Jesuit school drama in the 18th century

This review of scholarship on Jesuit humanistic literature and theater is Latin-oriented because the Society's sixteenth-century code of studies, the Ratio Studiorum, in force for nearly two centuries, enjoined the study and imitation in Latin of the best classical authors. Notwithstanding this well-known fact, co-ordinated modern scholarship on the Latin poetry, poetics, and drama of the Old Society is patchy. We begin with questions of sources, reception, and style. Then recent work on epic, didactic, and dramatic poetry is considered, and finally, on a handful of "minor" genres. Some genres and regions are well studied (drama in the German-speaking lands), others less so. There is a general scarcity of bilingual editions and commentaries of many "classic" Jesuit authors which would, in the first instance, bring them to the attention of mainstream modern philologists and literary historians, and, in the longer term, provide a firmer basis for more synoptic and synthetic studies of Jesuit intertextuality and style(s). Along with the interest and value of this poetry as world literature, I suspect that the extent to which the Jesuits' Latin labors in the vineyard of the classroom formed the hearts and minds of their pupils, including those who went on to become Jesuits, is underestimated.

Kako bi se što sustavnije izveli zaključci o izabranim tekstovima, kao i njihova međusobna usporedba, u prvom će se poglavlju obraditi Tucciov životopis, informacije o njegovim rukopisima i tiskanoj verziji te, kako je najavljeno, žanr i fabula drame sa značajnim dramaturškim karakteristikama. Sljedeće će poglavlje na isti način dati pregled Betondićeva života, rukopisa njegova prijevoda, te kompozicijskih i dramaturških značajki uz usporedbu s latinskim izvornikom. Na koncu slijedi prijepis Betondićeva prijevoda iz autografa.

This thesis analyzes the reception of the Japanese mission in Europe, from the 16th to the 18th century. The discourse diffused in Europe started with a certain triumphalism, embodied by the Japanese Christians sent to Rome in 1585. However, when the local authorities began to prosecute and ban the new religion, it evolved to an imagery centered on the concept of “martyr". After that, this notion has been actively used to relate the Japanese Christian experience in modern Europe, and it was intimately linked to the religious and political thought of the time. The martyrs of Japan also gave, in 1627, the first beatification of saints from the “Indies”. This exceptional event, for both the Catholic church and the Iberian colonial empires, was only made possible by the integration of Japan in a determined word-view, where its leaders were regarded as tyrants, and not as uncivilized savages. The concrete transmission of such conceptions in the Old Continent was conducted by various means, such as paintings, sculptures and engravings, or literature, and theater. In the Jesuit plays, the Japanese martyrs became a topic in a literary genre essentially designed for public edification. All of this gave birth to an imaginary Japan that subsequently established itself in the minds of the time. Overall, this thesis shows that Japanese martyrs cannot simply be confined to the history of the Church or missionary orders. They have contributed significantly to the construction of European culture, particularly in its perception of its place in the world.

Jesuit drama constituted a substantial part of Neolatin drama and as such it is widely discussed in professional literature. The subject of this study are not Jesuit plays as such, but only their secondary parts, that means prologues, choruses, interludes and epilogues. It is based on practically unknown type of materials, namely the set of about 300 complete texts of school plays from Bohemian Lands. These plays, written by Jesuit teachers for their students, represent the most numerous type of Jesuit drama. However, since these texts were not meant to be printed, we nowadays know mostly only their titles and synopses. All the more valuable is thus the set of plays from the Bohemian Province, which were preserved in their entirety.
In the first party of the study, the ways the secondary parts have been defined by dramatic theorists are shortly outlined. Similarly to other literary theorists, Jesuits frequently referred to ancient authors, especially Aristotle, and adopted the complete system of ancient dramatic theory. At the same time, however, their works are firmly anchored in the baroque context. That applies to Jesuit school plays as well: eventhough they in many respects followed the ancient drama, they also absorbed influences from the contemporary theatre. Thanks to this combination, Jesuit drama evolved into a distinctive remarkable structure.

