Motions

The evaluation of Game User Experience is an
emergent and important field in game and HCI research
due to its direct impact on the multi-billion dollar
interactive entertainment industry. Special attention
has been given to the shooter genre. This paper
focuses on evaluation of sports games. In particular, it
presents an ongoing project that aims to assess the
utility of triangulating several quantitative methods,
including eye-tracking, psycho-physiological data and
game telemetry. This research is an on-going
collaboration between Simon Fraser University and
Electronic Arts. Results of research including the
triangulation of this data for the evaluation of the NBA
Live 10 title and evaluation of these methods by EA’s
production team will be discussed.

Dedicating a book to Feelings of Being Alive we find ourselves in the position of this existential cat, asking questions of what makes our experience of the world a lively one – or even an experience of life – and what might be the experience of ‘being alive’. It could be that these feelings are something we only experience in passing, as an ability to carry out an ongoing experiential process of registering changes in ones mind, body or the world we engage in. Kant, in his Anthropology, famously characterized the experience of life in such a way as an act of movement/motion of the mind [Bewegungshandlung des Gemüts]: “To feel life, to feel pleasure is nothing else than to constantly feel that one is being driven on to leave one’s current state for another one”. Like pleasure, the feeling of being alive might be a state that cannot rest in itself, that would cease to be if consciousness just remained focussed on one object. In being characterized thus it might not be a state in the narrow sense at all. (...)

Measurements of the inertia parameters of a keelboat hull using a bifilar suspension are described. Bifilar yaw moment measurement normally entails accurate measurement of the length l and spacing 2d of the suspension, and of Ty the period of pure yaw oscillation. The primary difficulty with a bifilar suspension is avoiding unwanted modes of oscillation, specifically sway when measuring yaw. However, for an athwartships suspension the sway motion is that of a simple pendulum of period Ts and observation of the combined motion allows the yaw gyradius  to be determined as ky = (Ty/Ts)d. Thus only the ratio of the periods and the suspension spacing need be measured.
Measurements of the normal mode periods of the double pendulum motion when the hull is displaced in surge allows the pitch gyradius and the height of the center of mass to be determined.
Repeating yaw measurements with the hull tilted, and then with the bifilar suspension fore and aft allows all the elements of the inertia tensor of a symmetrical hull to be measured.

This paper considers the theory of the Universal Audience as a better check on setting fair and interesting debate motions than the checks used in the status quo. Attention is paid to the theory of the Universal Audience both in the rhetorical tradition and how this theory might be applied to those working in contemporary British Parliamentary debating.

The combination of psychophysiological and psychometric methods provides reliable measurements of affective user experience (UX). Understanding the nature of affective UX in interactive entertainment, especially with a focus on sonic stimuli, is an ongoing research challenge. In the empirical study reported here, participants played a fast-paced, immersive first-person shooter (FPS) game modification, in which sound (on/off) and music (on/off) were manipulated, while psychophysiological recordings of electrodermal activity (EDA) and facial muscle activity (EMG) were recorded in addition to a Game Experience Questionnaire (GEQ). Results indicate no main or interaction effects of sound or music on EMG and EDA. However, a significant main effect of sound on all GEQ dimensions (immersion, tension, competence, flow, negative affect, positive affect, and challenge) was found. In addition, an interaction effect of sound and music on GEQ dimension tension and flow indicates an important relationship of sound and music for gameplay experience. Additionally, we report the results of a correlation between GEQ dimensions and EMG/EDA activity. We conclude subjective measures could advance our understanding of sonic UX in digital games, while affective tonic (i.e., long-term psychophysiological) measures of sonic UX in digital games did not yield statistically significant results. One approach for future affective psychophysiological measures of sonic UX could be experiments investigating phasic (i.e., event-related) psychophysiological measures of sonic gameplay elements in digital games. This could improve our general understanding of sonic UX beyond affective gaming evaluation.

The principles to use variables and mathematical methodologies in physics are addressed. A set of refined definitions with designated variables are used to derive the Velocity and Acceleration Theories in Distance Field and Vector Space. Mathematical methodologies such as Linear Algebra and Vector Calculus are used systematically in a step by step derivation process. The proof of the theories can be easily achieved by substitution of the designated variables with a set of parameters that matches the same assumptions and conditions in every step of the derivation process.

