Anthropology of Death & Burial

The purpose of the article is to develop two aspects of the Wayuu’s social life such as death and its rites. Death is part of a symbolic universe that is part of the meaning of life for the Wayuu. From which their experience and existence are built. The first and second funeral are one of the most important events in this society that indicate rituals and specific behaviors to perform in those who participate in these events. The method used was the ethnography from itself, because the author is part of the Wayuu people and from that position she engages in a dialogue with the different social actors. The author participated in rituals of first and second funerals for several years. It is concluded that living and dying form a continuum that does not end with physical death, enters a cycle that does not end and goes from the individual to the collective.

เรื่องราวอันเป็นยิ่งใหญ่ของลัทธิวีรบุรุษ (the cult of heroes) ปรากฏขึ้นตั้งแต่สมัยกรีกโบราณ 
ถือเป็นหนึ่งในคุณสมบัติที่โดดเด่นที่สุดของศาสนากรีกโบราณ ในภาษาฮีบรู  (Homeric Greek) คำว่า  “hero" หมายถึง มนุษย์ที่กำลังสู้รบกันในช่วงสงครามทรอย (Trojan War) ต่อมาสมัยประวัติศาสตร์คำดังกล่าวหมายถึง “ผู้ตายที่ได้รับยกย่องบูชาบริเวณหลุมฝังศพของเขา” หรือ “วิหารที่สักการะบูชาอันเนื่องด้วยชื่อเสียงของเขาในขณะที่มีชีวิต” หรือ “ตายในลักษณะที่ผิดปกติ อันยังผลให้มีพลังอำนาจในการสนับสนุนและปกป้องสิ่งมีชีวิต” กล่าวได้ว่า วีรบุรุษเป็นอะไรที่มากกว่ามนุษย์ แต่น้อยกว่าพระเจ้า รวมถึงรูปลักษณ์ของสิ่งเหนือธรรมชาติ (supernatural figures) ต่าง ๆ ได้ถูกรวมเข้าเป็นกลุ่มวีรบุรุษ ซึ่งเมื่อเปรียบเทียบกับพระเจ้าแล้วยังถือว่าน้อยกว่ามาก โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งในกรณีของเฮราคลีส (Heracles หรือ Heraklesในภาษากรีก และ Hercules ในภาษาโรมัน) ที่โดดเด่นที่สุดแม้อาจจะผิดปกติไปจากพระเอกทั่วไปก็ตาม อย่างน้อย เริ่มต้นจากบทกวีของโฮเมอร์ที่ให้ภาพของตัวละครที่เป็นเวรเป็นกรรมบางอย่างจงใจเลือกชื่อเสียงและเกียรติยศแทนการพักผ่อนเพื่อประโยชน์ในการดำรงชีวิตในความทรงจำของคนรุ่นต่อ ๆ ไป วีรบุรุษยุคแรก เช่น Achilles เป็นตำนาน เป็นประวัติศาสตร์สืบเนื่องตั้งแต่สมัยโรมัน ถ้าพิจารณาว่า แหล่งข้อมูลโบราณเหล่านี้แสดงให้เห็นว่า การเสียสละอย่างรุนแรงในองศาที่แตกต่างกันย่อมเป็นแรงบันดาลใจต่อลัทธิวีรบุรุษ ขณะที่ต้นแบบคลาสสิกนี้เป็นสามัญชนปรากฏไม่ซ้ำกัน ตั้งแต่สมัยโบราณไม่มีแนวคิดเกี่ยวกับชีวิตหลังความตายเป็นรางวัลและระบบการลงโทษ อาจจำแนกแยกแยะได้เป็นกลุ่มที่เกี่ยวข้องกับการเสียสละต่อสู้อันได้แรงบันดาลใจทางศาสนา, นักสู้ชาวมุสลิม เช่นเดียวกับวีรบุรุษสงครามทั้งหมดในประวัติศาสตร์ การสักการะบูชาวีรบุรุษอยู่ภายใต้การควบคุมของกองทัพหรือองค์กรทางทหารที่พิสูจน์แล้วว่าเชื่อถือได้ (Cook, 2005, 2007; Fenech, 1997)