The study deals with 17th and 18th century Jesuit school dramas from Bohemian lands that were played in Jesuit colleges at the end of the school year. This event was initially connected with awarding the best students
and staging one play, performed by selected students from all the classes. By the 1670s, another practice prevailed in Bohemian, Austrian and Hungarian province: thenceforth, each class rehearsed a piece of their own.
The main purpose of this article is to compare three tragedies written in the 50s of the 17th century by Arnold Engel (1620–1690) with some plays from the 18th century and to show, if and how the mentioned change is reflected in the structure of the dramas and in their style.

The object of the paper is a reflexion of Aristotle's concept of mimesis as an artistic imitation of reality in Baroque Jesuit tragedy Trnava provenance called Švehla. The author aims to demonstrate how the personality of Ján Švehla is artistically captured in concerned school drama in historical context. It is based on comparison of Latin periochis of tragedy Švehla and available historiographical period source – the historical source text from the thirty first Bonfini's Decades of Hungarian History.

In this article, an attempt will be made to analyse the Jesuit drama of Georg Bernardt, in terms of its existential philosophy content. It will become apparent that the Jesuits, in accordance here with reformatory theology, assume the existence of a normative facticity. In this normative facticity, the Jesuits then, in most profound conflict with reformatory thought, believe in the possibility to work towards one's state of grace.

The time we see on stage. Which time is it?

Most superficially theater can be seen as creative cultural communication going along the easy visual way of representation, a technique comparable to using rhetorical figures (e.g. personification and allegory) in writing or painting. However, both visual ways/tools of artistic expression (theater and allegory) are in functional sense advanced mechanisms of cognizance and teaching about the form of existence of the human world as neccessarily embedded in time. There would be no reason for further study if we were clear about the quality of time embedding the events we see on the medieval stage. And what we do see is, to be sure, whether the physical time, nor a fictional time.
Opposite to reading of fixed and thence „timeless” written messages, responsive dialogue presupposes existential context for the apperception of direct speech, even more necessarily than individual speaking does (cf. W. Ong: somebody’s existence and presence implicated by voice heard). Radio drama, and voice recording in general, prove that for the sake of representing (the existence of) a speaking person the space is less important than time. The actual, especially spoken interaction between characters of drama remains the strongest device of representing (=expressing and understanding) human relatedness to time. If it is „obviously”impossible to talk to each other across time, then vice-versa, actual talking of persons from different times we see on stage forces our cognitive apparatus to constitute another time in which this is possible. This is precisely what we have to do as audience of some types of medieval and post-medieval drama and painting (especially those inspired by religion), in which responsive dialogue and actual interaction are happening between personages belonging to different times and places. Commonly people from the time and place of Christ’s incarnation (Bethleem, Jerusalem) are set in the time and space of the European audience. When such people interact – they are meeting each other in the same time, they exist (for the time being) in one common „moment”of talking and interacting, while historically they are separated by more than one thousand years. But we do see those people speaking to and fro at one time. Which time is it?
Because time is such a fundamental cognitive domain, the phenomenon of impossible speaking across time cannot be reduced to a literary construction (prosopopoeia), and it is more than the imaginary time in which meditation acts and actions (sometimes quite dramatic and preferably visual) can happen; each form of time we perceive with our senses becomes empirical and in this quality needs understanding i.e. ontological interpretation guaranteeing coherence between cognitive domains.
My paper explains the quality of time being constituted by the action in medieval religious drama, by connecting it to the liturgical idea of anamnesis, and contrasting it with the aesthetic notion of mimesis.

