Froebel

The purpose of this analysis is to examine enduring creative approaches of educational philosophers alongside key emerging digital resources that inform inclusive art education.  Froebelian education theory, like that of Montessori, Malaguzzi, and Steiner is very arts-rich in that Froebel defined learning itself as a learner-centered, exploratory creative process (Mullineaux, 1996). Teaching with a foundational knowledge of the influence of each of these philosophers on learning in visual art often empowers us to reclaim the diverse roles of the educator and artist in contemporary art rooms.  This chapter introduces selected mobile learning applications and digital resources related to these philosophies, with an analysis of their potential for students with disabilities and exceptionalities. The selected examples of Froebel’s Gifts and artifacts of pedagogy from Montessori, Waldorf, and Reggio Emilia practices is followed by discussion of practical uses of materials and approaches from these enduring philosophies in learning explorations emphasizing craft, nature, and play. Suggestions will be offered for future practice that mindfully utilizes such digital resources and communities alongside physical and haptic resources. Concerns about screen time and media saturation will also be addressed.

Från att ha varit en tämligen marginell företeelse vid 1900-talets början, har förskolan blivit en angelägenhet för en stor del av den svenska befolkningen. Idag deltar mer än 90 procent av alla barn mellan två och sex år i offentligt finansierad förskole- och barnomsorgsverksamhet. Avsikten med föreliggande antologi är att belysa olika aspekter av denna avgörande utveckling. Bland författarna märks både de som bidragit till att definiera forskningsfältet, såväl nationellt som internationellt, och de vars bidrag illustrerar mer sentida utvecklingstendenser inom området.

I fokus för antologin står tre teman som varit centrala både i förskolans historia och dess historieskrivning: stat, yrkeskår och individ. Bland de ämnen som behandlas återfinns den svenska barnträdgårdsrörelsens historia, Montessoripedagogiken reception under mellankrigstiden, utvecklingen av pedagogiska leksaker och den statliga televisionens betydelse för förskolesektorns expansion. Tack vare den inledande introduktionen till förskolans historieskrivning, och den avslutande bibliografi n med närmare 200 poster, utgör volymen också en god introduktion till ett mycket vitalt forskningsfält.

Friedrich Froebel is a major figure in the history of educational philosophy thanks to his attention to early childhood education and care. In 1843 he became frustrated by a lack of attention to his ideas from his peers (who were men) and so began training women to become kindergarten teachers and published his book of songs and instructions for mothers of babies and very young children, 'Mutter und Koselieder' (Froebel, 1843). He believed that children should be the centre of family life and that their carers should be knowledgeable about the 'laws of development', which he located within divine law and connectedness to the natural world . He argued that the act of singing to babies was a means to convey motherly feelings of love and care; that singing (his) songs could stir latent emotions, which he believed women were biologically predisposed to feel; and that the content of his songs helped both women and babies to understand their place, role and purpose in the world and connectedness to their surroundings and their (divine) creator.

Observations of play in early childhood education have typically been documented in paper-based formats (e.g. scrapbooks, written notes, printed photographs) as part of assessment practices. However, there is a growing trend in early childhood education towards using commercial software to record learning in digital formats, where video, audio, photographs and writing can be combined. These multi-media forms of ‘digital documentation’ offer new possibilities to recognise, represent and value children’s multiple signs of learning in new ways, and to share these narratives with parents and children. Yet there is little research-based guidance on digital documentation, so early education assessment practices run the risk of being guided by commercial drivers rather than by child-centred learning theories.

In this study, we worked with educators to develop an early childhood pedagogy of observation, documentation and assessment that brings Froebelian principles of the ‘uniqueness of every child’s capacity and potential’ and ‘holistic nature of development’ to documentation practices in contemporary early years settings. Fieldwork included case studies of children aged 3-5 years living with disadvantage and/or in the early stages of learning English in three diverse multicultural early years settings in London. The study design was framed by a multimodal social semiotic perspective on learning (Kress 2010) and an ethnographic approach to social science enquiry. Data generation included video recordings, examples of documentation of children’s learning, interviews with educators, parent questionnaires and video-prompted discussions with children. Thematic and fine- grained multimodal analysis of video extracts resulted in rich findings regarding the opportunities and constraints of different approaches used by the participating settings in their observation and documentation of young children’s learning.

