Islamic philosophy and Sufism evolved as distinct yet interweaving strands of Islamic thought and practice. Despite differences, they have shared a concern with the perfection of the soul through the development of character. In The Polished Mirror, Cyrus Ali Zargar studies the ways in which, through teaching and storytelling, pre-modern Muslims lived, negotiated, and cultivated virtues. Examining the writings of philosophers, ascetics, poets, and saints, he locates virtue ethics within a dynamic moral tradition.

This paper focuses on the literary relationship between Ibn Ṭufayl's Ḥayy and Avicenna's (the latter being ostensibly the immediate source of inspiration of the former), and on the philosophical implications of this literary relationship. While Ibn Ṭufayl borrowed Avicenna's protagonists and framework, he eliminated the figure of the guiding sage, thus breaking sharply not only from Avicenna but also from the conventions of the literary genre that served as his model, the initiation story. This paper is primarily dedicated to presenting this dramatic, yet hitherto underestimated , change, and to examining possible explanations for Ibn Ṭufayl's revolutionary move.

This article examines the place of law in the falsafa (philosophy) tradition. Political philosophy was largely a derivative topic for the philosophers of the Islamic world. One indication of this is that the falsafa tradition did not produce a coherent philosophy of law that would concern itself with the meaning, essence, source, and forms of "law": as such. This article looks at several philosophers in the Islamic tradition who are associated with political philosophy, including Abu Nasr al-Farabi and Ibn Sina, with particular emphasis on their view that the highest form of human existence consists in intellectual and spiritual perfection. It also considers the views of Ibn Bajja, Ibn Tufayl, and Ibn Rushd.

Qu’on ouvre certains livres anciens, en arabe, en latin, ceux qu’on ne lit pas et qu’on oppose à tort, on y trouvera des auteurs médiévaux qu’obsède, non pas la lutte, mais la question de la pensée. Ils pensent, ils brûlent leur vie à penser, et cette vie-là, ils la posent sur une table, et ils regardent, et ils s’interrogent. On les comprend. Ils veulent savoir qui ils sont, ce qu’ils font, ce dans quoi ils espèrent ou s’épuisent.
Qu’appellent-ils penser ? Descartes, pour l’homme, avait sa réponse : je suis une chose qui pense, c’est-à-dire « une chose qui doute, qui conçoit, qui affirme, qui nie, qui veut, qui ne veut pas, qui imagine aussi, et qui sent ». Que disent-ils, eux, et avant lui ? Que répondent-ils, dans leur langue, qui soit bouleversant, gelé par l’oubli, et donc neuf ? C’est ce qu’on cherche, librement, en déclinant les entrées.
Car la pensée est équivoque, plurielle. Aristote écrit que l’intellect est comme la main, instrument d’instruments ; la pensée l’est aussi. Penser est une main, un instrument d’instruments, un mot rempli de mots. L’homme n’est pas l’être sans œuvre, il est l’être dont l’acte n’a pas qu’un nom, a plus qu’un nom, l’animal dont l’œuvre propre est innommable autrement que dans la multiplicité.
Voici donc une sorte de lexique, certains repères d’une carte mentale où paraîtrait, dans les connexions, ce que penser signifie. Les textes s’enchaînent, suivent un fil, mais se nuancent aussi, voire s’opposent, et des intermèdes, comme des marges, leur servent d’illustration, de contrepoint, ou bien d’alternative. Ce qu’on propose est ouvert, évidemment. Chacun a son mot à dire – et c’est tant mieux.

