Design Review

Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI) launched the development project of two satellite laser ranging (SLR) systems in early 2008 after the government fund approval of the SLR systems in 2007. One mobile SLR system and one permanent SLR station will be developed with the completion of the project. The main objectives of these systems will be focused on the Space Geodetic researches. A system requirement review was held in the second half of the same year. Through the following system design review meeting and other design reviews, many unsolved technical and engineering issues would be discussed and resolved. However, the design of the mobile SLR system is a corner stone of whole project. The noticeable characteristics of Korea's first SLR system are 1) use of light weight main mirror, 2) design of compact optical assembly, 3) use of KHz laser pulse, 4) use of commercial laser generator, 5) remote operation capability, 6) automatic tracking, 7) state of art operation system, etc. In this paper, the major user requirement and pre-defined specification are presented and discussed.

„Augmented Reality“ und „Virtual Reality“, beim Gedanken an diese Begriffe sind Beispiele aus Kinofilmen wie „Iron Man“ oder „Terminator“ präsent. Der Einsatz in der Architektur und Stadtplanung liegt dagegen zunächst nicht direkt auf der Hand. Bei einer Betrachtung des Aufgabenprofils von Architekten und Planern, zu denen insbesondere die Teilbereiche Visualisierung und Kommunikation gehören, verwundert es dagegen nicht, dass die Potenziale dieser neuen Anwendungen zunehmend betrachtet werden. Insbesondere aufgrund der rasanten Entwicklungen im Smartphone-Bereich und somit der Verbreitung dieser Techniken in der Bevölkerung könnten sie eine völlig neue Art des Informationszugangs bieten.

Nachdem im theoretischen Teil dieses Beitrags die Grundzüge der Augmented Reality und die technischen Voraussetzungen zur Umsetzung von AR-Umgebungen erklärt werden, liegt der Schwerpunkt anschließend auf der Herausarbeitung der Möglichkeiten aktueller AR-Techniken. Diese werden anhand ausgewählter praktischer Beispiele aufgezeigt, die sich nach dem damit umsetzbaren Detaillierungsgrad der Darstellung aufgliedern und zunehmend steigern. Dabei wird nicht nur auf Beispiele aus dem Bereich der Augmented Reality-Methoden, sondern ebenso auf den Übergang zu Mixed Reality- und Virtual Reality-Verfahren eingegangen.

We describe a new interactive system for 3D design review, built to exploit the visual perception cue of motion parallax, in order to enhance shape perception and aesthetic evaluation. Traditional CAD applications typically use "bookmarked" static views for design evaluation. In our system, we replace static views with moving "shots" interspersed with cinematic visual transitions. Furthermore, users can access shots by picking object features on the 3D model, which invokes a spatial search over all shots, selects the ones deemed relevant to the feature, and plays back those shots. In this paper we describe the rationale behind this system, the main components, the implementation of the search technique, and the initial user evaluation of the system.

The design review forms a contiguous part of assessment in architectural education. This approach has been well documented in different parts of the world, investigating is strengths and weaknesses across the years, resulting in both praise and criticism in relation to the evolving nature of architectural education.  It is also increasingly evident that educational pedagogy is contextually based, and thus the one size fits all design review may not be appropriate for all. This is particularly in places where architectural pedagogy was imported wholesale from Europe directly, or via the United States, but never been localized, resulting in some challenges with the approaches in use, which typically cause tensions in their application, often forcing students to dispense with their own contextual experiences in order to participate in the ritualization of architectural education. The limited research on architectural education across sub-Saharan Africa, suggests that there are significant areas that need further investigation in order to fill the information gap in our appreciation of architectural education in this context. In an attempt to answer a key question: how do students perceive the design review in architectural education, a review of data gathered from a previous study of architectural education was made, seeking to mine the data from that study in order to provide answers to this question.  Supporting this study, was an extensive literature review on the design review, and it embedded processes. This paper reveals student’s views of the architectural design review, suggesting that there are significant tensions between instructors ad students, and that learning and values imparted through this assessment tool, as desirable outcomes of the process, are not as evident for students. The paper concludes with some suggestions for overcoming the challenges found.

