the city’s elected council over the course of two centuries built upon one another, creating a cohesive structural network that attracted religious pilgrims and furthered the theological ideals of the parish church. By contextualizing some of Rothenburg’s most significant architectural and artistic works, such as St. James’s Church and Riemenschneider’s Altarpiece of the Holy Blood, Boivin shows how the city government employed these works to establish a local aesthetic that awed visitors, raising Rothenburg’s profile and putting it on the pilgrimage map of Europe.

Carefully documented and convincingly argued, this book sheds important new light on the history of one of Germany’s major tourist destinations. It will be of considerable interest to medieval art historians and scholars working in the fields of cultural and urban history.

This study examines an exceptional articulated sculpture made toward the end of the XVIII century and found in the mining town of Zacatecas, Mexico. The life-size sculpture in question is in reality a liturgical puppet of Jesus Christ that dramatically performs during Holy Week. The image is here studied within the larger context of medieval puppets, the Church's liturgy, mystery plays, early automata and modern psycho-social theories. The sculpture appears to continue a pre-Columbian attitude towards puppets as ixiptla or actor-impersonators. The novelty of the research is in the discovery of the mechanism for making this actor "perform" during one of the most dramatic moments of the Passion.

This paper aims to provide an in-depth survey of grand-scale medieval Italian tabernacles and other types of closing altarpieces with all of their wings – or substantial parts thereof – still preserved (1200–1435). Most such altarpieces, enclosing a statue of the Virgin Mary or a Saint, come from the culturally homogeneous and generally conservative regions of the Central Apennines, in particular from Abruzzo. Structure, provenance, original location, function, patronage, iconography are only a few of the many questions raised by the surviving examples here discussed within
a broader European frame. Notwithstanding the great variety and composite character of medieval altar furnishings, three major types of medieval Italian closing retables will be here described – according to Claude Lapaire’s formal classification (1969 and 1972): the tabernacle-altarpiece in the strict sense of the word, i.e. an open ciborium with the pedestal, rear wall, and canopy, equipped with carved
or painted bi-fold wings; the polygonal tabernacle-altarpiece (‘le retable à tabernacle polygonal’); and the cupboard-altarpiece (‘le retable en forme d’armoire’). In Central Apennine regions all of these types coexisted throughout the fourteenth century at least, resisting the spread of Tuscan polyptychs.

La Reforma auspiciada por los protestantes en el siglo XVI tuvo su correlato en la Contrarreforma católica nacida a partir del concilio de Trento (1545-1563). El cisma producido tuvo una enorme influencia en la expresión artística. Nuevos tipos iconográficos, más acordes con el credo contrarreformista, sustituyen a modelos antiguos. Particularmente, la figura de María se convertirá en campo de batalla ideológico y estético. Un tipo iconográfico sorprendente, la Virgen abridera, sobrevivirá en el mundo hispánico por su capacidad de adaptación al nuevo mensaje y, seguramente, por la fidelidad femenina a una imagen con la que las mujeres mostraron gran identificación.

Como un reducto de la cultura española en los actuales Estados Uni-
dos, los santos de madera elaborados hoy en Nuevo México nos hablan de
unas comunidades hispanas en busca de los símbolos de su identidad, de la
esencia de su cultura, frente al movimiento uniformizador de las modernas
sociedades industrializadas y a la cada vez menos hegemónica cultura
anglosajona de los Estados Unidos. Los santos de Nuevo México, tras una
época de recesión e incluso de manipulación por parte de los angloamericanos, se han convertido en uno de los puntos centrales de las reivindicaciones culturales de los hispanos de Nuevo México. La colección de imágenes religiosas del Museo de América, realizadas por Max Roybal, santero contemporáneo de Albuquerque, y realizadas de acuerdo con los patrones tradicionales, ilustran este nuevo significado que la sociedad hispana de Nuevo México ha sabido dar a uno de sus productos culturales y religiosos más significativos.