In answer to the notion that spiritual experiences are unpredictable and irregular, voiced in not only one specific paper but rather generally assumed by Western scholars, I present the evidence of my own life. Both in visual and conceptual form I demonstrate how, over a period of eighty years there have been four distinct cycles within which spiritual experiences occurred rather regularly and in a repeating pattern. These were invariably responses to various degrees of stress, which the experiences served either to prepare for, or to resolve. The effect of these experiences was to empower me to move on with my life and career without any serious hindrance or breaks in continuity, despite, in many instances, strong opposition or attack. The form in which these events occurred within the four cycles prepared my mind to receive the ancient Vedantic form of the chatushpad, or a series of levels of consciousness, again in contradistinction to the usual Western model, which at the moment seems largely to posit only the material world and a theoretical "Consciousness", without any distinguishing features. While hoping for corroboration of my experiences, I present some circumstances that may have predisposed me to this unusual mode of experience and some background evidence that for me supports my orientation to the chatushpad as well as its possible relationship to quantum theories of learning.

DESPUÉS DE LA PANDEMIA NO PODEMOS SEGUIR EDUCANDO de la misma forma que lo hacíamos: ni solo virtualidad, ni solo presencialidad. Debemos replantear nuestra forma de dar clase, de tratar, de producir, de trasladar, de servir el conocimiento. Las clases que usábamos para comunicar e informar acerca de los diversos saberes a alumnos que debían regresar esos mismos contenidos para su evaluación ya prescribió: deben dar lugar a los trabajos, a los procesos, a la resolución solidaria y creativa de las situaciones problemáticas. Los docentes no estamos para dar respuestas sino para disparar interrogantes y acompañar los procesos de búsquedas de manera presencial o de manera virtual, pero siempre con una virtualidad o una presencialidad virtuosas.

En estas líneas analizamos el compromiso del municipio de Zaragoza con la mejora y creación de escuelas de instrucción primaria pública durante el primer tercio del siglo XX, y, esencialmente, su deuda con las teorías pedagógicas modernas. Estas últimas se fundamentan en la importancia de la infancia, de ese período dorado en el que se confía para regenerar la humanidad, y se constatan en la concepción del espacio escolar y en la recepción de determinados medios educativos, que abogan por el desenvolvimiento del niño y por el descubrimiento del mundo exterior.

Friedrich Fröbel is known as the founder of the modern kindergarten and for his development of novel learning materials called Gifts and Occupations. One of the foci of Fröbel's programme was mathematical education, which he addressed and taught through various activities that encouraged the largely implicit transmission of mathematical principles. Based on a historical analysis of Fröbel's background in mathematics and crystallography and drawing on Fröbel's notes, the first part of this paper proposes that the mathematics and the various Gifts taught and used in Fröbelian kindergartens have their roots in two traditions, both of which intersected in Fröbel's thought: first, a visual tradition, influenced by drawings of crystals; second, a tradition influenced implicitly by German Idealism consisting of geometric methods and conceptions as well as notions derived from crystallography used to analyse the structure of crystals and mainly developed by Christian Samuel Weiß. The second part of this paper will inspect these influences drawing on Fröbel's previously unpublished notes.