Muslim philosophers inherited, from the ancient Greek tradition, the Aristotelian conception of a threefold soul (vegetable, animal, and rational) that emerges concomitant with the human body.  The relationship between that body—one maintained by a balance of four humors—and virtuous human character traits occupied every major thinker in classical Islamic philosophical ethics, from the Ikhwān al-Ṣafā’ and Miskawayh to Abū Ḥamid al-Ghazālī.  The possibility of a perfected constitution that would allow for the development of the perfect human intellect became the basis for Ibn Ṭufayl’s Ḥayy ibn Yaqẓān, a text that expands upon and indeed alters Avicenna’s view on the relationship between climes, the human constitution, and the human soul.  In the philosophy of Mullā Ṣadrā, two factors allowed for even further contemplation upon the perfect constitution:  First, Ṣadrā’s theory of substantial motion allowed him and his followers to view the soul-body relationship not as an accidental attachment, but rather as a completely integrated development:  The soul begins as body, even if it becomes abstracted from the body in its substantive transformation.  Second, Ṣadrā’s access to narrations from the Shii Hadith canon concerning the “root-clay” (ṭīna) provided a scriptural basis for the possibility of the ethically perfect body.  In such narrations, the hearts of the believers, in contrast to the hearts of the disbelievers, are composed of superior clay that yields their tendency to good—clay ultimately derived from the clay of the imam.  In his role as a Hadith specialist, Fayḍ Kāshānī, the most eminent student of Ṣadrā, greatly expands on the relationship between the imam’s ṭīna and ethical perfection.  As evidenced in the writings of Shaykh Aḥmad al-Aḥsāʾī and especially ʿAllāmah Muḥammad Ḥusayn Ṭabāṭabā’ī, contemplation on the perfections of the imam’s body has real implications not only for Shii psychology and eschatology, but also for the lived practice of Shii Islam.

This article studies the politics and ethics in Ibn Ṭufayl’s twelfth-century allegory, Risālat Ḥayy ibn Yaqẓān. I discuss this allegory alongside Ibn Sīnā’s own Ḥayy ibn Yaqẓān and Absāl and Salāmān, first, to show that their representations of politics are not reducible to epistemology, and second, to argue that Ibn Ṭufayl inverts the political principles depicted in Ibn Sīnā’s two tales. The paper focuses on how the characters in each allegory interact with one another, and it reconstructs the neglected politics and ethics of the allegories’ seemingly minor characters. I argue that in Ibn Tufayl’s descriptions of Ḥayy’s failure to convert the neighboring islanders, the islanders consistently act in accordance with three political ideals: association, hospitality, and friendship. The islanders’ reactions to Ḥayy’s arrival and to his attempts to ‘educate’ them show each of these ideals broken down into an antinomy. Ibn Tufayl’s critique of these political ideals turns on their internal potential for self-subversion.

In recent decades, the trope that classical Muslim thinkers anticipated or influenced modern European thought has provided an easy endorsement of their contemporary relevance. This article studies how Arab editors and intellectuals, from 1882 to 1947, understood the twelfth-century Andalusian philosopher Ibn Tufayl, and Arabo-Islamic philosophy generally. This modern generation of Arab scholars also attached significance to classical Arabic texts as precursors to modern European thought. They invited readers to retrospectively identify with Ibn Tufayl and his treatise, Hayy ibn Yaqzan. Comparisons of Ibn Tufayl to European thinkers, and re-presentations of Hayy ibn Yaqzan as the precedent or genesis of European thought, facilitated these editors’ global imaginaries, anti-colonial projects and political fantasies. This article tracks these projects and fantasies through the afterlife of Hayy ibn Yaqzan from early printings and generalist surveys to later editions and studies, as Ibn Tufayl’s significance became sutured into his imagined importance for Europe, and for going beyond Europe.

