Polychromy of Ancient Sculpture

Die Toga wird als eines der symbolträchtigsten Klei- dungsstücke der Antike betrachtet. Wir kennen sie vor allem von Bildern und aus Schriftquellen. Ausgehend von diesem allerdings ziemlich lückenhaften Quellenmaterial wurde die Toga bezüglich Farbe, Dekor und Kontext, in welchem sie korrekterweise getragen wurde, in unter- schiedliche Typen aufgeschlüsselt. Obwohl solche Typo- logien von Kunsthistorikern und Archäologen gern als Hilfsmittel zur Darstellung ihrer Interpretation verwen- det werden, haben sie auch ihre Grenzen, gerade wenn es darum geht, zu verstehen, wie die Kleidung in der Antike wahrgenommen wurde. Die Autorinnen verschieben in ihrer Arbeit den Fokus auf die Oberflächentextur und die Überreste originaler Bemalung auf Togen oder Tuni- cen von Statuen und untersuchen die Farben als einen wichtigen, bisher oft übersehenen Aspekt in der Vermitt- lung des Dresscodes. Die Polychromie von Togastatuen verbunden mit dem aus antiken Textilien gewonnenen Wissen (zum Beispiel über Faserqualitäten und Färb- stoffe) führen zu einer Vielfalt von neuen möglichen In- terpretationen der antiken römischen Toga. Die Unter- suchung gelangt zu einer Reihe von neuen Informatio- nen, die inskünftig berücksichtigt und mit dem bisherigen Wissensstand zur antiken Toga verglichen werden müs- sen.

Considérée comme l’un des vêtements les plus emblé- matiques de l’antiquité, la toge nous est principalement connue au travers des sources écrites et iconographiques. Ces sources étant assez fragmentaires, la toge a fait l’objet d’une typologie basée sur la couleur, la décoration et les contextes sociaux dans lesquels elle était de mise. Bien que ces typologies élaborées par les historiens de l’art et les archéologues servent encore régulièrement à fonder leur interprétation, elles ont aussi leurs limites, surtout lorsqu’il s’agit de comprendre comment l’habillement était perçu dans l’Antiquité. Les auteurs de l’article ont concentré leurs efforts sur la texture superficielle et sur les restes de peinture originale conservés sur les toges et les tuniques des statues. Elles étudient les couleurs en les considérant comme un aspect important, souvent négligé jusqu’ici, de la médiation du code vestimentaire antique. Confrontée aux données issues des dernières avancées de la recherche sur les textiles antiques (par exemple sur les qualités des fibres et sur les colorants), la polychromie des statues de personnages en toge offre diverses possibi- lités nouvelles d’interprétation. L’article livre une série d’informations dont il conviendra désormais de tenir compte, en les comparant aux données sur la toge antique actuellement disponibles.

The gypsum figure from the so-called Isis Tomb at Vulci (Italy) represents a woman or goddess with one hand extended to give or receive an offering (British Museum 1850,0227.1). Dating probably to about 575–550 bc, the figure wears a long tunic with the remains of a painted border at the hem, a belt that was once gilded, a cloak and sandals that were originally painted red. Evidence of very fine painted decoration survives on the borders of the garments, in particular towards the base of the figure, and is partially visible to the naked eye. In an attempt to reconstruct the painted border of the tunic, technical imaging (infrared-reflected, ultraviolet- and visible-induced luminescence imaging) and Raman spectroscopic examination of microscopic samples were undertaken. The visualization of the inverted lotus embroidery on the hem of the tunic using technical imaging suggests a new interpretation of its pattern. The results of the analysis are discussed in light of the contemporaneous archaeological evidence for Etruscan clothing. Finally, a reconstruction of the shape and pattern of the cloak is suggested.

Nuestra propuesta de la policromía del Augusto de la Prima Porta ha consistido en una investigación previa y una puesta en práctica posterior sobre una reproducción de la escultura a tamaño real, basadas ambas en un enfoque procedimental (sobre los métodos de aplicación de la pintura) partiendo de los estudios realizados por los arqueólogos y químicos de los Museos Vaticanos, que han sido de carácter técnico-material (caracterización de aglutinantes y pigmentos).

Résumé : Acquis en 1905 par G. Bénédite sur le marché des antiquités d’Égypte et sans provenance connue, le buste en calcaire d’Akhénaton aujourd’hui conservé au musée du Louvre (sous le numéro d’inventaire E 11076) est un chef-d’œuvre de l’histoire de l’art égyptien, mondialement connu, même si sa forme et sa fonction spécifiques continuent à poser question. Cette sculpture exceptionnelle a été ré-étudiée dans le cadre d’un
projet de recherche international intitulé RetroColor 3D, financé par la Région Nouvelle Aquitaine au laboratoire Archeovision – UMS 3657 SHS-3D du CNRS (à l’Université Bordeaux Montaigne) et dont l’objectif était d’établir une méthodologie qui permette un rendu le plus juste et le plus exact possible de la polychromie d’objets détériorés dans leurs modèles 3D. Tout en relatant cette analyse transdisciplinaire, fondée sur un dialogue permanent entre l’expertise en 3D et l’histoire de l’art du domaine culturel concerné, l’article explique comment une telle démarche a conduit à une meilleure compréhension de la fonction originale du buste dans le processus de création du portrait royal durant la période dite Amarnienne.

Abstract: Purchased in 1905 by G. Bénédite from the Antiquity market in Egypt, the unprovenanced limestone bust of Akhenaten now kept in the Louvre Museum (under the inventory number E 11076) is a world-famous masterpiece of ancient Egyptian art, though its particular shape and function still remained problematic. This exceptional piece of sculpture was investigated anew in the context of an international research project entitled RetroColor 3D, funded by the Région Nouvelle Aquitaine at Archeovision – UMS 3657 SHS-3D of the CNRS (at the University of Bordeaux Montaigne), with the aim of establishing a methodology for accurate and faithful rendering of the polychromy of deteriorated objects in 3D models. Reporting on this transdisciplinary analysis, based on a continuous dialogue between 3D expertise and art history of the relevant cultural context, the article explains how this led to a better understanding of the bust’s original function in the creation of royal portraiture during the (so-called) Amarna period.

The twenty-first century has witnessed a growing interest in antique and medieval polychromy. By now it is generally acknowledged that colour is an integral part of their sculpture. In the present special issue of CLARA, scholars from various disciplines explore different aspects of sculptural polychromy in marble, glass, stucco, wood and terracotta – from Antiquity to the Renaissance: The multisensory perception of colour, the interplay of colour and texture, the treatment of sculpted surfaces, the importance of gilding and polishes, and the challenges when reconstructing lost polychromy. Combining empirical and theoretical data, the special issue includes hitherto unpublished colour reconstructions and scientific details.

This collection of articles is the result of a seminar with the title Perceiving Matter: Visual, Material and Sensual Communication from Antiquity to the –Middle Ages and Beyond, held April 5th 2019 at the Museum of Cultural History (MCH), University of Oslo.