Ο Friedich Froebel, πριν τρεις αιώνες, έκανε μια δυναμική εισαγωγή στην προσχολική ζωή του παιδιού, με μεθόδους οι οποίες θεωρούνται, ακόμα και τώρα, οι πιο σύγχρονες, όπως το παιχνίδι, η αυτενέργεια αλλά και η σύνδεση του νηπίου με τον φυσικό κόσμο και η συνειδητοποίηση της οντότητας του μέσω ενός συστήματος ενεργοποίησης των αισθήσεων του. Έναν αιώνα αργότερα ιδρύεται η ακαδημία του Bauhaus και εισάγει τους σπουδαστές στο πρόγραμμα της σχολής με μια παρόμοια παιδαγωγική προσαρμοσμένη σε ενήλικες. Ο Johannes Itten στο προκαταρκτικό μάθημα του Bauhaus συστήνει τους σπουδαστές στα οπτικά και απτικά στοιχεία της τέχνης με παιγνιώδεις ασκήσεις, δίνοντας ιδιαίτερη σημασία στη πολυαισθητηριακή αντίληψη αλλά και στα γεωμετρικά στοιχεία της φύσης, στην ανάλυση του χρώματος και τη σύνθεση. Ο Itten, έχοντας υπάρξει μαθητής του Froebel φέρνει τις παιδαγωγικές ιδέες του και τις εφαρμόζει στην ακαδημία δημιουργώντας αναταραχή με τις καινοτόμες μεθόδους του στην εικαστική εκπαίδευση. The following paper continues the previous part, and examines the influence of crystallography on Fröbel’s conception of mathematics. In this part we focus on yet unpublished material. These unpublished notes of Fröbel underline the visual transfer of drawing and images of crystals, mainly developed by Haüy, which were widespread at the turn of the eighteenth to the nineteenth century, into the Fröbelian activities. Hence, the paper shows that a transfer of knowledge occurred from crystallography to mathematical education as well as the interweaving of philosophical and scientific reflections in Fröbel’s thought as early as the late 1810s.

The article explores Rabindranath Tagore's ideas on child education, focusing on Ta-gore's notion of the child, method and nonmethod in education, a deep understanding of education in relation to the child's surroundings, and the ways in which Tagore envisaged the relationship between the child and the teacher-the guru-shishya dynamics. These investigations are transcultural in nature in that they engage with several thinkers and different clusters of ideas from the Western tradition, namely, Tolstoy, Rousseau, William Godwin, Martin Buber, Froebel, and others. The article also demonstrates how some of Tagore's ideas fall in line with certain contemporary discourses on child education.