ในไทย “มรณสักขีแห่งสองคอน” นับเป็นคริสต์ศาสนิกชนนิกายโรมันคาทอลิกชาวไทยกลุ่มแรกที่ได้ 7 คน ได้รับการยกย่องจากคริสตจักรโรมันคาทอลิกว่าเป็นมรณสักขี จากกรณีที่ทั้ง 7 คน ถูกตำรวจยิงเสียชีวิตเพราะไม่ยอมเลิกนับถือศาสนาคริสต์ และได้รับการประกาศเป็น “บุญราศี” พร้อมกัน โดยสมเด็จพระสันตะปาปาจอห์น ปอลที่ 2 ณ มหาวิหารนักบุญเปโตร นครรัฐวาติกัน เมื่อวันที่ 22 ตุลาคม พ.ศ. 2532 เป็นต้นมา ปัจจุบัน “สักการสถาน พระมารดาแห่งมรณสักขีวัดสองคอน”  โบสต์คริสต์วัดสองคอน ตั้งอยู่ริมฝั่งโขง ณ บ้านสองคอน ตำบลโป่งขาม อำเภอหว้านใหญ่ จังหวัดมุกดาหาร เป็นพื้นที่สำคัญทางคริสต์ศาสนาของไทย ที่มีความหมายและนัยสำคัญ ประหนึ่งอนุสรณ์สถานให้รำลึกถึงเหตุการณ์ประวัติศาสตร์ความแตกต่างขัดแย้งทางศาสนาความเชื่อของผู้คนภายใต้ร่มเงาทางการเมืองในอดีตของภูมิภาคอินโดจีน
นอกจากหน้าหนึ่งของประวัติศาสตร์ของคริสต์ศาสนาในไทยแล้ว เรื่องราวของ มรณสักขีแห่งสองคอน ถือเป็นบทเรียนสังคมวัฒนธรรมอันเกี่ยวข้องกับมานุษยวิทยาว่าด้วยความตายโดยตรง หากความตายของวีรบุรุษได้รับการยกย่องเชิดชูแล้ว การพลีชีพของบุญราศีแห่งสองคอนย่อมไม่อาจได้รับการกล่าวถึง และยกย่องเช่นกัน มรตฺ’ ซีน  วารสารห้องเรียนมานุษยวิทยาว่าด้วยความตาย ฉบับ สองคอน เป็นบทสะท้อนจากภาคสนามของการศึกษาทางมานุษยวิทยาในหลากแง่มุม ไม่เพียงเท่านั้น ยังมีบทความอันเกี่ยวเนื่องกับความตาย ในเชิงปรัชญา จิตวิทยา ภาพยนตร์ งานศิลปะ ที่แสดงนัยยะสำคัญของความตายในหลากมิติทางสังคมวัฒนธรรมอีกด้วย

The identification of deviant burials as those of ‘vampires’ is a feature of excavated skeletons from sites across Eastern, Central and Southern Europe as well as the Balkans. Based on a close reading of historic and folkloric sources researchers have sought to match features of excavated sites with narrative descriptions drawn from vampire legend and myth. This study critically reviews the recent claims based on sites in Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Greece, Italy, Poland and Slovakia. Whilst it is found that there was a widespread belief in vampires across Europe, it is argued that it is difficult to make absolute claims for ‘vampire’ burials on archaeological grounds as in most cases there are alternate and equally compelling interpretations of the data.

The essay analyzes the project of maintaining the body of V. I. Lenin in the Mausoleum in Moscow for the past ninety years, focusing on the unique biological science that developed around this project, and the unexpected political role this body has performed.

This article explores how across the island of New Guinea, barkcloth has functioned as a mediator between humans, their existence, and their environment. Revisiting origin myths and various uses and meanings of barkcloth in New Guinea, it is shown how barkcloth is intimately connected with human ontology, and in particular with human reproduction and death. Focusing on barkcloth as permeable and perishable substance, the paper elucidates how barkcloth effectively shapes, contains and alters human beings. Highlighting the intimate relationship between barkcloth and people’s existence, the paper also discusses some of the changes brought about by colonialism, logging and climate change, and how this might affect both the significance and future of barkcloth.

Mărturiile vechi-testamentare despre moarte, alături de cele extra-biblice sunt dezvoltate şi în această a doua parte a studiului cu alte aspecte precum necromanţia, cultul morţilor, nemurirea, învierea, judecata. Sunt aduse înainte cele mai importante mărturii scrise începând cu Septuaginta, Biblia ebraică, Iosif Flaviu, diferite scrieri ale Iudaismului, Sfinţii Părinţi şi diverse mărturii arheologice. Numitorul comun al celor mai multe dintre el e faptul că, fie că vorbim de lumea biblică, fie de cea din afară, moartea nu a fost înţeleasă, precum în modernism, drept ceva inexplicabil, sau care încheie viaţa pe pământ, ci ca o trecere în viaţa fără de sfârşit.