This course aims to survey Classical Arabic literatures in poetic, novelistic, critical, autobiographical, and travel genres. Readings expose students to samples of original translated texts from the creative heritage of Arab-Islamic civilization. Creativity is defined as the venture of resolving cultural problems within available intellectual, cosmological, and literary means. Selections from the following will be appreciated, analyzed, and discussed:

Ο Αμπού Μπακρ Ιμπν Τουφάυλ ήταν ελάσσων αλλά αξιοπρόσεκτη μορφή στην πνευματική ιστορία του αραβικού Μεσαίωνα. Γεννήθηκε στις αρχές του 12ου αιώνα και πέθανε το 1185. Καταγόταν από παλαιά αρχοντική οικογένεια της αραβικής χερσονήσου, αλλά έζησε όλη τη ζωή του στα μουσουλμανικά χαλιφάτα της Δύσης, στην Ανδαλουσία και στο Μαρόκο. Σταδιοδρόμησε ως γιατρός και σύμβουλος στην αυλή του χαλίφη Αμπού Γιακούμπ Γιουσούφ στο Μαρακές. Εκεί έγινε ο μέντορας αρκετών νέων διανοουμένων και επιστημόνων, τους οποίους υποστήριξε στις έρευνες και στην ανέλιξή τους. Προώθησε σημαντικά τη μελέτη της αστρονομίας, εξάσκησε με ζήλο την ανατομία και την ιατροδικαστική. Ήταν ένας homo universalis και «αναγεννησιακός» σοφός πολύ πριν από τη λεγόμενη Αναγέννηση. Ο πιο γνωστός από τους προστατευόμενούς του ήταν ο νεαρός Αβερρόης, ο οποίος έμελλε να διαπρέψει ως συστηματικός σχολιαστής του Αριστοτέλη. Ο Ιμπν Τουφάυλ εισήγαγε τον Αβερρόη στην αυλή του χαλίφη, καθοδήγησε τις σπουδές του, και πάνω από όλα τού ενέπνευσε την ιδέα για τον συνολικό υπομνηματισμό του αριστοτελικού έργου.

Την εσώτερη ζωή του Ιμπν Τουφάυλ την καθόρισαν κατεξοχήν δύο διανοητικά πάθη: η μελέτη της ελληνικής φιλοσοφίας και η μυστική διδασκαλία του Σουφισμού. Καταγίνηκε να συνταιριάσει το φως του ελληνικού ορθολογισμού, που είχε συνεπάρει τους μορφωμένους Άραβες της εποχής, με την οραματική έκσταση της βαθύτερης Ανατολής. Για αυτόν τον σκοπό συνέθεσε πολλά συγγράμματα φιλοσοφικού, θεολογικού και μεταφυσικού περιεχομένου, καθώς και ιατρικές πραγματείες και διδακτικά ποιήματα. Τίποτε από αυτά όμως δεν σώθηκε ακέραιο ώς τις μέρες μας. Το μόνο έργο του που γλύτωσε από τον χρόνο είναι το φιλοσοφικό αφήγημα Χάυυ Ιμπν Γιακζάν, ένα από τα πιο ιδιόμορφα βιβλία της μεσαιωνικής αραβικής γραμματείας. Εδώ, με περίβλημα την ιστορία ενός έκθετου παιδιού που μεγαλώνει μοναχό σε κάποιο ερημονήσι, ο Ιμπν Τουφάυλ προσπάθησε πάλι να χρησιμοποιήσει τα συλλογιστικά μέσα του καθαρού ορθολογισμού ως κλίμακα για την άνοδο στον κόσμο του νοητού και εφαλτήριο για τη μυστικιστική ενόραση της θεότητας. Παραγνωρισμένο στον καιρό του, το μικρό αυτό βιβλίο ανακαλύφθηκε και λατρεύτηκε από την Ευρώπη της Αναγέννησης και του Διαφωτισμού. Επηρέασε τον Τζων Λοκ και τον Ροβινσώνα Κρούσο, τον Λάιμπνιτς, τον Ρουσώ και τον Κίπλινγκ, και έγινε το διαβατήριο για να περάσει ο συγγραφέας του στην παγκόσμια ιστορία του πνεύματος.

