Peninsular War

This paper examines the British sieges of Ciudad Rodrigo and Badajoz from the Peninsula Campaign of the Napoleonic Wars. Following an introduction on siege warfare, the principal British characters and organizations are introduced. Subsequent chapters cover earlier sieges at the two Spanish fortresses. When looking at the 1812 sieges of Ciudad Rodrigo and Badajoz in detail, attention is given to the decisions made by the British commander, Sir Arthur Wellesley (later the Duke of Wellington). While the execution of his siege operations resulted in high casualty rates, Wellington lacked the means necessary to carry out siege warfare in the most efficient manner. vi., 97 pages. iv ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

A lo largo de las legislaturas de 1820 y 1821 las Cortes españolas trataron cuatro importantes temas de carácter monetario, que fueron el diseño de la nueva moneda constitucional basada en el real de vellón, la conversión de las cecas en Fábricas Nacionales de Moneda, la transformación de la Junta de Comercio y Moneda en la Junta Directiva de Moneda y, finalmente, el tema que nos ocupa, el proyecto de resello nacional.

El libro se centra en un cuerpo defensivo propio del Principado de Asturias y de carácter popular, creado en los inicios del levantamiento contra las fuerzas
napoleónicas. En él, utilizando fuentes de primera mano y testimonios de los
protagonistas, se aborda su gestión, operaciones, desarrollo y sus múltiples
funciones, aparte de la propia del combate, que algunas veces podrían sonar novelescas si no hubieran sido reales, como el espionaje y contraespionaje, correos a través de las líneas enemigas, un gobierno en la zona ocupada, etc. Pero no sólo eso, sino que se pueden observar los ecos de la nueva España constitucional, realmente
modernos, en unos paisanos con obligaciones y derechos de ciudadanos desde 1808 -por tanto, antes de la propia Constitución de Cádiz-. Normativas para hacer frente al Ejército imperial, intrigas, zozobra, heroísmo, lucha contra el invasor pero también colaboracionismo y conductas sospechosas, etc., se entremezclan y se sacan a la luz de manera pormenorizada, constituyendo una buena aportación a nuestra Guerra de Independencia.

The French side of the Napoleonic Wars is often seen from a strategic point of view, or in terms of military organization and battlefield tactics, or through officers’ memoirs. It is rarely seen from the perspective of the lowest ranks of the army, and the experience of the ordinary soldiers is less well known and is often misunderstood. That is why this account, based on more than 1,600 letters written by French soldiers of the Napoleonic armies, is of such value. It adds to the existing literature by exploring every aspect of the life of a French soldier during the period 1799-1815.

The book will be fascinating and informative reading for military and cultural historians, but it will also appeal to anyone who is interested in the war experience of common soldiers. It offers the English-speaking audience a French view of a conflict which is too often limited to the traditional memoirs of Captain Coignet, Colonel Marbot or Sergeant Bourgogne.

En Abril de 1812, entre los 16.000 aliados que cercaban Badajoz, se encontraban 6.200 portugueses listos para el combate. En la región más extensa entre el Alentejo y la Extremadura española se encontraban 51.000 aliados, de los cuales 20.000 eran portugueses decididos a entrar en España para ayudar a combatir los invasores franceses. Y lo hicieron bien! Decenas de miles de portugueses combatieron al lado de británicos, alemanes y españoles en la Guerra Peninsular hasta su final en Toulouse/Francia en Abril de 1814. En tierras de España reposan millares de muertos portugueses, en Ciudad Rodrigo y Salamanca, en los arrabales de Madrid, junto a las murallas de Burgos y de San Sebastián, en el campo de Vitória, en las escarpas y contraescarpas de los Pirineos, etc. Un enorme sacrificio de la nación portuguesa por la liberación española y se probó así, una vez más, que Portugal es un país fiable, qué cumple su palabra y combate al lado de sus aliados. Desde la Batalla del Salado en 1340 hasta Badajoz en 1812 y llegando a los días de hoy donde portugueses, británicos y españoles combaten codo a codo en las  montañas de Afganistán.

Jeremiah Fitzhenry, Wexford rebel and commander of the 2nd Battalion of the Irish Legion/Regiment, was captured by Spanish irregulars in 1811. Later it was discovered he had defected to Wellington. Accorded a free pardon by the British Crown, for the second time in his life, he retired to his family lands in County Wexford.