* Studiul a fost redactat în aprilie 2009 ca parte dintr-un proiect publicistic rămas nefinalizat. Cu acordul autorului, a servit ca o bază bibliografică pentru studiul Teodorei TECU-LESCU, "Perspectiva biblică asupra practicilor funerare în Israelul antic", în Studii Teologice, Articolul prezintă generalităţi asupra concepţiei vechi-testamentare despre moarte şi îngropare. Plecându-se de la elemente de antropologie biblică, este prezentată apoi credinţa legată de şeol ca locaş al morţilor. Pentru fundamentarea grijii faţă de cei morţi, sunt discutate texte biblice, dar şi mărturii arheologice. Este important că prima atestare arheologică a unui text biblic provine tocmai dintr-un context funerar.

Since the beginning of the 21st century, the deaths of migrants have become a regular occurrence in southern Arizona where an average of 170 bodies are recovered from the desert each year. This dissertation examines the causes and effects of death and disappearance along the U.S.-Mexico border, seeking to address the contradiction present in the fact that thousands of people have died or disappeared in one of the world’s most heavily surveilled landscapes. It interrogates the ways in which the dead, the missing, and their families are simultaneously erased and exposed in a biopolitical process that has powerful implications beyond the space of the borderlands. The observations for this dissertation are drawn from nearly a decade of both ethnographic research and applied humanitarian assistance in the field of forensic human identification, primarily at the Pima County Office of the Medical Examiner, in Tucson, Arizona. Although the majority of migrant fatalities have been determined by the medical examiner to be accidental, resulting from exposure to the elements or unknown causes, a historical analysis reveals the violent nature of these deaths and disappearances, which are a structured result of U.S. border and immigration policies. From their homes to their destinations, migrants in the Americas face a particular kind of structural violence and social invisibility that is revealed when they disappear at the border. This disappearance is then made more thorough by the structured lack of access for families of the missing to services to assist them in their search. Practices of care, whether occurring within families of the missing and dead, during the desert crossing itself, or in the forensic work to identify the dead, powerfully contest the invisibility and erasure experienced by migrants in the Americas today.

Zbornik Antropologija smrti II, Sahrana, grob i groblje predstavlja drugi zbornik s antropološkim tekstovima o smrti. Pogreb kao centralni ritual smrti obrađen je sa više aspekata i u više sociokulturnih okolnosti. Analiza
tradicionalne sahrane u tekstu Mirjane Prošić daje osnovne postavke analitičkog postupka koji se potom, manje ili više transparentno, primenjivao u mnogim radovima o sahrani. Društvene okolnosti i značenja, koja se pridaju u trenucima
sahranjivanja političara, posebno su privukla pažnju jer simbolički oslikavaju ono što se na da videti u javnim diskursima. Sahrane vladara i lidera kao što su Petar Prvi Karađorđević (Tatjana Mikulić), Aleksandra Karađorđevića i Zorana Đinđića (Todor Kuljić gost-sociolog i opet Tatjana Mikulić), zatim smrt i sahrana Slobodana Miloševića i poređenje smrti i sahrane Josipa Broza, Zorana Đinđića i
drugijh javnih ličnosti (u dva teksta Aleksandre Pavićević) predstavljaju istraživanje smrti i sahrane u modernom dobu. Grobovi, grobnice i groblja su predmet dva rada - o velikim grobnicama na seoskim grobljima (Ivan Kovačević) i o savremenim obeležjima mesta smrti tj. novim krajputašima (Danilo Trbojević).

La mort d’autrui est une épreuve que les communautés humaines ont dû apprendre à surmonter dès les premiers temps de l’Humanité. Ce travail est une exploration des différentes réponses proposées par l’homme face au problème de la perte de l’autre à travers les gestes effectués sur le corps mort, depuis les soins thanatopraxiques jusqu’aux funérailles en plusieurs temps ou la création de reliques.

La manipulation post-mortem des corps fournit régulièrement à l’archéologue des “dépôts secondaires” ou des dépôts primaires ayant subi des manipulations anthropiques post-dépositionnelles. Ces dépôts impliquent une gestion complexe et planifiée du processus funéraire et, en général, des gestes / pratiques / cérémonies en plusieurs épisodes.

Cette thèse propose un éclaircissement des concepts et de la nomenclature liés à ces dépôts spécifiques. Une analyse transchronologique et transculturelle d’études de cas archéologiques et ethnologiques nous permet d’éclairer ces phénomènes mortuaires complexes dans leur dimension anthropologique.

