Technical and Business Writing

Research activity is an integral component in the formation of professions. Evidence shows that business and technical communication specialists conduct research in both academic and practitioner career fields. In other disciplines, course work has been recognized as the primary means for preparing students to conduct and consume research. Yet, no publications document the status of research methods course work for U.S. students specializing in business and technical communication. This study provides a descriptive basis for assessing three areas in those courses: research methods topics, required readings, and teaching or assessment methods. An analysis of the results leads to a proposed agenda for preparing students specializing in business and technical communication for their future work roles in both academe and industry.

English abstract
This book is the first worldwide handbook of Portuguese Technical Translation. It covers theoretical texts on writing, translating and creating terminological neologisms; it also covers practical subjects in technical translation, such as internationalization, localization, and project management, CAT tools, QA issues, checklists, and international standards. It also presents the largest Portuguese terminological vocabulary in this domain.

International patient experience design (I-PXD) presents a heuristic for addressing this situation. I-PXD helps individuals identify variables affecting usability in different international contexts. Persons working in health and medical communication can use this I-PXD heuristic to address usability expectations in various international contexts.

Using activity theory as a supplement to genre studies, this article explores a case of the disintegration of a traditional engineering firm. It focuses on the causes of such disintegration and the role of different types of communication in serving as sites where contradictions can be brought to visibility and resolution. The authors' goal is both to show the power of activity theory in illuminating issues of tension, contradiction, and dissonance that lead to the breakup of the original organization into two separate firms and point to fundamental differences in the cultures of traditional engineering firms and software design enterprises.

ABSTRACT How do actors in an organization succeed in sharing meaning? In many communication handbooks authors present an overview of all the ways in which employees can communicate with each other and their clients. Keuning (1991: 213-221), for example, considers that actors can communicate internally and externally, and use written and oral media. He also explains the difference between horizontal, vertical and lateral communication. It is curious to see, however, that there is little empirical evidence on how actors really communicate. Of course, it is difficult for researchers to get permission from companies to do research in actual communication inside their organization. Firth (1991: X) suggests the main reasons for companies for refusing to collaborate are lack of time, no interest in the research and fear of intrusion into internal practices.

The technical communication service course exists with a range of institutional contexts involving different departments, programs, and faculty. Technical communication program administrators can benefit from mechanisms that help them identify the contexts and stakeholders invested in the service course. This entry presents a research-based approach, contextualized course design, for engaging effectively in such activities.

Key to starting your business is awareness of the market, the prospect, the demand, the product/service and the best price to offer for products and services. But this is just too flat to state. Business is more than a stock of concepts defined and monetized but more about engagements, interaction, skill, knowledge, understanding, communication, exchange, values, strategies, plan, assets, resources, capital, finance, support, sponsorship and options.
Everyone isn’t going to do the same thing; you aren’t necessarily going to do what others are doing. There are many options, choose one, focus on it, plan it out, send it out, set it up, invest in it, have fun with it, communicate it, localize it, customize it, trade it, redesign it, package it, project it, promote it and market it. That’s your option for profit when you market it.
Marketing might be a big challenge for you; most especially, when you don’t have adequate knowledge and skill, can’t communicate with understanding and can’t consequently engage your prospects. But you know your purpose. It’s right to believe that if your purpose is good enough, then someone out there would certainly be interested in what you are offering.
In view of that, you have to get yourself out there and find who that someone is. Meeting someone, you start presenting yourself and your something, and it doesn’t have to be what and how everybody around has been presenting.
You have something new, that’s what you’re communicating and how you are communicating it is important too. Don’t be afraid, someone there is already wired to accept your new connection, with your new something; and, the good news is, if it is really valuable and unique, because you have explored and veered away from common offer, then someone will be appreciating it, you didn’t expect so soon,
Moreover, everything is worth the try; when you have a good purpose and your purpose is to impress and expand the scope of the market, or to make a milestone that the industry will find relevant, or even to disrupt your industry. Whatever your purpose of getting started is, you should know how profitable it is. It may not necessarily be among the hot deals, where everyone has been veering to, because of the money coming from there, in the industry. It might just be your invention.
And what do you think you are doing with an invention in the saturated market? You are doing something everyone wants to see, because people want something new, as a result, it’s not going to be profitless. For this reason, don’t look down on your ideas. Come up with something new and relevant to the industry, and the goodnews is, no one can predict, you might be the first to profit real big from it, and keep all the profit to yourself, to fill your pocket more than you nixed and fulfill your duty.
Accordingly, don’t be afraid to start; don’t be afraid to go out there with your big ideas. Don’t be afraid to come up with something new, it might be what everyone else isn’t thinking of, and it might not just be an innovation, it might be your own invention.
