Maritime History and Heritage

Le unità navali che costituiscono il “patrimonio galleggiante” di un paese, testimonianza tangibile della sua storia sul mare, si possono suddividere in tre categorie: da guerra, da lavoro e da diporto.
Fino agli anni Cinquanta del Novecento le iniziative di conservazione di questo patrimonio erano rivolte quasi esclusivamente alle unità militari: si trattava (e si tratta) di scafi che rappresentano dei “monumenti dell’orgoglio nazionale”. Non a caso, il primo esempio risale agli anni Trenta dell’Ottocento e riguarda la fregata USS Constitution, varata nel 1797, che nei suoi scontri con similari unità britanniche durante la guerra del 1812-15 costituì per l’opinione pubblica statunitense l’unico motivo di vanto di una campagna militare che fu, per altri versi, confusa e inconcludente. Il valore simbolico attribuito a questa nave fa sì che ancor oggi sia mantenuta in servizio. Del medesimo status di monumento nazionale gode l’HMS Victory, che ricorda la battaglia di Trafalgar, l’ammiraglio Nelson e il “Britannia rules the seas”. Per quanto riguarda l’Europa, le maggiori unità militari del Novecento, sfuggite alla fiamma ossidrica, sono rappresentate da tre incrociatori: l’Aurora ancorato a San Pietroburgo, il Giorgios Averoff vicino al Pireo e l’HMS Belfast a Londra.

This article presents the reconstruction of the paddle steamer Eric  Nordevall that took place between 1995 and 2012 in Forsvik, Sweden. The original steamer was built in 1836 and was specifically designed for traffic the Gota Canal, the mid-Swedish waterway inaugurated in 1832 between Lake Vanern and the east coast. The reconstruction project aimed to produce a design as close as possible to the original, thus representing a historical-intensive research project including the revival of craft skills, such as model carpentry and riveting of pressure chambers. The project has also been important for empowering a local — former industrial — community situated in region with depopulation and loss of employment opportunities. In addition, this article describes the original vessel and her context, which provides an example of the British influence in the early 19th-century industrialisation in Sweden.

This paper examines the dilemmas, obligations and opportunities faced by heritage professionals in elaborating cultural ‘assets’ among the breadwinning practices of contemporary, artisanal communities. It takes as its case study the authors’ Bahari Yetu, Urithi Wetu (‘Our Ocean, Our Heritage’) project and its engagement with maritime practitioners in and around the town of Bagamoyo, Tanzania. The article identifies Bagamoyo’s contemporary maritime scene as meriting heritage recognition on a global level, yet sitting entirely outside the country’s legal and political conception of heritage. Moreover, it acknowledges that ‘heritage’ as founded on the livelihood‐earning activities of the community’s practitioners, such as boatbuilders, fishers and mariners. These often operate at subsistence level, yet are subject to transformative economic, social and environmental forces, as well as government agencies with no heritage remit. Drawing upon and reporting their co‐creative engagements and activities with the Bagamoyo community, the authors argue for a non‐reifying and people‐centred approach to ‘living’ heritage situations such as that of maritime Bagamoyo, in which the tools of heritage engagement are deployed to amplify the concerns of the practitioner community to a wider audience.

Se muestra la pieza La Bella Lola, como habanera intrínseca, patrimonial de los marinos mercantes de México y Latinoamérica. La Bella Lola es patrimonio cultural marítimo de muchos puertos, entre ellos el Puerto de Ensenada, Baja California. Se publicó en el periódico El Vigía, en noviembre de 2015.

In Norvegia il termine "cultura costiera" non ha lo stesso significato che assume in molti altri paesi. Qui la grande maggioranza della popolazione ha sempre vissuto lungo le coste, un fatto che ha esercitato una straordinaria influenza sulla vita nazionale. In occasione della celebrazione dei 200 anni dalla promulgazione della Costituzione, Oslo ha ospitato una festa del mare dedicata alla "Kystkultur"

History and architectural features are considered for the two lighthouses built on the island of Sálvora, Galicia (1853 and 1921). Some months before the unveiling of the second lighthouse, on January 2, 1921, just in front of the island took place the wreck of the ocean liner Santa Isabel.