A barokk vallási képnyelv populáris megjelenési formái között különleges hely illeti meg az illusztrációs és az áhítati grafika csoportjait. 1 A használati kritériumok alapján elkülönített két csoport között széles átmeneti terület található, amelyet az eddigi kutatás viszonylag kevés figyelemben részesített. Ide tartoznak többek között mindazok a belső illusztrációk, címlapelőzékek, illusztráció sorozatok, amelyek az áhítati irodalom különféle kiadványtípusaiban láttak napvilágot. 2 A barokk áhítati irodalom egyik Európa-szerte elterjedt kiadványtípusa a mirákulumos könyv. Ezekben a gyakran előforduló címlapelőzékek és egyes illusztrációk mellett néha több darabból álló, összefüggő illusztráció sorozatok találhatók. Míg a címlapelőzékek és az egyes illusztrációk az eredeti szövegösszefüggéstől elszakadva gyakran más kontextusban (pl. szentképként, imalapon, ponyvafüzet címlapján) is előfordulhatnak, a sorozatok tagjai az adott összefüggés nélkül értelmüket vesztik, ezért másutt nem használhatták fel őket. Az illusztráció sorozatok a mirákulumos könyvekben rendszerint a különböző elbeszélő szövegekhez kapcsolódnak, s jelentősen hozzájárulnak azok megértéséhez, értelmezéséhez és rögzítéséhez. Ezzel már utaltunk arra a másik kutatási területre, amellyel ezeknek az ábrázolásoknak az elemzése összekapcsolódik: a történeti elbeszéléskutatásra. Az iskolai színjátszás, azon belül a jezsuita dráma műfaja jelentősen felértéke-lődött az utóbbi évek magyar irodalomtörténeti kutatásában. Az adattárak, forrás-jegyzékek, szövegkiadások, esettanulmányok és tematikus bibliográfiák után elké-szültek az első monográfiák, melyek egyértelműen tanúsítják a jezsuita színház kiemelkedő szerepét a kor irodalmi életében és művelődésében. A jezsuita színház egyik alapvető jellemzője a nemzetközi tájékozódás, s a hagyományozódási csa-tornák a rend alapvetően internacionális és interkulturális szerveződésének meg-felelően átfogják egész Európát. A darabok mintái gyakran származnak az adott nyelvterületen kívülről, s a témák és szövegek a programok csereforgalma, a latin nyelvűség, a kéziratok kölcsönzése, másolása révén rendszeresen átlépik a nyelvi és az országhatárokat. I Az iskoladrámáknak jól körülhatárolható csoportját alkotják a nemzeti történe-lemről szóló darabok, s nem véletlen, hogy az első tématörténeti monográfia a magyar történelmi tárgyú iskolai színjátékokról készült el. S bár a szerzők kizárták a kutatásból a külföldön bemutatott magyar tárgyú előadásokat, a német nyelvterületen előadott jezsuita darabok repertóriuma alapján kísérletet tettek a német jezsuita színpadokon játszott, magyar tárgyú darabok időbeli megoszlásának megállapítására, s fölvetették a magyarországi és anémet előadásokban leggyakrabban szereplő magyar történeti személyiségek előfordulási arányának, az azonosságok és különbségek vizsgálatának lehetőségét. 5

The aim of the study is to describe how the theoretical foundations of the most prominent Jesuit drama poetics were applied in the Jesuit order drama and theatre practice in the territory of present-day Slovakia during the Baroque period. The subject of the study is a discourse between the theoretical frameworks of one of the four known essential teaching aids of the Jesuit grammar school in Skalica, Collegium repetentium humaniorum – a manuscript of the compendium of the Latin language and realia entitled Commentarii in Litteras Humaniores (Notes on Human Sciences) whose chapter De Drammatibus (On Drama) summarises the Jesuit theory of drama of prominent 17th century European authors – and the plotline of a Jesuit school play by Jozef Bartakovič Moyses (Moses), which was staged in July 1749 in Trnava.