Tom Duggett’s Gothic Romanticism is a compellingly ambitious study of the pursuit of a purer and better gothic in late-eighteenth- and early-nineteenth-century England. Focusing on Wordsworth and the Lake Poets’ attempt to refine a coarser, more sensational gothic as set forth in the novels of Radcliffe and Scott and in antiquarian curiosities, Duggett weaves sustained analysis of their poetry with thoughtful commentary on medieval architectural imagery and history, the turn to conservative politics, and educational reform. This multileveled investigation demonstrates in engaging prose the centrality of a cultivated rhetoric of a gothic aesthetic in this period while provocatively suggesting its relevance to a post-9/11 era where architecture “has assumed an importance that seemed without precedent.” Gothic Romanticism goes far in detailing such a poetic, cultural, and historical precedent. - MLA

Sièges de Saragosse fue, por lo tanto, la obra con la que en 1840 Louis-François Lejeune se inicia en el sendero del género autobiográfico. Para él escribir era otra forma de pintar. Lo explica ya en el subtítulo de la obra afirmando que va a abordar los hechos haciendo «Historia y pintura de los acontecimientos» que tuvieron lugar en Zaragoza durante los años 1808 y 1809. Durante toda su vida se había valido de los pigmentos y de la técnica aprendida en el taller de Valenciennes para cantar las glorias del Consulado y del Imperio de las que había sido testigo. Ahora, superada a la barrera de los sesenta años, iba a utilizar las palabras con el mismo fin, añadiendo además la voluntad de ofrecer el testimonio de una generación que había protagonizado las jornadas más gloriosas de la reciente historia de Francia. Y el resultado tendrá, sin lugar a dudas, carácter pictórico porque se impone su voluntad de ir más allá del diario de operaciones y no conformarse con llevar a cabo una obra útil en las academias y en las escuelas militares, como habían pretendido Rogniat o Suchet. Fernand Fleuret llegará a afirmar que sus memorias «son las más emocionantes, completas y mejor escritas […] de todas las que conocemos»105. Resumen: Este artículo sintetiza uno de los capítulos de la Tesis doctoral del autor: El Ejército del Centro en la provincia de Castellón. Historia militar y arqueología de los campos de batalla, en la Primera Guerra Carlista, (1833-1840). En él se estudian y analizan los proyectiles esféricos documentados en el escenario de la sangrienta batalla de las Useras, ocurrida cuando el general Leopoldo O'Donnell, al frente de sus fuerzas, acudió para socorrer a Lucena del Cid que se encontraba asediada desde hacía semanas por las tropas carlistas. El análisis de la distribución espacial de estos hallazgos permite situar con precisión el suceso histórico y su desarrollo. Muchos proyectiles presentan peculiares deformaciones que se relacionan con la energía que llevaban en el momento de impacto. De este modo se identifican gran cantidad de disparos a corta y muy corta distancia que ayudan a esclarecer las causas de la derrota que sufrió el líder rebelde, Ramón Cabrera, frente a las tropas del Ejército del Centro. AbstRAct: This article summarizes one of the chapters of the author's doctoral thesis: The Center Army in the province of Castellón. Military history and battlefields archaeology, in the First Carlist War, (1833-1840). This article examines and analyses the spherical projectiles documented in the scene of the bloody Battle of the Useras, which occurred when general Leopoldo O'Donnell, at the head of his forces, came to the aid Lucena del Cid who had been besieged for weeks by the Carlist troops. The spatial distribution analysis of these findings allows the historical event and its development to be precisely located. Many projectiles present peculiar deformations that are related with the energy they were carrying at the moment of impact. In this way, they identify a large number of shots at short and very short distances that help to clarify the causes of the defeat suffered by the rebel leader, Ramon Cabrera, in front of the Center Army troops.

This is a biography of a Nova-Scotian black soldier who served in the British Army during the Napoleonic War, and later settled in Liverpool when working as a sailor. It will be source led in format, and comments from myself will be limited to clarification of contemporary events. It is inspired by Fryer’s Staying Power, The History of Black People in Britain, (1984), Chater’s Untold Histories: Black People in England and Wales During the Period of the British Slave Trade, 1660-1807, (2011), and Costello’s Black Liverpool: The Early History of Britain’s Oldest Black Community, 1730-1918, (2001).