Human remains resulting from sophisticated mortuary treatments represent a preferred information source about the organization of societies and about the belief systems of ancient people. Thereby, on the archaeological field, secondary deposits, sacred artefacts made of humain bones or dismembered burials emerge as precious raw material in order to reconstruct gestures, practices and finally the symbolic discourse built around those dead who are selected to become particular protective entities, perhaps Ancestors.

This work includes the study of double-funeral ceremonies and manipulations of human bones in funerary or ritual contexts but also complicated pre-funeral treatments (exposure, dismemberment, mummification) in a transcultural and transchronological perspective. Human remains and spatial data from archaeological contexts have been analyzed using a bioanthropological and traceological approach in order to reconstruct complex mortuary operating sequences. An ethnoarcheological study on multiple-steps funerals has been performed in order to interpret archaeological remains.

Esta comunicación quiere poner de manifiesto el carácter polisémico de los cementerios patrimoniales tomando como ejemplo el Cementerio Municipal de Valencia, dado que es en este tipo de cementerios y puede que solo en ellos donde se den cita los diferentes significados.
Se muestra el cementerio en su vertiente de jardín arcádico y su discurso filosófico y reflexivo sobre la muerte, ejemplificando con los historicismos en arquitectura, escultura y relieves en lápidas que acogen, desde la imagen hasta el texto, esa misma arcadia y que también aparece en la representación de la muerte en la joyería y conecta con el concepto de ruina y su valor romántico.
Otro aspecto de él emana de la fragmentación fotográfica, descontextualizando la escultura y explorando la voluptuosidad del diálogo Eros-Tanatos. La fotografía de los medallones esmaltados testigos de una época, a la vez que registra algunos ejemplos post mortem.
El cementerio como portador de kitsch y donde confluyen los caminos tanto del sentimiento como de la sentimentalidad, de la grandilocuencia y de lo naif.
Para finalizar con una mirada hacia el futuro haciendo mención a los cementerios verticales y al inexorable destino de los patrimoniales si no se hace algo por su conservación.

Since the advent of European explorers, missionaries, traders and subsequent colonialism, Melanesian material culture has lived a double life (Thomas 2013: xi). On the one hand, indigenous material culture remained significant in local lives, despite many objects being abandoned, replaced by Western products, or destroyed by colonial agents. On the other hand, Melanesian objects were systematically collected by these same colonial agents, who included colonial officers, missionaries, traders and
anthropologists. However, Melanesians have always had a complex relationship with things, which calls into question Western dichotomies between objects and subjects, keeping and giving, creating and destroying. Melanesian persons, it has been argued, are constituted out of things that are transacted as gifts (Strathern 1988, 1991; Wagner 1991). These ‘things’ may be objects such as pearl shells, beads, pigs or barkcloth, but also human blood, semen or nurture. The intimate relations between people and
things are reworked in life- cycle rituals, such as initiations and mortuary rites, where objects are not only exchanged and given away, but also destroyed.

Dílem Calon-Welten: Eine Ethnografie über das Leben, Sterben und Weiterleben bei Ciganos in Brasilian Márcio Vilar dokazuje, že studium způsobu, jakým se lidé vyrovnávají se smrtí, umožňuje dobrý vhled do sociálního uspořádání a kultury dané komunity. Ve své knize se rozhodl zachytit „představy, které jsou základem pro způsob, jakým se někteří kalonští Ciganos (Romové) v Brazílii vyrovnávají se smrtí, a dále důsledky, které má jejich vztah ke smrti pro utváření a formování jejich vlastního světa i osobnosti jednotlivce jako sociální bytosti jednak ve vztahu
k většinové komunitě, která Kalony obklopuje, ale také v jejím rámci a paralelně k  ní“ (s. 22). Postupně odhaluje, jak vzájemně propojený je způsob, kterým si Kalonové utvářejí svůj svět i  osobnost: „Život, smrt i  posmrtný život každého Kalona jsou vždy určitou místní aktualizací celého kalonského světa, který se tak stává specificky ovlivněný a určený kalonstvím. Svět a člověk nemohou existovat odděleně“ (s. 298).