The aim of the author's paper is the issue of the history of Jesuit school theatre, that was developing during the years 1673 to 1773 in the highly protestant environment in the one of the most important reformation centres in Upper Hungary, namely in the independent royal city Prešov. The paper is focus on the history of Jesuit school play in Prešov in background history of Lutheran college in Prešov, that mostly in its first historical stage (1666 – 1711) reflected stormy struggle between Hungarian Habsburg absolutism and the estates company, that is mainly the struggle between catholic and protestant church. Immanent part of the paper is differentiation of one hundred and twenty Jesuit school plays according to individual periods of development of baroque – dramatic theatre production of Jesuits in the city of Prešov and its characterization along the lines of historical records of Jesuit chroniclers as well.

Artykuł omawia wybrane sztuki jezuickie z połowy XVIII w., w których występują postaci kobiece, wbrew przyjętym pod koniec XVI w. regułom (Ratio studiorum). Analiza utworów poprzedzona została rozważaniami teoretycznymi na temat stosunku jezuitów do ról kobiecych. Przypomniano wypowiedzi teoretyczne o charakterze polemicznym, wstępy dramaturgów do tragedii, w których uzasadniali oni brak postaci kobiecych. Analiza pokazała, że bohaterkami sztuk kolegiackich mogły być alegorie, personifikacje czy postaci mitologiczne. Ich działania stanowiły najczęściej symboliczny komentarz do akcji głównej dramatów. Prześledzono też zabiegi autorów tłumaczących obcojęzyczne dramaty na język polski, mające na celu dostosowanie pierwowzorów do wymogów scen kolegiackich. Znaczną część artykułu wypełnia analiza kilku tekstów, w których pojawiły się role żeńskie. Ukazano celowe zabiegi dramaturgów polegających na uwznioślaniu postaci kobiecych oraz konstruowaniu ich w oparciu o schematy znane z ról męskich.

The article discusses selected Jesuit plays from the mid-18th century, in which there are female figures, contrary to the rules adopted at the end of the 16th century (Ratio studiorum). The analysis of the works was preceded by theoretical considerations on the attitude of the Jesuits to women’s roles. Polemical theoretical statements and the introduction of playwrights to the tragedies in which they justified the lack of female figures were reminded. The analysis showed that the heroines of collegiate art could be allegories, personifications or mythological figures. Their actions were most often a symbolic commentary on the main action of the dramas. The efforts of authors translating foreign-language dramas into Polish, aimed at adapting the original to the requirements of collegiate scenes, were also analysed. A significant part of the article consists of an analysis of several texts in which female roles appeared. Intentional dramaturgy has been presented, consisting of elevating female figures and constructing them on the basis of models known from male roles.

Interesuje mnie problem przemian dzieła napisanego specjalnie na potrzeby jednej placówki edukacyjnej (szkoły w Saint-Cyr prowadzonej przez panią de Maintenon, kochankę Ludwika XIV) w twory zależne, ale również związane z kształceniem. Przeróbki Atalii Racine'a (napisanej w 1691 roku) znajdziemy w niemalże każdym kręgu językowym Europy XVIII wieku. Często powstały one właśnie na potrzeby szkół - przede wszystkim jezuickich (co samo w sobie jest intrygujące, jeśli wziąć pod uwagę wychowanie Racine'a przez najzagorzalszych przeciwników jezuitów) i, co jeszcze ciekawsze, męskich. Saint-Cyr było szkołą dla panienek z dobrych domów. Sztuka zatem napisana dla młodych dziewcząt zostaje wielokrotnie (m.in. w Niemczech, Italii, Polsce) przepisana tak, by usunąć z niej postacie żeńskie. W dodatku powstają różne wersje muzyki do scen chóralnych tejże tragedii. Racine powrócił do starożytnego modelu przerywania akcji wystąpieniami zbio-rowości nie tylko z chęci pełniejszego zbliżenia się do modeli antycznych, ale także po to, by panienki z Saint-Cyr miały możliwość ćwiczenia śpiewu na scenie. Zastanowimy się zatem także nad obecnością lub nieobecnością fragmentów muzycznych (różnych kompozytorów - w tym autora pierwszej wersji muzyki do tego utworu, Jeana-Baptiste Moreau) w osiemnastowiecznych przeróbkach tejże sztuki.