Resumen: Este artículo estudia los orígenes y la evolución de la propaganda centrada en Juan Martín Díez, " el Empecinado " , durante la guerra de la Independencia (1808-1814). Durante la invasión francesa de España, el Empecinado pasó de ser un simple campesino a convertirse en uno de los jefes guerrilleros más importantes. Esta evolución se debió al talento del Empecinado para hacer la guerra irregular, pero también al uso masivo y permanente de la propaganda. Abstract: This paper studies the genesis and evolution of propaganda about Juan Martín Díez, called the " Empecinado " , during the Peninsular War (1808-1814). During the French invasion of Spain, the " Empecinado " went from being a simple peasant to become one of the most important guerrilla leaders. This development is largely due to the talent of the " Empecinado " to make the irregular war, but also because of a massive and permanent use of propaganda.

In 1810 Wellington wanted to assure that Portugal could be defended, the Anglo-Portuguese Army’ “Sanctuary”. Napoleon Bonaparte decided to try, for the third time, to conquer Portugal sending his best and biggest Peninsular Army under the command of “l’enfant Cheri de la victoire” André Massèna. Like Soult before him, Massèna failed. He never passed the Lines of Torres Vedras.
In 1811 the strategy was still defensive but the attitude proactive.  Many offensive operations were carried out. The main goal was to permanently block any French offensive towards Portugal and the Anglo-Portuguese Army fought beyond Portuguese borders. Very important Battles took place like Fuentes de Oñoro, Albuera or Arroymolinos. In the end of 1811 The Anglo-Portuguese Army was now a fearless force, probably one of the best Armies of the time.
In 1812 the goal of Portuguese, British and Spanish is to conquer Madrid. Wellington will go further till Burgos but the conditions were not yet ready to go any further. Back to the “sanctuary”, knowing the French disaster in Russia and now with operational command over the Spanish Army, he will lead his enlarged Allied Army in an offensive campaign that will lead to the final defeat of the French forces in Toulouse France in 1814.

Em 1810 Wellington assegurava que Portugal podia ser defendido, o “santuário” do Exército Anglo-Português. Napoleão Bonaparte decidiu fazer a terceira tentativa para conquistar o País e enviou o seu melhor exército sob o comando de um dos melhores Marechais, “l’enfant Cheri de la victoire” André Massèna. Tal como Soult, Massèna falhou. Não passou as Linhas de Torres Vedras.
Em 1811 a estratégia era ainda defensiva mas a atitude proactiva. Já se podiam efetuar operações ofensivas de âmbito limitado. O objetivo principal era  fechar permanentemente os acessos a Portugal: Desta forma, o Exército Anglo-Português combateu para lá da fronteira Portuguesa e registaram-se importantes Batalhas, entre outras, Fuentes de Oñoro, Albuera, Arroyomolinos. No final de 1811 o Exército Anglo-Português é uma força temível, provavelmente o melhor Exército daquele tempo.     
Em 1812 o objetivo de Portugueses, Britânicos e Espanhóis é a conquista de Madrid. Wellington avança ainda até Burgos mas as condições para uma ofensiva final ainda não estavam garantidas. De volta ao seu “santuário”, sabendo do desastre francês na Rússia e agora com a autoridade operacional sobre o Exército Espanhol, inicia uma ofensiva geral que expulsará os Franceses da Península Ibérica e que só terminará com a derrota final em Toulouse, França em 1814.

Thomas Staunton St. Clair (1785-1847) was born in Gibraltar into a military family. He embarked for Portugal during the Peninsular War, having successfully obtained a transfer to the Portuguese Army as a Major in the 21st Infantry Regiment of the Line. From 1810 to 1811 he fought at Bussaco (1810), Massena’s Retreat (1811), Fuentes d’Oñoro (1811), and the 2nd Siege of Badajos (1811). In 1812 he travelled to London, where he commissioned the engraving and printing of twelve now-famous sketches of the Peninsular War campaigns of 1810-1811. He remained in the Portuguese Army until 1820 and then resumed his career in the British Army, being stationed in Gibraltar. The paper reveals that St. Clair was not only a brave officer and an inspiring commander, but also a competent commentator, an accomplished writer, and a distinguished artist. The quality and detail of his paintings, which are marked by the peculiarity of representing battles, sieges and actions where he was actually present, enable it to be said that he was the most remarkable contemporary artist of the Peninsular War, albeit virtually unrecognised.

In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries it was common for British Army regiments to recruit black males to serve as enlisted military musicians. In May 2023 another Black soldier of the 88th was identified: According to the ‘Edinburgh, Scotland, Army Attestation Registers, 1796-1857’ on ancestry.co.uk John Thomas “a Black”, and a labourer by occupation born in New York enlisted in the regiment at Edinburgh in May 1796. On enlistment he had a black complexion, black eyes, black hair, was 27 years of age and 5/7 and 1/2” tall.