Abstrak Poster merupakan salah satu media populer dalam desain komunikasi visual, poster juga marak sebagai media utama dalam berbagai macam pergerakan. Namun poster hanyalah suatu media, pesan dalam poster tersebut yang sebenarnya perlu menjadi perhatian. Selain iklan komersial poster juga sering digunakan sebagai iklan layanan masyarakat. Poster-poster Iklan layanan Masyarakat tersebut bertujuan untuk mengubah perilaku masyarakat melalui pesan yang ingin disampaikan oleh desainer poster tersebut. Salah satunya adalah poster Marlyn Fish Deep 2009 karya Sigit Setiawan dan Aditya Donny Suryawan. Karya tersebut berhasil menjuarai salah satu kompetisi poster bertajuk Deep Indonesia 2009, tujuan poster ini untuk mengubah perilaku masyarakat untuk lebih memperhatikan dan menjaga kelestarian terumbu karang di Indonesia. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk membahas poster menggunakan analisis tinjauan desain melalui empat tahap yakni, tahap deskripsi, tahap analisa, tahap interpretasi, dan tahap evaluasi. Tinjauan desain tersebut diharapkan dapat menjadi jembatan bagi pembaca dalam mengartikan karya poster tersebut secara lebih terperinci. Kata Kunci: Poster, Tinjauan Desain, Iklan Layanan Masyarakat. Abstract Poster is one of the popular media in visual communication design, poster also rife as the main media in a wide range of movement. But the poster is just a medium, the message in the poster that actually need to be a concern. Besides commercial advertising posters are also frequently used as public service advertising. Posters of the public service ads aimed at changing people's behavior through the message to be conveyed by the poster designer. One of them is the poster Marlyn Fish Deep 2009 by Sigit Setiawan and Aditya Donny Suryawan. The art work succesfull to the first winner on poster competition titled Deep Indonesia 2009, the purpose of the poster is to change the behavior of the public to pay more attention and to preserve the coral reefs in Indonesia. This study aims to discuss the poster using analytical design review through four stages namely, stage descriptions, the analysis stage, the stage of interpretation and evaluation phase. The design review is expected to be a bridge for the reader in interpreting the poster works in more detail.

Design review aims to improve the quality of urban settings, principally by seeking to influence the design of individual buildings positively during the planning approval stages of development. Design review systems were first set up in New Zealand in the mid-1990s in Wellington. The aims of design review are laudable; even if the process is not set up to secure the best possible design outcome it should be able to prevent the worst outrages, so as to ensure a minimal visual quality of streetscapes. However, does design review really achieve what it sets out to do? After a brief summary of design review practices, this article considers whether current design control practices in Wellington are helping to foster well-liked urban streetscapes. Using the results from a recent case study, comparing the aesthetic preferences of the public to those of professionals who participate in design control, the article notes where preferences overlap and where they are different. In the process, the characteristics of buildings and streetscapes that are considered positive and negative are identified. The article goes on to speculate how design review could be made to work more effectively in Wellington.

Form-based codes are just one area where a group of citizens, planners, neighbors and policy makers have inserted themselves into the traditional architectural design process in order to achieve a public good, like a better urban environment. While most performance criteria (sustainability, for example) are based on data, form-based codes, are derived primarily from conventional wisdom, handed down from designers and other experts who have observed successful and unsuccessful urban environments and drawn conclusions from what they have observed.

Software review is a necessity activity to build high reliability software in software development. In this paper, we experimentally analyze the difference in performance between two types of (checklist based) software reviews: design review and code review. If good code reviewers were also good at design review, then we should assign good code reviewers to the design review too. If not, that means these two reviews require different types of expertise. In our experiment, with ten review participants, we examined two hypotheses each related to the defect detection ratio and the required time to find a defect. As a result, we found that there was no correlation between two reviews, i.e. good code reviewers were not necessarily the good design reviewers. This suggests the need of a completely different training program for each review.

What does a student need to know to be a designer? Beyond a list of separate skills, what mindset does a student need to develop for designerly action now and into the future? In the excitement of the cognitive revolution, Simon proposed a way of thinking about design that promised to make it more manageable and cognitive: to think of design as a planning problem [11, 29]. Yet, as Suchman argued long ago [32], planning accounts may be applied to problems that are not at base accomplished by planning, to the detriment of design vision. This paper reports on a pedagogy that takes Suchman's criticism to heart and avoids dressing up design methods as more systematic and predictive than they in fact are. The idea is to teach design through exposure to not just one, but rather, many methods-that is, sets of rules or behaviors that produce artifacts for further reflection and development. By introducing a large number of design methods, decoupled from theories, models or frameworks, we teach (a) important crossmethodological regularities in competence as a designer, (b) that the practice of design can itself be designed and (c) that method choice affects design outcomes. This provides a rich and productive notion of design particularly necessary for the world of pervasive and ubiquitous computing.

This work analyzes the main problems related to the production of Virtual Reality (VR) models derived from CAD (Computer-Aided Design) models, which allows the user to interact with them in real-time and have an immersive sensation. The paper presents ENVIRON (ENvironment for VIRtual Objects Navigation), an application that was developed motivated by the necessity of using VR in large industrial engineering models coming from CAD tools.

The subdivision is orderly, neat and tree-lined. But ll we need do is leave the shady acres sign in the rear view mirror, drive to the main road, and we encounter a completely different world - chaotic, charmless and without the redemption of landscape or private domain. Here, no visible order prevails. Here is the hated symbol of sprawl, excess, corporate greed embodied in a world of shopping centres, fast food chains, downtrodden oriental buffets, gas stations, signs, parking lots, and roads without benefit of a curb, much less a tree.
