The group bought its own property, published its own periodicals, and sponsored indigenous Bible women around the world. Inspired by the New England women's example, women across the country founded independent regional branches that collaborated and grew into a worldwide movement.

Charles J. Rzepka. Selected Studies in Romantic and American Literature, History, and Culture: Inventions and Interventions. Burlington, VT: Ashgate, 2010. Pp. 287. $99.95. As many of us no doubt have mentioned to our students, the diversity of thought that existed before the mid-nineteenth-century differentiation of disciplines was a significant reason for the vitality of intellectual production in the Romantic era. Cutting-edge science informed by microscopes and electricity experiments coexisted with Shelley's idealism and abstraction; philology, linguistics, and religion were all part of Coleridge's metaphysical stew; and the many different and often unrelated research and speculations that filled the pages of contemporary periodicals were both destined for and emanated from a motley intellectual arena that included amateurs as well as what would be recognized today as specialists or professionals. A similarly exhilarating mix of topics appears in Selected Studies in Romantic and American Literature, History, and Culture: Inventions and Interventions, a new volume that reprints some of Charles Rzepka's best essays of the past twenty years. In articles ranging from the Romantic canon to Poe, Freud, Elizabeth Bishop, Charlie Chan and the Wizard of Oz, Inventions and Interventions annals a scholarly career equally as distinguished for its eclecticism as for its accomplishment. One of the obvious pleasures of such a volume is the chance to track Rzepka's most important critical contributions, such as the recurring discussion of gifts and transactional relationships (featured in three articles on Wordsworth and De Quincey) that would culminate in Rzepka's illluminating Sacramental Commodities. The diversity of the topics also signals the interest in detection and crime narratives that have extended Rzepka's work beyond the geographical and temporal borders of British Romanticism, and which seem to lead his current interests (the three most recent essays are those on Poe, Charlie Chan, and Godwin). Indeed, in its astute synthesis of genre criticism, regional history, and Asian American studies, Rzepka's essay on Charlie Chan is particularly impressive. The essay, a revisionary interpretation which rejects orientalist charges for the much maligned character and instead argues for his generic and historical significance at a time when strictures against Asian immigration were extreme, anticipates Yunte Huang's much celebrated current book (Charlie Chan: The Untold Story of the Honorable Detective and his Rendezvous with American History) by several years. Thus, while the topics of some of the later essays may at first seem surprising for Romantic scholars, one thing that the volume's collection helps reveal is the close connection between space, place, identity, and power that has always driven Rzepka's scholarship, and how his Romantic training shaped these more current interests. However, to suggest that the merits of Inventions and Interventions lies only in intellectual biography is to do the book a disservice, as it deflects attention from the conceptual achievements accrued by this compilation. A major attraction of the volume is its glimpse into detection as a critical practice, which only Rzepka's idiosyncratic mix of Romantic sensibilities and twentieth-century historical practice can demonstrate. Throughout all of the essays, Rzepka's facility for deductive analysis is repeatedly on display, as he poses scholarly queries, considers existing criticism (usually on a case-by-case basis), brings to bear historical context and contemporary texts (often based on the most tenuous or fleeting of coincidences), and works through critical problems by painstaking close reading (often facilitated by a colloquial restatement of key textual passages) and usually aided by sequences of rhetorical questions. …

This paper presents a novel technique of human emotion recognition using the audio modality for the speaker-independent task. In order to achieve a high emotion classification performance a standard set of audio features were extracted. The feature selection was performed using the Plus l-Take Away r algorithm based on Bhattacharyya distance criterion. The feature selection was followed by feature reduction using PCA and LDA, and classification using the Gaussian and SVM classifiers. The emotion classification performance better or comparable to state-of-the art techniques and humans were achieved on the standard Berlin emotional speech database.

The purpose of this research proposal is to identify an alternative source of fuel, in specific, refuse derived fuel, which will power the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority’s (MBTA) buses. Our group identifies the growing problem of greenhouse gas emissions as a result of nonrenewable resources and fossil fuels; the most prevalent of these fuels are currently diesel and compressed natural gas. As members of the Boston University Environmental Defense Council, we propose our plan to the MBTA with the hopes of revamping a large portion of the transit system. We assess the state of the current MBTA fleet, as well as how our proposal would affect costs, transit, and incentives. We use existing refuse derived fuel (RDF) facilities as models to compare with the city of Boston, as it is a relatively new source of energy production. The use of RDF will effectively replace the current method of generating electricity through the burning of natural gas and will only affect battery electric and hybrid buses. Additionally, the city of Boston can save millions of dollars per year on waste management. Our calculations determine that the decrease in future energy and healthcare costs as a result of RDF will offset the initial price. Furthermore, our group relates our research with several interdisciplinary studies: humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences.

Abstract The recently discovered human remains from Callao Cave, northern Luzon, Philippines securely date the migration of hominins into the Philippines to ca. 70 kya (thousands of years ago). The direct route to reach Luzon from the Asian mainland is via Borneo, Palawan, through Mindoro and into Luzon. Our research focuses on Mindoro Island as a potential stepping stone to the main Philippine Archipelago. While Palawan and Luzon have produced evidence for early human occupation, no systematic research on the prehistory of Mindoro has been conducted until now. We report on recent archaeological investigations at the Bubog rockshelter sites on the small island of Ilin just off the coast of Mindoro. The excavations produced evidence of stratified sequences of human habitation at the two rockshelter sites in the form of dense shell middens that date to ca. 11 kya onwards. They provide direct evidence on how variability in landscape formation, sea levels, and landmass during the terminal Pleistocene and early Holocene influenced the behavior of early human populations. Numerous species of molluscs were recorded and provisional results indicate variations in the invertebrate faunas throughout the stratigraphic sequences, resulting from sea level rise and the establishment of coral reefs between Ilin and Mindoro at the end of the Pleistocene. Our results contribute substantially to our understanding of the processes of human island adaptation, complement ongoing research into Island Southeast Asia’s paleogeography, and enhance current knowledge of prehistoric subsistence strategies across the region.

Social effectiveness continues to play a critical role in recovery of people with serious mental illness (SMI), with greater social effectiveness predicting many positive life outcomes. Despite the abundance of literature supporting the relationship between perceptions and behavior, little is known about predictors of perceived social effectiveness of individuals with SMI. The purpose of this study is to examine the predictors of perceived social effectiveness of individuals with SMI. Cross-sectional data of 192 participants with SMI recruited from four psychiatric rehabilitation clubhouses in 2 states in the South and Midwest regions of the United States were used for this study. “The Joy of Exile,” Rojas’s painting installation festooned with wall drawings, has the quality of a fever dream: roiling color and gesture. Violent imagery leavened with pop culture references. Incantatory text.

The piece tells the tale of migration. Rojas calls it “a celebration of human mobility.” The painter was born in El Salvador, and his mother moved the family to San Francisco when he was small.

The installation doesn’t take for granted the devastation of being uprooted. The first image is of a corn kernel before its propulsive pop.

Rojas’s paintings sprang from his sketchbooks, where he poured his art before he had a studio. “This gave birth to that,” he says, showing off a sketchbook version of the painting “Son,” which features a broken tree, a clown swinging on gymnastic rings, Mayan numerology, and Central American birds.

“Some of it is ambiguous for me,” Rojas admits. “There are moments in the creation where I’ve completely submitted to the process. The challenge has always been to put the books on the canvas. I think I’ve arrived at that.”