RESUMEN: El objetivo de esta comunicación es presentar una visión sintética y contextualizada de la andadura americana de la Leal Legión Extremeña, un Regimiento creado por el escocés John Downie en el transcurso de la Guerra de la Independencia, pero que tras ella continuó prestando servicios en el Ejército Expedicionario que Pablo Morillo dirigió a Venezuela en 1815. No obstante, es en Perú donde desarrolló durante más tiempo su labor, en parte bajo la nueva denominación de Regimiento Imperial Alejandro, defendiendo la soberanía española de estos territorios, hasta su desaparición en la batalla de Ayacucho. Particular mención merece el capital humano de este Regimiento, del que formaron parte varios oficiales extremeños entre los que destacan José Sepúlveda, Diego Pacheco y Julián Olivares.

O autor pretende dar a conhecer botões das quatro
nações envolvidas no conflito – Portugal, Reino Unido,
Espanha e França –, apresentando e comparando diferentes
modelos, com características físicas e iconografias próprias.
É neste contexto de guerra total que, da simples função de
abotoar, o botão (tal como o uniforme em geral) adquire o
simbolismo identitário de uma arma ou regimento militar,
ou mesmo de uma nação.

Contribution to the study of military uniform
buttons during the Peninsular War that resulted
from the French invasions (1807-1814).
The author’s aim is to make known the buttons used
in the four nations involved in the conflict – Portugal,
United Kingdom, Spain and France –, by presenting and
comparing different models, with their own physical
characteristics and iconographies.
In this context of total war, buttons (as well as uniforms,
in general) were much more than their specific function;
they could symbolise the identity of a military branch,
a military regiment or even a nation.

El complejo fenómeno de la Guerra de la Independencia en la Península, así como sus circunstancias y repercusiones en el panorama social y político, han sido ampliamente analizados y discutidos casi desde el fin mismo de la contienda. La multitud de publicaciones que se han ocupado del tema y la abundante documentación de la época, tanto publicada como inédita, hacen que la información disponible sea ingente. Sin embargo, el análisis de la realidad material derivada de los acontecimientos bélicos no ha corrido la misma suerte.

The second half of the 18th century saw the formation of the first establishments to provide formal training to officers prior to receiving their first commission. The first school, the Royal Military Academy, was formed in 1741 by the Board of Ordnance to train Artillery and Engineer Officers. It was 1800 before the army formed a similar establishment and the building blocks were in place for the creation of the Scientific Soldier.
This thesis will look at the formation of the Royal Military Academy and look at the training that officers received with a focus on those officers destined to serve during the Peninsular War. The complementary roles and training of the Royal Military Artificers and the eventual formation of the School of Military Engineering will be described.
A thorough review will then be undertaken of the officers in the Royal Engineers, the numbers, their background, the locations they served in and the tasks they carried out.
A new review of the sieges during the war will be completed using unpublished material. The other roles undertaken by the Royal Engineers in the Peninsular War will be fully investigated and described. These roles are more comprehensive than has been commonly understood and will demonstrate the contribution of the educated officer to the war.
The thesis will conclude by looking at the impacts of the post-war peace on military education.