Ίσως η πιο ξεκάθαρη αντίληψη για την σημασία της παραγωγικότητας κα-τά την εκβιομηχάνιση της δυτικής κοινω-νίας μπορεί ν' απεικονισθεί στις αυστηρές γεωμετρικές δομές των κατασκευαστικών παιχνιδιών με τα ξύλινα blocks. Στο περι-βάλλον της σχολής της Βαϊμάρης εμφανίζε-ται ένα αντίστοιχο παιχνίδι που μεταφέρει το αίτημα για την αστικοποίηση και τον ρό-λο του «χτίζειν» στο πλαίσιο των οικονομι-κών μετασχηματισμών των αρχών του 20 ού αιώνα. Ενώ ενθαρρύνει τη διαδικασία της κατασκευής/παραγωγής του παραμένει α-νοικτό και ως προς την πλήρη αποσυναρμο-λόγησή του. Πρόκειται για το «μικρό παιχνί-δι κατασκευής πλοίου» (Kleine Schif-fbauspiel, 1924) που σχεδίασε η Alma Siedhoff-Buscher, φοιτήτρια της σχολής της Βαϊμάρης από το 1922 και για τα επόμενα τρία χρόνια. Η Buscher είχε παρακολουθήσει τα μαθή-ματα του Johannes Itten, του Paul Klee και του Wassily Kandinsky και συνέχισε τις σπουδές της στο εργαστήριο ξυλογλυπτικής του Georg Muche και του Josef Hartwig. Ο συνδυασμός αυτών με την παρουσία της στο εργαστήριο ύφανσης την οδήγησαν στο να σχεδιάσει σχεδόν αποκλειστικά έπιπλα και παιχνίδια για τα παιδιά. Εξάλλου, κάτι τέτοιο αποτελούσε μέρος της διδασκαλίας κάποι-ων καθηγητών της στη σχολή της Βαϊμάρης, όπως του Itten στο προπαρασκευαστικό του μάθημα, και άλλες φορές μέρος της γενικό-τερης εικαστικής τους πρακτικής, όπως για παράδειγμα στον Klee και τον Schlemmer. Tο «Kleine Schiffbauspiel», υπήρξε η πιο δημοφιλής κατασκευή της Buscher, την ο-ποία ανέλαβαν να διανέμουν οι εκδόσεις του ινστιτούτου «Pestalloci-Fröbel» το 1924 1. Έ-χει ενδιαφέρον, θεωρώ, να σταθμεύσουμε πε-ρισσότερο σε αυτή την λεπτομέρεια γιατί θα διαπιστώσουμε ότι υπάρχει μια ισχυρή αλλά ταυτόχρονα και υποτιμημένη επιρροή του εκπαιδευτή Friedrich Fröbel στην διαμόρ-φωση της μοντέρνας τέχνης και αρχιτεκτο-νικής. Ο ίδιος ως παιδαγωγός είναι υπεύθυνος για τον όρο και τις πρακτικές του Kindergarten, καθώς και για την επινόηση των «δώρων», των μικρών σε μέγεθος ξύλι-νων σχημάτων με τα οποία μπορείς να «χτί-σεις» δομές. Είναι σίγουρο, πως για παρά-δειγμα οι Frank Lloyd Wright, Kandinsky, Le Corbusier, Piet Mondrian και Paul Klee έ-χουν κρατήσει στα χεριά τους ως μικρά παι-διά τα γεωμετρικά ξύλινα blocks των «δώ-ρων» αυτών σε νηπιαγωγεία που εφάρμοζαν τις αρχές του Φρεμπελιανού συστήματος και τα οποία προλογίζουν την σημερινή μαζική παραγωγή παιχνιδιών με βάση το χτίσιμο της κατασκευής 2. Το είδος της κατασκευής της Buscher που άνηκε στην ίδια ομάδα παιχνιδιών, αποτε-λούνταν από 22 χρωματιστά blocks διαφο-ρετικού μεγέθους, τα οποία σύμφωνα με την ίδια ενθάρρυναν τα παιδιά να επιλέξουν και να σχηματίσουν ελεύθερα συνθέσεις, μα-θαίνοντάς τα να καλλιεργούν την παρατη-ρητικότητά τους. Το κατασκευαστικό παι-χνίδι της έχει ως στόχο να εμπνεύσει τα παι-διά να δημιουργήσουν σύνθετες δομές από βασικά στοιχεία. Αυτό που, όμως, φαίνεται συναρπαστικό είναι ότι το νόημα και η λει-τουργία τους καθορίζεται από το πλαίσιο στο οποίο ορίζονται ως αφήγηση «ανάλογα με την τοποθέτησή τους», όταν για παράδειγ-μα, «μια μακρόστενη ράβδος μετατρέπεται σε άγκυρα, κουπί ή ιστίο» 3. Επιπλέον έχει σημασία να καταλάβουμε ό-τι η αξία της εκπαιδευτικής χρήσης της κα-τασκευής της εισάγει στα παιδιά «τη σύγ-χρονη δομοστοιχειωτή (modular) κατα-σκευή και το πράττει με την αποτελεσματι-κότητα που αρμόζει στις λειτουργικές τάσεις του Bauhaus» 4. Η παρουσίαση του κατασκευαστικού παι-χνιδιού της Buscher έγινε στο Haus Am Horn, το πρότυπο σπίτι που χτίστηκε για την πρώτη έκθεση του Bauhaus και για το οποίο συνέβαλαν οι Georg Muche, Gropius και Adolf Mayer, ενώ τα έπιπλα του παιδικού δωματίου τα ανέλαβε η ίδια. H ευελιξία του «μικρού πλοίου», όπως εκτέθηκε στο Haus Am Horn, φαίνεται ότι επηρέασε άμεσα τον Gropius. Πρόκειται για μια «ευελιξία» που το καθιστά παράλληλα και αρχιτεκτονική μα-κέτα-πρότυπο για τις ιδέες στέγασης του δι-ευθυντή της σχολής της Βαϊμάρης. Με την αφορμή της διακίνησης του «Grosse Schiffbauspiel» το 1924, ουσιαστικά το ίδιο σχεδόν στη δομή και την αφήγηση με το «μικρό κτίσιμο πλοίου»-αυτή τη φορά με 39 blocks-η Buscher θεώρησε ότι «η ελευ-θερία του παιχνιδιού συνίσταται στο ότι δεν επιθυμεί να είναι τίποτα άλλο» και, συσχετί-ζοντάς το με τα κινήματα της εποχής της, πρόσθετε πως δεν είναι «ούτε κυβισμός, ού-τε εξπρεσιονισμός, παρά μόνο ένα ψυχαγω-γικό παιχνίδι με χρώμα, από μαλακά και γε-ωμετρικά σχήματα με βάση την αρχή