Ari Folman’ ın yapımcı-yönetmen-yazar ve oyuncusu olduğu Waltz With Bashir (2008) filmi, ana karakter Folman’ ın Lübnan İç Savaşı’nda (1982) yaşadıklarını hatırlama çabasını konu etmektedir. Film, Folman’ ın ve arkadaşlarının yaşadığı psikolojik bunalımlara odaklanmaktadır. Film, sözlü tarih, canlandırma/drama ve belgesel sinemayı animasyon olarak sunmaktadır. Filmde, bireysel hafızanın yeniden inşası, kolektif bir çaba sonucunda gerçekleştirilmektedir. Rüyalar, itiraflar, anlatılamayanlar hafızanın yaşananlara karşı direnişini göstermektedir.
Filmin anlatısında bireysel travmalara odaklanıldığından çalışma, savaşa ilişkin yer verilmeyen ya da doğrudan anlatılmayan yönleri ortaya çıkarmayı amaçlamaktadır. Bu amaçla, savaşın yıkımı ve yaşanılan toplumsal buhrana ne derecede yer verildiği değerlendirilecektir. Böylelikle çalışma, filmde Lübnan İç Savaşı’nın gizlenmiş, yok sayılmış ve ön plana çıkarılmış yanlarına dikkat çekecektir. Aynı zamanda filmde gerçeğin yeniden inşasına hangi yönde şekil verildiği tartışılacaktır.
Çalışmada farklı eleştirel yaklaşımlarla filmin içeriği okunmaya çalışılmıştır. Filme ait kültürel kimliği yansıtmada sosyolojik eleştiri yaklaşımı tercih edilmiştir. Gizlenmiş olan düşünceyi açığa çıkarmada ideolojik eleştiri ve geçmişi yeniden şekillendirme çabasını ortaya koymada tarihsel eleştiri yaklaşımı kullanılmıştır. Gizlenen anlatımların elemanlarını saptamada ise göstergebilimsel eleştiri yaklaşımlarından faydalanılmıştır.

La centralità del Libano cristiano

La salvaguardia della cristianità orientale è probabilmente la partita geopolitica più importante che la diplomazia vaticana è stata chiamata a giocare nell’ultimo cinquantennio. In tale contesto la questione libanese ha rappresentato, assieme all’irrisolto problema dello status giuridico di Gerusalemme, la maggiore criticità da affrontare. Le due fattispecie sono evidentemente legate fra loro, trovando comune origine (non solo nella percezione vaticana), nella “questione palestinese”, prima ed inesauribile fonte di conflittualità per l’intera area mediorientale.
Il Medio Oriente è la culla della cristianità e, se è vero che essa ha poi visto spostare il proprio baricentro, negli anni dello sviluppo e dell’affermazione, verso occidente, rimane il fatto che in oriente, oltre ai Luoghi Santi, permane una cospicua presenza di cristiani (latini e orientali), presenza da salvaguardare a tutti i costi. L’instabilità e la conflittualità dei “Luoghi Santi” sta, ormai da decenni, alimentando la diaspora cristiana dal medioriente. La perdita totale di una significativa, seppur minoritaria, presenza di cristiani in Medio Oriente, finirebbe per tagliare le basi teologiche, originarie e culturali su cui poggia la Chiesa di Cristo.
In tale contesto appare evidente la centralità del Libano, l’unica regione del Medio Oriente in cui la presenza cristiana, incarnata in particolar modo nella componente maronita, ma anche nelle altre componenti melchite, copte, siro-ortodosse e armene, è titolare di un ruolo istituzionalizzato al punto di non conoscere l’istituto del dhimmi  . Il Libano, nei fatti, rappresenta l’unica compatta enclave cristiana in un panorama che, fatta eccezione per lo Stato di Israele, è completamente islamico.