Em Julho de 1810, com o objetivo de expulsar os britânicos da Península, inicia-se a terceira invasão de Portugal por forças napoleónicas (1810-1811), pela região de Almeida. Depois de conquistarem a fortaleza, em Agosto, o “Exército de Portugal”, sob o comando de Masséna, avança pela margem direita do Mondego em direção a Coimbra. Em Setembro, é derrotado no Buçaco, mas contornando a serra por norte, continua a sua marcha sobre Lisboa, atingindo as linhas de Torres Vedras, a 10 de Outubro.
O Exército francês tendo passado mais de um mês na posição do Sobral, junto às linhas de Torres Vedras, passou a ocupar uma posição mais à retaguarda, a partir de Novembro, tendo a esquerda em Santarém, onde estava o II Corpo, e a direita em Rio Maior, onde estava o VIII Corpo. Ourém, Leiria, Tomar e Pombal estavam ocupados pelo VI e IX Corpos de Exército e pela reserva de cavalaria. O Quartel-general estava em Torres Novas. A Divisão Loison postou-se sobre o Zêzere.
Devido à falta de mantimentos e inexistência de reforços, na noite de 5 para 6 de Março de 1811, retirou-se o Exército das ditas posições, mostrando reunir-se em Tomar. Porém, o II Corpo seguiu a estrada do Espinhal, a Divisão Loison, a de Ansião, e o resto do Exército, a de Pombal. Na manhã de dia 6, o Exército Aliado, sob comando de Wellington, seguiu o Exército francês, dirigindo-se a Brigada Nightingall, pela estrada do Espinhal para observar os movimentos do II Corpo, e o resto do exército para Pombal. O Exército inimigo tomou posições em Pombal de 9 até 11; em Redinha até 12; em Condeixa, onde se reuniu a Divisão Loison, até à tarde de dia 13, e nesse mesmo dia retrocedeu para Casal Novo; em Casal Novo até 14; em Miranda do Corvo e rio Dueça, onde se lhe reuniu o II Corpo, passou a tomar nova posição sobre o rio Ceira; onde apareceu o exército inimigo todo formado no dia 15, com uma guarda avançada em frente de Foz de Arouce, a qual se conservou nesta posição até 15, à noite; na margem direita do Ceira até 16; sobre a direita do rio Alva, em Ponte de Mucela, até 18; desta posição retirou-se, com muita celeridade até Celorico da Beira, separando o II Corpo por Gouveia e pela estrada que passa através da serra em direção à cidade da Guarda. No dia 28 estava o exército reunido na Guarda, e conservou-se até 29, de onde retirou para o Sabugal, indo o VIII Corpo por Belmonte; no Sabugal conservou-se até 3 de Abril, e no dia 4 passou a fronteira e recolheu a Ciudad Rodrigo.
Durante a retirada a guarda de retaguarda foi garantida pelo VI Corpo, sob comando de Ney. Houve combates em Pombal (a 11 de Março), Redinha (a 12), Casal Novo (a 14), Foz de Arouce (a 15), Ponte de Mucela (a 18), Guarda (a 29) e Sabugal (a 3 de Abril).
As forças francesas passaram a fronteira espanhola no dia 4, em direção à segurança de Ciudad Rodrigo, terminando deste modo a terceira invasão francesa ao Reino de Portugal.

Os exércitos aliados, português e britânico, que participaram na designada Guerra Peninsular, entre 1809 e 1814, eram autónomos mas interdependentes, atingindo um nível de proficiência e trabalho em conjunto absolutamente ímpar até então. A unidade de comando, potenciada pela interoperabilidade ao nível de língua e terminologia militar, foi conseguida, por um lado, através da presença de oficiais portugueses no Quartel-General de Wellington e no Corpo de Guias do Exército Aliado, e, por outro, pela presença de oficiais britânicos no quartel-general de Beresford e nos diversos escalões tácticos do Exercito Português, Brigada e Regimento.

Westminster History Review 5. J.Barber and J.Sargent (eds.), (City of Westminster Archives Centre, London, 2007).
William Afflick was one of the 10th Hussars’ most decorated enlisted veterans of the Napoleonic Wars. He also happened to be black and born in St Kitts in the Caribbean. After service as a trumpeter in the Peninsular and Waterloo campaigns he settled with his family in Kensington, London, Middlesex. His son Charles was transported to Australia in the 1830s, and today there are hundreds, if not thousands of Australians, descended from Charles and his wife Ann, some of whom are not aware of William, their distinguished Afro-Caribbean ancestor.
A post-script containing additional research is also included.

The unfortunate Germans who were thrown into the mincing machine of Catalonia and, in particular, the worst-managed operations of the entire Peninsular War: the French sieges of Girona. This city became the grave of almost the entire German contingent and many others besides. Extracts from the diaries of participants in this grim fiasco give a totally chilling glimpse into the horrors of siege warfare.

This is contrasted with reports of the mobile raids by Spanish regiments supported by the Royal Navy on the eastern coast of Spain. These operations into the French lines of communications helped tie down thousands of French troops, who should have been conquering the remaining free areas of southern and eastern Spain.

The negative effects of Napoleon`s ill-founded operational dabbling in French military affairs in Spain from his ivory tower in Paris, hundreds of miles away from the reality on the ground is also examined.

The 11 colour plates by Bob Marion are based on Ludwig Scharf’s interpretations from on the spot sketches made in Spain during the period 1808 - 1814.In addition there are over 50 B&W illustrations of uniforms, flags and details, 7 maps, 12 OOBs and 6 Tables.

«Paz y capitulación» solicitó el general francés Verdier en agosto de 1808 cuando sitió a las tropas aragonesas en Zaragoza. «Guerra y cuchillo» fue la respuesta que recibió por parte de los defensores.

