This study examines the role of an urban informal transport sub-sector; the motorcycle taxis (popularly called 'okada'), towards the provision of self-employment and income-generating opportunities for many of the urban unemployed in South West Nigeria. The data for the study was generated from a survey of 777 randomly selected auto cycle riders in two cities in Nigeria and the SPSS software aided data analyses. In addition to the descriptive analyses, two econometric models were specified and estimated using the OLS technique. The study revealed that the subsector is a high employer of young school leavers in the accident-prone job of okada riding. Earnings analyses show that 86% of the operators earn above the minimum wage level while human capital variables explain earnings distribution. Implications of the findings of the study point to the need for a more rigorous regulation of the sector to promote safety of operators and passengers.

Supershuttle taxi is a transport company that operates taxis from airports to homes and hotel destinations of individual customers. This is a franchise of a transport company called blue van in the United States, serving most of the airports. To manage this form of business, the company must be in a position to enable the customer to book for transport, and be responsive to customer’s orders in time. This is mainly because customers book the taxi as they are travelling and any delays with would highly cost the customer as the air tickets are paid in advance. To meet these deadlines, the companies require a high level of management and customer care. There was a case of delay with supershuttle taxi on 1 June, when it failed to serve Geoff and Marie Southern in New York. This paper will analyse the situation, assess the prevailing problem and suggest recommendations on how to avoid such cases.

Estudio de la regulación en España de la prestación de transporte que realizan tradicionalmente los taxis y que, en la actualidad, cada vez más, también los VUTCs (Uber, Cabify, etc.). El trabajo analiza las razones de la reserva tradicional al sector público de esta actividad económica y si subsisten o no hoy en día las razones que justificaban esa publicación, concluyendo que no y que hay que liberalizar poco a poco el sector, homogeneizando la regulación para taxis y VTCs y dejando como única posibilidad para la limitación del número de licencias los problemas de congestión y de contaminación.
