Fisheries Resources Management

The present study deals with ichthyofaunal diversity of Hiran-II reservoir, Gujarat. Sampling was carried out on monthly basis from January 2019 to February 2020. Total 23 species from 6 orders, 10 families and 19 genera were recorded during the present study. The range of water parameters such as temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen alkalinity and hardness were recorded and found suitable for fish production. Dominant family Cyprinidae with 12 species and 08 genera followed by Bagridae with 03 species 02 genera and other all families Claridea, Heteropneustidae, Cichilidae, Channidae, Gobiidae, Belonidae, Mastacembelidae, Poecilidae and Anguilidae contributed single species with single genera. Regarding conservation status out of 23 fish species 21 species least concern and 2 species near threaten. During month of December (post monsoon) highest fish diversity was found. Seasonal diversity indices such as Shannon-Wiener species diversity, Pielou's evenness, Margalef's species richness, were calculated based on the abundance of fish species to access the ecosystem health of Hiran-II reservoir. These studies will be help for the maintenance and regulation of Ichthyofauna and other aquatic ecosystem of the Hiran-II reservoir.

This report presents the results of a study on necessary demands of fishing communities in the territorial waters of Somaliland carried out in Somaliland at the month of November 2018. At 674 km, Somaliland has enough coastline. The fisheries law establishes that the territorial sea of Somaliland is 12 nautical miles, the country’s declared 100 m EEZ, The Somaliland Coastline extends from just east of Loyade (at 43° 15’ 45” E) on the Djibouti border to just east of Elayo (at 48° 53’ E) on the border with Somalia (which mostly runs at 49° E). and the main islands off the coast are Mait Island in the east and the Sadadin and Aibat Islands in the west. The relative abundant potential of Somaliland’s EEZ comes with a challenge. It makes patrolling and surveillance for fisheries enforcement difficult. Nevertheless, Somaliland has enormous potential to develop marine fisheries. Given political stability, these resources could have a positive economic impact on the country.

This paper reviews the major existing and potential threats of Ethiopian fishery and there possible mitigation. Ethiopia has a rich diversity of Ichthyo-fauna in its lakes, rivers and reservoirs, although they are poorly known. Seven major threats to lakes of the world include: accelerated Eutrophication, invasive species, toxic contamination, overfishing, water diversion, acidification, and climate change. However in Ethiopia there are a number of challenges which affect fishery such as overfishing, wetland degradation, Dam construction for the purpose of hydropower and irrigation, deforestation and Urbanization and industrialization. The possible mitigation of the above problems has management strategies should comprise both biophysical and socioeconomic aspects with emphasis on issues like adoption of watershed/ecosystem approach at policy level, integration of income generation in conservation activities, sharing of responsibility/benefits among local stakeholders, institutional strengthening for environmentally and socioeconomically sustainable development of lakes. To protect the major challenges of fresh water are watershed protection include: reducing pollution by silt load, preventing negative water level fluctuation, eliminating overexploitation of resources, mitigation of conflict of interest in the use of water and land resources (deforestation, water logging, flooding, overgrazing, population pressure, and degradation).

Indonesia’s Five-Year Development Plan (1993/94–1998/99) recognized the need to address depletion of coastal fisheries resources and pervasive poverty and social disadvantage among coastal communities. The objectives of the Coastal Community Development and Fisheries Resources Management Project were to (a) promote sustainable management of and conserve coastal fisheries resources by controlling destructive fishing practices and overfishing and improving fisheries resources and related habitats; and (b) reduce extensive poverty in coastal areas by providing opportunities to increase the incomes and improve the living standards of coastal communities. The Project was undertaken in four districts and one city, covering Bengkalis in Riau Province; Tegal City in Central Java; Trenggalek in East Java; Banyuwangi in East Java; and East Lombok in West Nusa Tenggara. The project scope included activities to (a) promote community-based coastal fisheries resource management; (b) increase the incomes and living standards of poor coastal communities through provision of appropriate opportunities and social infrastructure facilities; (c) rehabilitate facilities in selected fish landing centers to improve sanitation, the environment, and fish quality; and (d) strengthen the fisheries resource management capability of coastal communities, nongovernment organizations, and national and district agencies. This Project Completion Report Validation reassesses the performance of the Coastal Community Development and Fisheries Resources Management Project based largely on the Project Completion Report’s presentation of evidence and analysis but looks at lessons and recommendations from a wider and independent perspective. The Project Completion Report Validation also evaluates the quality of the Project Completion Report.

The present article summarizes the available management options and strategies for development of fisheries
& aquaculture in inland water bodies. Each section focuses on the key issues or parameters that are crucial from
fisheries and/or aquaculture point of view

The cichlid species Oreochromis niloticus, Sarotherondon galilaeus, and Coptodon zillii, which are among the most exploited resources in the small-scale fisheries of the Tono, Bontanga, and Golinga reservoirs in northern Ghana, were assessed based on length frequency samples. Growth, mortality, exploitation status, stock size, and relative yield per recruit reference points were determined using bootstrapping fish stock assessment (BFSA), a novel framework that allows for the estimation of uncertainties around the life-history parameters and reference levels (e.g., L∞, K, and F0.1). The results suggest that the 3 species studied are heavily exploited in all 3 reservoirs, but with no alarming signs of overexploitation.