La historia convirtió a la ciudad y su defensa en un mito y ejemplo de resistencia frente al emperador Napoleón Bonaparte. Una población sin murallas, sin ejército, sin posibilidades militares, que asombró a toda Europa haciendo frente a varios ejércitos napoleónicos entre 1808 y 1809.

This article (as all my other articles on Clausewitz) isn’t a discussion “around” the thoughts of Clausewitz, which would be first based on Clausewitz – an attractive name! – in order to speak thereafter in a prospective manner, as we see quite often. My article is an analysis focussed on what Clausewitz actually wrote in his lectures on the “kleinen Krieg” [I would say here “small war” to be short, even if I don’t like this translation]. The aim is, first, making a synthesis of the thoughts of Clausewitz on the relations between the “kleinen Krieg” and insurrectional wars; and, second, explaining the context of that days which underlain his thoughts, in order to better understand them: the context related to 1) the wars on which Clausewitz bases his speech, 2) the military culture of the officers of that days (and also the military culture of Clausewitz) and 3) the reflection of his time on the “kleinen Krieg” and on insurrectional wars.

Indeed, Prussia's military defeats in 1806 led in this country to a reflection on national defence, on the question of armed citizens, and on the “petite guerre” as the appropriate tactic for popular uprisings. The lecture upon the “petite guerre” that Clausewitz delivered at the War College in Berlin between 1810 and 1812 is part of this framework. Moreover, the Revolutionary War, which was an insurrection against the British homeland, is one of the examples Clausewitz did choose to feed his thinking, just like the Wars of the Vendée and the Tyrolean events during the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars – which were other uprisings with insurrectional characteristics. In his lecture, Clausewitz doesn’t distinguish between the two words and the two realities of “petite guerre” and “guerrilla warfare”; however, he shows from time to time the particularities of the civil wars and of the wars with armed citizens. Our article studies the lecture on the “petite guerre” from Clausewitz with a new point of view, in order to point out the parts which are related to the popular wars and to the insurrections; indeed, as Raymond Aron expresses it, the thinking of Clausewitz has been built on watching how the extreme violence of passions could not be separated from people's wars.

Cet article (comme tous mes autres articles sur Clausewitz) n’est pas une discussion « autour » de la pensée de Clausewitz, qui partirait de Clausewitz – un nom porteur ! – pour parler de façon prospective, comme on le voit souvent. C’est une analyse centrée exclusivement sur ce que Clausewitz a écrit dans son "Cours sur la petite guerre". L’objectif est, premièrement, de saisir et de synthétiser la pensée de Clausewitz sur les rapports entre petite guerre et guerre insurrectionnelle ; et, deuxièmement, d’expliciter le contexte de l’époque qui a nourri cette réflexion, pour mieux la comprendre : le contexte concernant 1) les guerres sur lesquelles Clausewitz appuie son discours, 2) la culture militaire des officiers de ce temps (donc la sienne) et 3) la réflexion de son temps sur la petite guerre et la guerre insurrectionnelle.

Les défaites subies en 1806 engendrèrent en effet, en Prusse, une réflexion sur la défense nationale, sur l’armement du peuple, et sur la petite guerre comme tactique du peuple soulevé. Le « Cours sur la petite guerre » donné par Clausewitz à l’École supérieure de guerre de Berlin, entre 1810 et 1812, s’inscrit entres autres dans le fil de cette impulsion. Au reste, la guerre d’Indépendance américaine, insurrection contre la métropole anglaise, est au nombre des exemples choisis par Clausewitz pour alimenter sa réflexion, comme les guerres de Vendée et les épisodes tyroliens de la Révolution et de l’Empire, autres soulèvements à caractère insurrectionnel. Si Clausewitz n’opère pas pour ses auditeurs la distinction entre « petite guerre » et « guérilla », il pointe de temps à autre les particularismes des guerres civiles et des contextes guerriers avec armement du peuple. Cet article revisite le Cours sur la petite guerre de Clausewitz pour y relever la part redevable aux guerres populaires et aux insurrections, si tant est que, comme l’exprime Raymond Aron, la pensée de Clausewitz sur la guerre s’est construite en considérant le déchaînement des passions inhérent aux guerres populaires.