Wooden Madonna tabernacles from c.1150–c.1350 are today scarce, and it is therefore diffi cult to get a complete understanding of their original appearance and variations. Nevertheless there are still preserved at least fi fteen Madonna tabernacles, or substantial fragments of them, in Scandinavia, which can give us a picture of the variety of appearance and form these large tabernacles had in this period. The surviving Scandinavian Madonna tabernacles have, like the southern European ones, quite a lot of variation in types and appearance, both in their closed and open positions. The largest group consisted of niches with relief-fi gures on the interior when open, but the scenes could also be painted, or painting and sculpture combined on the same surface. A neglected aspect of these tabernacles is their appearance in the closed position. Often the wings of the tabernacles have their original painting preserved on the exterior, even if the reverse has been overpainted or the wings have been restructured. Many of these original surfaces had non-fi gural decoration, such as foliage, mono-chrome surfaces in red or green, or a combination of simple patterns of red and green.

By the middle of the 12th C, the pilgrimage routes linking Western France and Northern Spain were dotted with small parish churches. These churches shared in common a portal configuration comprised of a set of concentric, inwardly stepped archivolts, which surround a specifically tympanum-less portal entry. The development of this archivolted portal has been shown to have had its origins on the Iberian Peninsula in the early stages of the Reconquest as a response to the spatial dynamics of the Mozarabic church. In essence a visual compression of the segmented barrel vaults of the nave, which appear to telescope into the smaller arch of the apse opening, the series of arches over the tympanum-less portal define a porch-like space that serves to lengthen and prolong the act of entry. In so doing, this architectural unit delineated a liminal zone where the journey from the external, secular world into the interior sacred space replicated on a micro level the macro tenets of pilgrimage. Described as a sequenced and layered experience that is both "betwixt and between," both micro and macro journeys were meant to engender a metaphysical transition, if not a spiritual transformation.

Dies gilt insbesondere für Epochen wie das westliche Mittelalter, in denen das Wissen über Bilder und ihre Träger kaum kodifi ziert wurde. Eine ernsthafte Verfolgung selbstbezüglicher Phänomene in Richtung »vor dem Zeitalter der Kunst« verspricht aber auch, die Trennschärfe in der Betrachtung bildlicher Selbstrefl exivität überhaupt zu erhöhen. Wie Bilder im späten Mittelalter gerade auf ihr Trägermedium Bezug nehmen und dieses in eine religiös motivierte Selbstbefragung des Bildes integrieren können, wird an zwei Beispielen skizziert. Bildanthropologische Parameter »Welche Fragen stellt die Bildwissenschaft?«, das bedeutet derzeit eigentlich: »Welche Bildwissenschaft stellt welche Fragen?« Aus guten Gründen sprechen sich viele der von kunsthistorischer Seite involvierten Bildforscher für eine Mehrzahl von Bildwissenschaften aus, 1 und de facto gibt es einige sinnvolle und dennoch methodisch und gegenständlich differierende Ansätze, sich dem enigmatischen Phänomen »Bild« zu nähern. Innerhalb eines bildwissenschaftlichen Fragenhorizontes ist der folgende Ansatz unter denjenigen zu verorten, die auf die soziale Bildpraxis, die Symbolisierungsbzw. Die* bescheidene spätgotische Holzmadonna im Limburger Domschatz (Abb. 1) scheint eines Aufsatzes kaum würdig zu sein. Die nur 78,5 cm hohe Plastik zeigt eine Muttergottes, die, streng, frontal und symmetrisch gestaltet, auf einer einfachen Bank sitzt und ein nacktes, stehendes Christuskind auf ihrem linken Knie hält. Da die Figur sich in einem schlechten Zustand befindet, bietet sie dem heutigen Beschauer kein ansehnliches Beispiel mittelalterlicher Schnitzarbeit. Störend wirken vor allem die vielen Stellen, wo das ursprüngliche Eichenholz mit hellerem Holz ergänzt und ausgebessert wurde. Zu diesen Ergänzungen gehört die ganze Kopfpartie Mariens, die grober geschnitzt wurde und lebloser erscheint als der Kopf und Körper des Christuskindes. Dazu kommt die sehr rauhe Textur der Oberfläche. Trotz alledem, die Figur ist -von besonderer Bedeutung. Denn die Limburger Madonna gehört zu der Bildart der sogenannten Schreinmadonna. Diese heute rare Bildgattung hat sich im Spätmittelalter sowohl als sehr populär aber auch als extrem kontrovers erwiesen. Als Schreinmadonna ist die Limburger Figur hohl und vom Schlüsselbein hinab auf einer zentralen vertikalen Linie aufklappbar (Abb. 2). Leider ist heute die Limburger Madonna im Hohlraum leer. In der Regel bargen aber die Schreinmadonnen im Inneren plastische Gestalten sowie öfters auch figürliche Bemalungen, so daß sie im offenen Zustand einem Triptychon ähnelten. Auch innerhalb der Gattung Schreinmadonna ist die Limburger Figur von Interesse, da sie nicht nur als einzige Schreinmadonna im mittelrheinischen Gebiet auftaucht, sondern weil sie auch als eines der sehr seltenen Exemplare aus dem westdeutschen Raum anzusehen ist. Sie ist sogar eines der wenigen Beispiele ihrer Art im westlichen Mi tteleuropa. Die Limburger Figur, die bis in die späten siebziger Jahre im ehemaligen Benediktiner-Kloster Schönau im Taunus ihren Platz hatte und der dortigen Pfarrei Strüth gehört, wurde in der Literatur bisher lediglich in Katalog-und Inventarbänden kurz erwähnt. Von diesen Schriften ist eine halbseitige Beschreibung von Magnus BACKES die ausführlichste 1 .