Le premesse della ricerca

I quindici anni del conflitto libanese hanno visto la Santa Sede duramente impegnata nel relazionarsi continuamente fra i fragili equilibri libanesi; il Santo Padre Giovanni Paolo II, in numerose occasioni, è intervenuto per denunciare la mattanza in atto, arrivando persino ad indicare nella Siria uno dei mandanti del dramma in atto. Durante il conflitto si sono contati oltre centocinquanta pronunciamenti del pontefice dettati dal tentativo di disinnescare lo scontro dettato dai tre antagonismi tra loro connessi:
 l’antagonismo tra gruppi cristiani, alimentato dal tentativo egemonizzante del partito di destra Kataeb;
 l’antagonismo cristiano-musulmano, dovuto alla non volontà dei primi di ridiscutere gli equilibri costituzionali confermati dal Patto Nazionale del 1943;
 l’antagonismo tra libanesi e palestinesi, dovuto alla perdita della piena sovranità nazionale libanese causata dalla presenza di combattenti palestinesi in armi sul suolo libanese  e dalle mire siriane sul Paese dei cedri.


A complicare ulteriormente lo scenario sono intervenute più volte frizioni con il clero maronita, ed in particolare misura con gli ordini monastici libanesi, storicamente nazionalisti e su posizioni distanti rispetto a quelle assunte dalla diplomazia vaticana in relazione alla “questione palestinese”. Il clero maronita, in più di una occasione, ha rappresentato l’elemento di maggiore opposizione a quei principi conciliari, accusati di sacrificare i cristiani del Libano sull’altare del dialogo islamo-cristiano.

L’obiettivo della ricerca

La presente ricerca, ha quindi analizzato la capacità mediatrice della diplomazia vaticana rispetto a tali elementi di frizione e, si è prefissa il compito di giudicarne i risultati ottenuti ai fini della composizione del conflitto intercristiano in particolare e, del raggiungimento di una stabilizzazione regionale più in generale.

Le fonti utilizzate

Uno studio che riguardi la politica estera di una nazione dovrebbe necessariamente contemplare l’accesso diretto a documenti ufficiali, classificati e non, prodotti dalla “diplomazia” del  Paese oggetto della ricerca. Nel caso di una nazione “particolare” quale è il  Vaticano, questo non è sempre stato  possibile.
Lo studio che va a compiersi ha quindi privilegiato quattro tipi di fonti:

Vista la complessità del tema trattato, si è preferito accompagnare la presente ricerca con una dettagliata cronologia degli eventi che hanno riguardato il Libano dal 1861 sino alla fine della guerra civile, strumento necessario al fine di periodizzare e contestualizzare gli eventi oggetto dell’analisi.

La recherche prend pour cas d'étude la ville de Beyrouth. Elle a pour but de traiter les multiples représentations subjectives de la ville et de son espace public, questionner comment ces imaginaires se traduisent en différentes formes de pratiques urbaines et sociales, et de révéler les rôles et les limites de la mobilité informelle dans la construction de l'identité urbaine et dans la relation de l'individu au territoire. La question qui anime cette enquête est celle de la capacité de la mobilité à régénérer l'espace public dans le contexte d'une urbanité fragmentée.

The research takes as a case study the city of Beirut, addressing the multiple subjective representations of the city and of its public space, questioning how these imaginaries translate into different forms of urban and social practice, and shedding light on the roles and limits of informal mobility in shaping the relationship to the territory. The underlying question behind these investigations is whether and how mobility can (re-) generate public space in the context of a fragmented urbanity.