During its long history, Portugal has endured all types of war, including wars to maintain its independence. These wars at times were concentrated in one region and at others spread across the globe. The “First Portuguese Global War”, from 1640 to 1668, also called “Campaigns of the Restoration (or Acclamation – for independence)” in which Portugal fought for more than 28 years in Europe, Brazil, Africa and Asia, in a Herculean effort that guaranteed Portugal’s survival as an independent and sovereign nation.

As milícias e ordenanças em Portugal são uma história “de sucesso” difícil de comparar com outras estruturas existentes nos restantes países de então. E podemos acrescentar que nessa época, que o seu desempenho tem algo incrível, talvez quase único no Mundo.
Por ser difícil de comparar, muitos “historiadores” têm confundido estas unidades. Para uns a confusão levou-os a comparar com os Regimentos de Linha, ou seja, com as melhores unidades do Exército “permanente português” e do Exército aliado anglo-português, enquanto outros, confundiram com as guerrilhas e milícias populares.
Porque tivemos de tudo em Portugal durante a Guerra Peninsular, percebe-se a confusão. De facto, o esforço português durante esta época terrível, mobilizou e envolveu completamente toda a nação, como uma verdadeira nação em armas que teve de mobilizar centenas de milhares de homens, desde as forças projectadas para o ultramar, as forças permanentes em Portugal, as forças que fizeram parte do exército aliado anglo-português, as forças incluídas no Exército de Napoleão, as Milícias e Ordenanças e, ainda, as guerrilhas e as milícias populares.

La entrada del ejército francés en Castilla marcó un hito en la historia del valle del Duero, unidad territorial que se extendía desde los Picos de Urbión, en Soria, hasta su desembocadura en Oporto. La red hidrográfica del Duero, al extenderse por la mayor parte de la región de la meseta norte, afecta a la totalidad de las provincias de Segovia, Valladolid, Palencia y Zamora, y a una parte de las provincias de Burgos, Soria, León y Salamanca. Muchos afluentes, tanto de la vertiente meridional del Duero -el Duratón, Riaza, Cega, Eresma, Adaja, Trabancos, Tormes, Huebra y Agueda-como de la vertiente septentrional -Arlanzón, Arlanza, Pisuerga, Carrión, Valderaduey, Sequillo, Cea, Esla, Bernesga, Órbigo, Tera-fueron testigos de enfrentamientos, asaltos y escaramuzas a lo largo de toda la contienda.

On the 28th of October in 1811 it happened one of episodes more singular of Peninsular War in Extremaduran land: “Arroyo dos Molinos Surprise”. In spite of there isn’t much bibliography about this subject, the published one as late as today is known in a historic-military perspective that tends to praise its importance, both Spanish versions and English ones based on war reports.
In this work, we pretend to complement that vision with other sources, also near facts, but of local and private profile. They permit to approach courses up till now unpublished of the event. We follow the figure of Francisco Pérez Pavón Cabezudo and we present this new reading in the bicentenary of the famous battle.

El 28 de octubre de 1811 tuvo lugar uno de los episodios más singulares de la Guerra de la Independencia en suelo extremeño: “la Sorpresa de Arroyomolinos”. Pese a no ser mucha la bibliografía específicamente centrada en ella, la hasta hoy publicada insiste en tratarla desde una perspectiva histórico-militar que tiende a magnificar -tanto en las versiones españolas
como inglesas basadas en los partes de guerra- su trascendencia. En este estudio, se pretende complementar esa visión con la que nos aportan otras fuentes, también cercanas a los hechos, pero de perfil más local, civil o privado. Se trata, además, de materiales que permiten un acercamiento a derivadas hasta ahora inéditas del acontecimiento. Tomando como hilo conductor la figura de Francisco Pérez Pavón Cabezudo, ofrecemos esta nueva lectura en el bicentenario de la célebre batalla.

The Battle of Albuera (16 May 1811) was one of the most bloody and obstinate battles of the Peninsular War.
An allied British, Spanish and Portuguese corps, commanded by Marshal William Carr Beresford, engaged elements of the French Armée du Midi (Army of the South), commanded by Marshal Soult, at the small Spanish village of Albuera, about 20 kilometres (12 mi) south of the frontier fortress town of Badajoz, Spain.
The role of the Portuguese units was overshadowed by the bloodbath suffered by the British units and the consequences of the Spanish dispatch read in the Spanish Cortes implying that the British had played only a minor role in the battle, despite their much higher losses. Anglo-Spanish political relations suffered following the battle and Wellington placed most of the blame for the losses on Blake.