Therefore, the basic forms of any motion are approaching (attraction) or distancing (repulsion) of particles. The sum of all attractive motions is always equal to the sum of all repulsive ones because while the motion of individual particles tends towards equilibrium (a lower form of motion, attraction), the total movement of the newly formed particle abolishes balance (higher form of motion, repulsion). Based on three criteria for gradation of motion to lower and higher (structural-genetic, spatial and repulsion-attraction), the paper discusses the basic concepts in physical chemistry: the formation of atoms and molecules; intermolecular effects; phase state of one-component systems; the motion of molecules in gases; transfer of motion from one body to another; basic thermodynamic concepts; gas pressure; entropy as a measure of transition from lower to higher form of motion...

The evaluative conditioning (EC) effect refers to change in the liking of a stimulus (conditioned stimulus, CS) due to the fact that the stimulus has been paired with an affective stimulus (unconditioned stimulus, US). Most studies use a picture-picture paradigm in which static visual stimuli are used as CSs and USs. Because stimuli in the environment are most often encountered in motion, we investigated the impact of motion on the likeability of a stimulus. In this experiment, pictures of consumption products (CSs) were presented in motion patterns known to elicit positive, neutral or negative affective responses. Subsequent to this pairing, a significant preference for CSs paired with the positive motion was observed. This experiment introduces a new method to induce changes in liking, called the picture-motion paradigm, and shows that motion can be used as an affective stimulus in EC. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

An outlook on the recently proposed quasi-steady quasi-homogeneous (QSQH) theory of the effect of large-scale structures on the near-wall turbulence is provided. The paper focuses on the selection of the filter, which defines the large-scale structures. It gives a brief overview of the QSQH theory, discusses the filter needed to distinguish between large and small scales, and the related issues of the accuracy of the QSQH theory, describes the probe needed for using the QSQH theory, and outlines the procedure of extrapolating the characteristics of near-wall turbulence from medium to high Reynolds numbers.

Descripción de los movimientos infinitesimales en trayectorias continuas diferenciables Abstract—Utilizando cálculo vectorial y aplicando el teorema de Schwarz de continuidad en R 3 , se logra una función que esta compuesta por dos funciones: una espacial y otra temporal independientes entre ellas, salvo por el tiempo, en ambas se consigue diferenciación de funciones vectoriales y escalares. La descomposición anterior, se aplica en este caso como ejemplo la Segunda Ley de Newton, por ser más fácil de trabajar, pudiendo aplicarse a cualquier otra formula de la física o matemática, ya que si bien se deriva con respecto al tiempo, podría ser otra variable. Las leyes de Newton no cambian, sino que introduce el concepto de movimientos en trayectorias infinitesimales.

Although demonstrations are a recurring and key feature of Canadian and other societies, law often has negative and unacknowledged larger impacts on demonstrations while they occur when one examines how courts and police practically use and apply law on the ground. By pragmatically analyzing the experiences in Canada of Ipperwash, the Toronto G20, the Occupy movement, and “Idle No More”, this article illustrates patterns of how injunctions and criminal law processes negatively interacted with those demonstrations while they happened. The article begins by reviewing law’s usually detrimental impact on demonstrations-in-progress in the context of interlocutory and statutory injunctions (unless rare circumstances arise). For example, given the prior status quo focus of such injunctions, demonstrators have an uphill battle to practically win such motions. As well, using Hohfeldian conceptions, specific “rights” (such as property rights or regulated property use) usually prevail over more general aspirational “privileges” (such as freedom of expression and freedom of peaceful assembly) when they come into conflict. Law also does not usually act in prospective (or ex ante) manner for specific future or current situations. The article then examines how the police can use criminal powers and processes to effectively shut down or undermine demonstrations in the heat of the moment, notably because any after-the-fact (or ex post) reviews or accountability for misuse come much later, if at all. Finally, the conclusion explores some practical implications as a result and potential mitigation methods, such as more pragmatic understanding and balancing, better articulating some of the specific rights associated with demonstrations and dissent, and implementing more holistic and nuanced solutions, including trying to practically minimize and avoid raising tensions in such situations.