Modern romanı geleneksel romandan ayıran başlıca özelliklerden birisi de monolog, bilinç akışı, leitmotiv ve metinler arasılık gibi yeni anlatım tekniklerini kullanmasıdır. Bu teknikler modern romanın yapısını oluşturan zaman, karakterler ve olay örgüsü gibi biçimsel unsurlarda meydana gelen yeni yaklaşımlarla ilgilidir. Eserde hangi anlatım tekniğinin kullanılacağı çoğu kez romanın biçimi ve içeriği ile ilişkilidir. Bu araştırma geçen yüzyıl Arap romanları içerisinde modern ve post modern anlatım tekniklerini kullanan Kevâbîsu Beyrût romanını eserin içeriği bağlamında ele alacak ve kullanılan tekniklerin eserin amacına uygunluğunu ortaya koyacaktır. Otobiyografik olma özelliğine sahip olan romanın yazarı, bir iç savaşın sarsıntılarını birçok açıdan tecrübe etmiş ve çatışmaların ortasında kalmış biri olarak duygularını aktarmaya çalışmıştır. Anlatımında ön plana çıkan teknikler öykünün içeriği ile uyumlu oluşu esere estetik değer katmış ve ünlü Arap romanları arasına girmiştir. Çalışmanın giriş kısmı, Lübnan’da 1975-1990 yılları arasında meydana gelen iç savaşa zemin hazırlayan etkenleri, birinci bölüm, eserin yazarı Gâde es-Semmân’ın hayatını, üçüncü bölüm ise; Kevâbîsu Beyrût adlı romanın anlatım tekniklerini eserin yazılmasına neden olan etkenlerle ilişkisini araştıracaktır.

One of the main features that distinguish modern novel from traditional one is the use of new narrative techniques such as monologue, flow of consciousness, leitmotiv and intertextuality. These techniques relate to new approaches that take shape in formal elements such as time, characters and event patterns that make up the modern novel. Which expression technique is used in the work is often related to the form and content of the novel. This research examines the Kevâbîsu Beyrût, which uses modern and post modern expression techniques in the Arab novels of the last century, in the context of the content of the work and reveals the appropriateness of the techniques used for the purpose of the work. The authors of the novel, autobiographical, tried to convey the feelings of a civil war in many ways, and remained in the midst of conflicts. The techniques that came to the forefront in his narration have added aesthetic value to the composition of the narration and it has become one of the famous Arab novels. The introduction part of the work consists of the factors that prepared the ground for the civil war that took place in Lebanon between 1975 and 1990, the first chapter, the work of writer Gâde esSemman, the third chapter; Kevâbîsu will investigate the relation between the narrative techniques of the novel Beirut and the factors leading to the writing of the work.

Syria and Lebanon used to be one territory before the first world war. After the war, the territory was split and the two countries took two different directions and paths in history. From 1975 till 1990, Lebanon suffered from a gruesome civil war which ended by the Taif agreement. In this paper we attempt to extract some lessons from the Lebanese civil war that can be applied to Syria's war which has been ongoing since 2011.

El Estado de la República del Líbano presenta una serie de características que lo hacen único, no sólo en la región de Medio Oriente, sino también en el resto del mundo. Desde sus orígenes, en el que dicho territorio estuvo habitado por los fenicios hasta la actualidad, pasando por la conquista árabe, el período en el que estuvo bajo dominación del Imperio Otomano y la presencia francesa; se han ido produciendo una serie de procesos socio-históricos que le han otorgado su singularidad. De la misma manera, el funcionamiento de la democracia en este país posee ciertas diferencias con el resto de los países que lo rodean, ya sean sus vecinos Israel y Siria, como así también aquellos que conforman la región en la que se encuentra enclavado el " país de los cedros " .