This book focuses on the Shrine Madonnas, or Vierges ouvrantes, sculptures which conceal within their bodies complex carved and/or painted iconographies. The Shrine Madonna emerged in Europe at the end of the 1200s, and reached a peak of popularity during the following three centuries. I argue that the appearance of these objects—predicated as they are on the dynamic of concealment, revelation, and fragmentation—points to the changing roles of vision and sensation in the complex performative ways the audiences were expected to engage with devotional art, both in public and in private. The book, which offers the first sustained analysis of these fascinating sculptures, considers them in terms of the rhetoric of secrecy, the discourse of containment, and the tropes of unveiling, and within the context of the increasingly important roles of sight and touch in late medieval devotional art. Aside from the objects themselves, the author considers evidence from play texts, travel logs, convent chronicles, descriptions of ceremonial feast day liturgies, automata diagrams and descriptions, visionary accounts, philosophical debates on the Eucharist, devotional handbooks, and treatises on optics, the senses, anatomy, childbirth, and memory. Specifically, I explore how the statues were associated with the processes of seeing and memory-making, and how they functioned as instruments of revelatory knowledge and spiritual reformation in the context of late medieval European culture and devotional art.

This paper was given at a one-day workshop entitled "Art and Death: Death and Dying" at the Courtauld Institute of Art in July 2012. It presents some of my doctoral research on a Vierge ouvrante sculpture from Maubuisson, France, and its conceptual relations to the post-mortem dissection of the monastery's founder, Blanche of Castile.

The problem of properly presenting physical vestiges of the divine—relics, images, and the Eucharist—was a preoccupation in France during the thirteenth century. With the specters of idolatry and sacrilege haunting either end of the spectrum, viewers needed adequate visual cues to calibrate their modes of veneration. An examination of Gothic ivories, with their characteristic forms (diptychs and polyptychs) and micro-architectural frames, reveals one strategy devised to alert viewers to the presence of the sacred. Two Old Testament typologies—the Ark of the Covenant and the Throne of Solomon—furnished a tripartite visual metaphor to prompt proper adoration of the divine.