Συγχωνεύοντας ετερόκλιτα αφηγηματικά υλικά, ο Ιμπν Τουφάυλ δημιούργησε κάτι μοναδικό στην ιστορία της λογοτεχνίας: ένα φιλοσοφικό διήγημα βασισμένο σε αμιγώς μυστικιστική διδασκαλία. Ο Παύλος Καλλιγάς μετέφρασε αυτό το ανεπανάληπτο έργο σε λόγο ευθύβολο, ακριβή και εκπληκτικά σύγχρονο. Αν το κείμενο αποδιδόταν λόγου χάρη στον Μπόρχες, και ο μυστηριώδης Άραβας φιλόσοφος που το υπογράφει παρουσιαζόταν σαν λόγια επινόηση συγγραφικής πλαστοπροσωπίας, δεν θα μας παραξένευε. Για την ακρίβεια, κάποιος σαν εμένα, που δεν πολυπιστεύει στα οράματα του μυστικισμού και λογαριάζει τη μεταφυσική και τη θεολογία σαν κλάδους της φανταστικής λογοτεχνίας, είναι δύσκολο να πειστεί ότι το κείμενο δεν έχει γραφτεί τωόντι από τον Μπόρχες. Ο μακρινός μας Άραβας ιατροφιλόσοφος, που πίστευε πως είχε ατενίσει τη θεϊκή αλήθεια σε μυστική έκσταση, εφηύρε τρόπους και τεχνικές της φανταστικής γραφής που έμελλε να ανακαλυφθούν ξανά πολύ αργότερα από τον Βολταίρο, τον Γουέλς ή τον Έκο, και να εφαρμοστούν σε αλλόκοτους κόσμους της σύγχρονης μυθοποιίας, όπως το μυστηριώδες νησί του Μορέλ, το παραδείσιο σύμπαν της Περελάντρα ή ο ιδεαλιστικός πλανήτης Τλαιν.

Πολύ πριν από τον Βολταίρο, το φιλοσοφικό διήγημα είχε ένδοξη προϊστορία. Χρωστούμε χάρη στον Παύλο Καλλιγά που έκανε προσιτό στη γλώσσα μας έναν από τους σπουδαιότερους κρίκους στην αλυσίδα των προδρόμων του είδους. Ο "Χάυυ ιμπν Γιακζάν" είναι ένα μικρό σουφιστικό μυθιστόρημα που ενσωματώνει επεισοδιακά μοτίβα, σκηνοθεσίες ή τυπικά πρόσωπα από λογής-λογής θρύλους, παραμύθια, διδακτικές παραβολές ή περιπετειώδεις αφηγήσεις του καιρού του. Ουσιαστικά, ο Ιμπν Τουφάυλ σχεδιάζει μια τελεολογική πορεία της ανθρώπινης πολιτισμικής εξέλιξης προς τον μυστικισμό, που προβάλλεται ως το ευγενέστερο επίτευγμα του πνεύματος. Ολόκληρος ο πολιτισμός, οι τέχνες και οι επιστήμες επινοούνται και αναπτύσσονται με τελικό στόχο την εξύψωση της ανθρώπινης ψυχής στη θέαση του θείου. Ο κόσμος υπάρχει για να καταλήξει σε ένα συνεχές εκστατικό όραμα. Αυτή είναι η κεντρική ιδέα του έργου, που ξεκινάει με την πρωτόγονη ανατομική επέμβαση στην καρδιά ενός ελαφιού για να καταλήξει στη μυστικιστική ένωση με το Απόλυτο.

Αναρωτιέμαι αν ο Ιμπν Τουφάυλ έλαβε ποτέ κάποια πρόγνωση της μελλοντικής επιτυχίας του κατά τις εκστατικές του εμπειρίες. Τελικά, η αφηγηματική του τέχνη μάλλον επιζεί και διατηρείται καλύτερα από τον κάπως υπεροπτικό μυστικισμό και τον απρόσωπο υπερβατικό θεό του — δοξασμένος να είναι.