מלחמת שלום הגליל היא אחת המלחמות השנויות במחלוקת בחברה הישראלית. הנרטיב הרווח קובע ששר הביטחון אריאל שרון הונה את ראש הממשלה מנחם בגין ואת הממשלה כולה. מנחם בגין והממשלה אישרו פעולה מצומצמת שנועדה להרחיק את הארגונים הפלסטיניים כארבעים קילומטר מן הגבול, אך לשר הביטחון היו תכניות אחרות אשר נועדו להנהיג סדר חדש בארץ הארזים. בלי לנסות ולהצדיק את מעשיו של שרון או לזַכּוֹת אותו על מהלכיו במלחמה, נרטיב זה עושה עוול לראש הממשלה דאז מנחם בגין. הוא מעניק משקל רב לשרון ודוחק את בגין אל קרן זווית כשחקן שולי. אך לבגין היה תפקיד גדול ומשמעותי יותר. במאמר זה אני מבקש לטעון כי מבחינת המדיניות הלבנונית של מנחם בגין, מלחמת שלום הגליל הייתה ידועה מראש. הטענה המרכזית במאמר זה היא שמרגע שמנחם בגין עלה לשלטון ב=1977 החלה מעין ספירה לאחור לפעולה נרחבת ומקיפה בלבנון. תחת מנהיגותו של בגין התערבה ישראל בנעשה בלבנון יותר ויותר, מדרום המדינה ועד מרכזה. המעשים, ההחלטות וההצהרות של בגין וממשלותיו בשנים שקדמו למלחמת שלום הגליל סללו את הדרך למלחמה.
The Peace for Galilee War which began in 1982 is one of the most controversial events in Israeli history. The prevailing narrative states that it was a war of deception, in which Defense Minister Ariel Sharon misled Prime Minister Menachem Begin and the rest of the government. While Begin and the government approved a small-scale operation that was meant to push the Palestinian organizations to 40 kilometers north of the Israeli border, Sharon had more grandiose plans aimed at creating a new order in Lebanon. Without trying to vindicate Sharon for his actions during the war, this narrative attributes Begin with far too small a role.
This article claims that as part of Begin’s Lebanese policy, the Peace for Galilee War was conceptualized well in advance. It will show that from the moment Begin became prime minister in 1977, a countdown began toward a full-scale operation in Lebanon. Under Begin’s leadership, Israel’s involvement in Lebanon increased from year to year. The culmination was the Peace for Galilee War.

Alors que la guerre fait encore rage en Syrie et que les sociétés de la rive sud de la Méditerranée hésitent entre protestation ouverte et crainte de la violence d'État, il importe de saisir la place qu'occupent les morts de guerre dans ces pays du Proche et du Moyen-Orient, où ils paraissent si intimement liés à la culture politique. Research and Dissertation completed for a Post Graduate program at The University of Cambridge's Institute for Sustainability Leadership ( CISL ).  Lebanon made a commitment at the United Nation's COP meeting to supply 12% of the country's power through renewable energy sources.

Lebanon is a small Mediterranean country, which has struggled to recover from a long civil war. In 2009, the nation made a commitment at COP 15 in Copenhagen to provide 12% of the power production through renewable energy sources. The commitment, although noble, presented a long-term challenge to a country which was still struggling with the day-to-day responsibility of providing 24hr electricity.

The challenge would require the resources and skills of the private sector coupled with the authority, public service identity, and vision of the public sector. This research was carried out almost four years after the COP 15 commitment was made. Using literature and interviews with key stakeholders in Lebanon’s renewable energy plans, the aim was to identify how far the public sector has come to forming an effective partnership with the private sector. Using defining elements of a partnership and the level of private sector engagement, the research gauged the potential effectiveness of a partnership to produce renewable energy.

The findings exposed a public sector which is incapable of upholding an effective partnership and a disengaged private sector driven by the realization of profits. Both sectors understand their personal responsibility to bring about positive social change, but have lost trust in the other’s intentions to do so.

Taking a step back, the power sector was analyzed as one entity working within the context of a failed state unable to recover since the civil war. The intent of both parties to protect the public from a failed state presents a unifying front to build the mutuality towards achieving a common commitment.

Lebanon’s gradual progress towards a full recovery from the war will be drawn out. Although a partnership is not recommended at this stage of recovery, a municipality-level approach to producing renewable energy may provide the incremental steps towards renewable energy targets and unity among stakeholders.

The author examines the limitations and potential in the "Arabization" of the playwriting process through an exploration of the Lebanese Civil War and the inheritance (or erasure) of intergenerational memory.  Through a series of studio and written explorations, the author investigates conventional play-writing techniques and questions the capacity to de-center the locus of knowledge from a European lens.  The two-year exploration culminated in the play "The Green Line," which in and of itself is a discussion of transmigration and racial/ethnic building identity politics. The author interrogates the effectiveness of the "Arabization" endeavor and discusses findings that point to the potential ways the exploration failed and succeeded.