των παλαιών δομικών στοιχείων» 5. Όμως το κατασκευαστικό παιχνίδι της Alma Buscher δεν είναι τόσο «ελεύθερο» ό-σο η ιδία υποστήριζε. Στην πραγματικότητα προσδιορίζεται σε σχέση με την βούληση του παιδιού να κατασκευάσει αυτό που επιθυ-μεί. Η ελευθερία του είναι όμως αρκετά προσ-διορισμένη ως προς την επιλογή του τι μπο-ρεί κάθε φορά να «χτίσει». Ήδη στη συσκευ-ασία του προτείνεται η αναπαράσταση μιας γέφυρας, ενός σταθμού τραίνου ή μιας γυ-ναίκειας φιγούρας ενώ το κυρίαρχο μοτίβο σε αυτό εμφανίζει ένα πλοίο με ιστία, στο ο-ποίο οφείλεται άλλωστε η ονομασία του. Η συνεχής επανάληψη και οι πειραματι-σμοί με τα τουβλάκια διαφορετικών σχημά-των αναδεικνύουν το πλαίσιο των δραστη-ριοτήτων γύρω από την παραγωγή και την οικονομία στον κόσμο των ενήλικων. Το ε-ρώτημα που προκύπτει είναι το κατά πόσο και σε ποιο βαθμό επιδρά στους ανήλικους, όπως επίσης και το πώς διαμορφώνονται σε αυτό τα σχεδιαστικά πρότυπα εκείνα που υ-πηρετούν μια κοινωνική ωφελιμότητα. O Gropius επαναλάμβανε ότι «η κοινωνία χρει-άζεται μια καλή εικόνα για τον εαυτό της» και πως «αυτή είναι η δουλειά του αρχιτέ-κτονα». Από τον Fröbel ως την Buscher παρατη-ρούμε τη διαδρομή μιας παιδαγωγικής με-ταρρύθμισης, στην οποία η παραγωγικότη-τα της εργασίας και το ήθος της αγοράς εί-ναι ενταγμένα στην αφήγηση τέτοιων παι-χνιδιών με κατασκευές. Όλα αυτά συστήνο-νται ήδη από τη πρώιμη παιδική ηλικία μέ-σα από τις μικρής κλίμακας κατασκευές που συγκροτούν τις δραστηριότητες της ε-μπράγματης αγοράς και που κάνουν ορατό το φρόνημα της επένδυσης στη παραγωγή, ό-πως και την ορθολογική οργάνωση στο χτι-στό περιβάλλον. Αν όμως η υποσχόμενη μεταφορά του τα-ξιδιού με το προτεινόμενο πλοίο εξαντλείται σχεδόν και στα 22 στοιχεία της modular κα-τασκευής, στην πραγματικότητα αυτή η δυ-νατότητα του οικοδομείν, της κατασκευής ε-νός πλοίου η μιας οποιαδήποτε στέγης, μπο-ρεί να παρουσιαστεί και αντίστροφα. Αν η αρχιτεκτονική είναι η ενσάρκωση κάθε έν-νοιας συστήματος, το έργο της Buscher στέ-κεται ανάμεσα στη λογική της δομής και της αποδομής, του συστήματος και της εντρο-πίας του. Με τα ίδια υλικά μπορείς να οικο-δομήσεις ένα οποιοδήποτε προτεινόμενο σχήμα, όπως ένα πλοίο η μια γέφυρα. Ταυ-τόχρονα, όμως, μπορείς και να τα αποδομή-σεις βαθμιαία μέχρις ότου να μείνουν μόνο τα δομικά υλικά ανεξάρτητα και ασύνδετα το ένα από το άλλο ή ακόμη και διασκορπισμέ-να, όπως πάντα πράττουν τα νήπια και τα μι-κρά παιδιά μετά από κάθε προσπάθεια «χτι-σίματος». Ίσως εδώ να βρίσκεται περισσότερο το νόημα στην «ελευθερία» που προτείνει η Buscher, καθώς από τις διαθέσιμες επιλογές που έχεις μπορείς απλά να στερήσεις από το παιχνίδι το κατασκευαστικό του προγραμ-ματισμό. Το παιχνίδι της ανύψωσης ενός αυ-τοσχέδιου πύργου από ξύλινα blocks και η ευχαρίστηση του γκρεμίσματός του από τα παιδιά αποτελεί μια κοινή εμπειρία όλων. Έ-νας παιδαγωγός ή ένας σχεδιαστής θα υπο-στήριζε, βέβαια, πως το «γκρέμισμα» της δο-μής συμβάλλει στην καλύτερη κατανόηση της συμπεριφοράς των υλικών. Ως προς την ίδια, μάλιστα, χειρονομία η ψυχαναλυτική ο-πτική θα συμπλήρωνε ότι αποτελεί έναν ά-μεσο και εφικτό τρόπο να εκφραστεί το ασυ-νείδητο, τα ένστικτα καθώς και τα καταθλι-πτικά συμπτώματα του παιδιού. Όμως το παιχνίδι μιας τέτοιας πλήρους «αποδόμη-σης» έμελλε να συντρέξει κυριολεκτικά τη μοίρα της ίδιας της Alma Siedhoff-Buscher, όταν τον Σεπτέμβριο του 1944 η ζωή της τερ-ματίστηκε απότομα από μια αεροπορική ε-πιδρομή των συμμάχων στο Buchschlag, κά-που κοντά στην Φρανκφούρτη. Στο πλαίσιο της ελληνικής παιδείας η πρώτη συστηματική προσπάθεια παροχής της προσχολικής αγωγής καταγράφεται στις δεκαετίες του 1870 και 1880, όταν οι ελληνικές κοινότητες της οθωμανικής επικράτειας εισάγουν στη διάρθρωση της εκπαίδευσης το νηπιαγωγείο. Πρόκειται για μια μεθοδική και συστηματική προσπάθεια διάδοσης του θεσμού του νηπιαγωγείου, με κύρια χαρακτηριστικά τον προσδιορισμό της προσχολικής αγωγής σε βάση κοινοτική (“δημόσια”), το νεωτεριστικό παιδαγωγικό προσανατολισμό του εγχειρήματος και την υιοθέτηση του θεσμού από την εκκλησιαστική διοίκηση, το Οικουμενικό Πατριαρχείο. Επομένως, την ειδική εστίαση στο συγκεκριμένο χώρο και χρόνο προσδιορίζουν παράγοντες όπως η ευρεία ανάπτυξη του νηπιαγωγείου, η διάδοση του συστήματος του Friedrich Froebel και του νηπιακού κήπου αλλά και η σύνδεση της προσχολικής αγωγής με την κοινωνική δυναμική και την αξιολογία της ελληνικής κοινότητας.