The very same Neostoicism that at the beginning of the XVIIth century helped —as Domínguez Manzano states— “to build an autonomous moral system, justifiable on its own and independent from external doctrinaire impositions, but at the same time compatible with the main Christian dogmas”, became the basis of Goya´s personal and collective philosophical proposal when Europe, and especially Spain, was once more burning in war.  It was therefore the time to support the natural right, the individualism and the reasoning  —consubstantial to the human condition— against the uneducated barbarism or the prevailing absolutist dogmas. By offering this Stoic solution, Goya is not turning anachronistically to a moral from the past, but to an up-to-date one. In fact this moral will become an essential source for the development of the liberal ideology, which will reach its peak since the disastrous consequences of the Napoleonic wars. Manoel Ignácio Martins Pamplona Corte Real (1760-1832), foi agraciado com o título francês de Baron de Pamplona (1817) por Luís XVIII e com o título de Conde de Subserra (1823) por D. João VI. Natural de Angra de Heroísmo, originário de uma família da nobreza açoriana com raízes nos primeiros povoadores, foi estudante em Coimbra, bacharel em matemática.
Oficial de cavalaria do exército português, voluntário no exército russo, no reinado de Catarina II, participou na campanha da Crimeia contra os Turcos (1787-1791), integrou o exército do Duque de York na luta contra a França Revolucionária, participando na tomada da cidade francesa de Valenciennes (1793). De regresso ao Exército Português participou na Campanha do Rossilhão, mais uma vez contra a França Revolucionária (1793-1795), e na Legião Portuguesa, combateu sob a bandeira de Napoleão, com presença nas campanhas em Portugal, Áustria, Polónia e Rússia.
Autor e tradutor de publicações sobre a Guerra Peninsular, foi também redator da publicação Contemporâneo Político e Literário, Paris (1820).
Com carreira política de relevo. Foi deputado pelos Açores em 1821-1822 às Cortes Constituintes Vintistas. Ministro da guerra em 1821. Cargo que volta a exercer, em acumulação com a pasta da marinha de 1823 a 1825, acumulando ainda as funções de Ministro Assistente ao Despacho (equivalente a Primeiro-Ministro de Portugal) de D. João VI. Foi ainda embaixador em Madrid entre 1825 e 1827.
Cidadão português, afrancesado, naturalizado francês (1818), reputado de maçon e liberal na literatura contemporânea. Foi condenado à morte em Portugal por alta traição (1810) e amnistiado pelas Cortes (1821). Preso por ordem de D. Miguel (1828-1832) morreu na prisão do Forte da Graça, em Elvas (1832).
Militar, político, escritor, jornalista. Personalidade controversa e contraditória, da qual existem registos biográficos parciais e incorretos, e sobre a qual se pretende trazer à luz nesta comunicação novos contributos para o seu conhecimento, principalmente como figura, ou não, do liberalismo.

Façamos ideia do lastimoso estado em que ficou Leiria depois da retirada de l’Armée du Portugal sob o comando de Masséna. Imaginemos uma terra ocupada seis longos meses por estrangeiros inimigos, sedentos de vingança, fugindo raivosos pelo desengano e pela fome, depois de uma terceira expedição malograda, como escreve Silva Araújo no seu livro sobre bispo de Leiria, D. Manuel d’Aguiar. O comércio interrompido, o culto abandonado, os edifícios e os templos devorados pelas chamas, enfim por toda a parte ruínas. E para cúmulo… a peste encarregando-se de completar o que a guerra por acaso, deixara escapar.
Do paço episcopal, do recolhimento de Santo Estêvão, do Seminário, e do convento das religiosas de Sant’Ána, apenas os muros existiam, mas estalados e enegrecidos pelo fumo. O hospital e a Sé catedral, nomeadamente a sua bela sacristia, destruídos. Enfim, podemos dizer que das terras de Portugal, Leiria foi a que mais sofreu com a invasão francesa comandada por Masséna, tendo a grande maioria das destruições tido lugar em finais de Fevereiro e início de Março de 1811, quando da retirada da Armée du Portugal .
A comunicação, apresenta, de forma quantificada, os prejuízos causados em Leiria, pelo exército de Massena quando da sua partida em 1811, nas cerca de 1000 habitações desta pequena cidade de quase 4000 habitantes, baseando-se nos registos do livro das Décimas Provinciais e na “Conta “ elaborada pela comissão encarregada de distribuir o donativo votado pelo Parlamento do Reino Unido e da Grã-Bretanha e Irlanda. Aproveita-se o ensejo de alargar o relato das destruições a povoações do distrito.