My mom and dad gave me lots of love and affection, took care of all my basic needs and made sure I had plenty of toys to play with.

But they almost never told me what to do. Did not tell me how to behave or what to think. And did not tell me which philosophy or religion to believe in.

Arts in Health projects are growing in number in the UK. One such project, Singing Medicine (SM), is offered to children with short and long-term health care needs at a Children's Hospital in England as part of the Hospital's Play Department. In an environment where children can experience loss of control over decisions and restricted play experiences, musical games and activities offer children affordances for choice and agency. They can also benefit parents and wider family members. In contrast to previous quantitative studies that explored the transferrable benefits of music participation for children, this paper reports on a qualitative study involving semi-structured interviews with families of children with long-term health care needs (ages 3-14 years old). A new concept of 'The Hospital Family' is introduced from analysis of data. Family members valued relational aspects of the musical games and suggested that benefits lasted beyond the life of the child. These findings are explored in the context of ecological systems theory and Froebelian principles.

Chapter 11 of The World as Sculpture. Looks at the role played by sensory education (Froebel and Montessori) on modern art, and the development of artworks with variegated surfaces, such as Cubist collage, that might notionally appeal to the sense of touch and play. Brancusi, Jasper Johns, Marshall McCluhan (celebrates an age of touch and sculptural values), and Joseph Beuys are discussed.