Abstract
The area of Kymissala on the southwest coast of Rhodes is of great archaeological interest, as it conceals a large number of important archaeological sites belonging to the lesser known ancient deme of the Rhodian countryside, the deme of Kymissaleis. The region is also of exceptional environmental and ecological importance, as it has a particular biodiversity and is protected by the European ‘Natura 2000’ network of nature protection areas.
Kymissala has systematically been researched during the past 10 years by the Kymissala Archaeological Research Project (KARP) inaugurated by the Department of Mediterranean Studies and the Ephorate of Antiquities of the Dodecanese in 2006.
The research, escaping from its narrow academic and archaeological context and exploiting the comparative advantage of the region, may –and should– inter alia, intervene in a mild and sustainable manner in the promotion of the archaeological site of Kymissala. Its ultimate goal is to promote the antiquities of the area, its educational value and its historical and cultural continuity within a protected natural environment, in the context of an ecological-archaeological park.
Under the title Kymissala: Archaeology – Education – Sustainability, fourteen original studies have been published, constituting the first complete presentation of the area of Kymissala and the work in progress, after ten years of systematic research, in terms of Archaeology, Education and Sustainable Development.

Dogs were commonly buried individually upon death but sometimes jointly interred with people. The oldest known example of the latter, from Bonn-Oberkassel in Germany, serves as a window for viewing this phenomenon. The common practice of regarding dogs as much like people underlies these occurrences. Joint dog- human interment took place in many regions over thousands of years. This widespread practice prompts the evaluation of specific examples. Recent information from Bonn-Oberkassel allows for a more comprehensive assessment of what took place there, though the circumstances surrounding the deaths at issue remain elusive. Collectively, this widespread practice illustrates how people not only incorporated dogs into their lives but into their own deaths as well.

In questo volume l’autore – uno dei massimi studiosi di
storia pontifi cia – percorre l’intera storia dell’elezione e
della morte dei papi, dai secoli iniziali del loro “vicariato”
fi no alla metà del Quattrocento, rileggendo di prima mano
l’insieme delle fonti presentandole in un racconto unitario
e completo.
E il lettore scopre che elementi oggi molto noti – come l’annuncio
del papa appena eletto, i rituali funebri pontifi ci che
durano nove giorni e la stessa idea del conclave inteso come
“clausura” dei cardinali – arrivano tardi: ad esempio il conclave
non esisteva prima del 1274.
Ciò signifi ca che questa millenaria vicenda normativa, rituale
e simbolica non è stata affatto lineare, ma si è costruita
via via, nel corso dei secoli, per ragioni che non si comprendono
se non vengono calate nei vari contesti istituzionali,
ecclesiologici e politici.

Повреждение тел определенных категорий покойников было распространено в защитных целях у восточных славян, эта практика хорошо известна и по материалам Волыни и Прикарпатья. Такими покойниками были «нечистые» или «заложные» покойники, которые могли навредить живым. Одной из категорий «нечистых» покойников были насильственно умерщвленные. В статье проводятся параллели между манипуляциями с телами «нечистых» покойников и расправой с жертвами мести, сопровождаемой повреждениями тел убитых (убийство виновных в ослеплении князя Василько Ростиславича).
In some towns of South Russia findings of bodies with postmortem damages are known. But historical and ethnographic material shows that bodies' injury was common as for some categories of decedents, especially in Volhynia and Subcarpathians. Those decedents were «zalozhniye dead» (vampires, living dead), who could harm living. One of categories of «zalozhniye dead» were those who were violently killed. In the article appears some parallels between manipulations with «zalozhniye deads'» bodies and examples of massacres with sacrifices of revenge, accompanied with postmortem bodies' injury (revenge for prince Vasilko Rostislavovitch).

This paper examines cases of suicide in rural Greece where the deceased have been provided with new affective narratives that detract from the circumstances of death. Living relatives redirect public attention away from the social taboo of suicide by reconfiguring affective stories that appeal to the local tool-kit for dealing with unexpected death. Resultantly, the reputation of the family remains untainted by the connotations of immorality and insanity that suicide carries. Grabbing public attention, the affective story rouses sympathy for the victim and their family, whilst cultivating abhorrence towards a culprit, representing a final mark of respect to the dead person.

Employing two case studies from different spheres of anthropological practice, we argue that a narrative approach provides productive analytical ground for the study of Western death. It has been argued that narratives are attempts to create a presence to what is absent and truth to what is imagined and forgotten. Inverting this thesis, in this paper, we investigate how narratives can create absence where there is presence and ignite imagination and speculation where there is truth. Arguing that death 'invites a story', we examine cases which are as much about creative orchestration of human ingenuity as of meaningful accounts of epistemological meta-language.

In the present as in the past, the dead have been deployed to promote visions of identity, as well as ostensibly wider human values. Through a series of case studies from ancient Egypt through prehistoric, historic, and present-day Europe, this book discusses what is constant and what is locally and historically specific in our ways of interacting with the remains of the dead, their objects, and monuments. Postmortem interaction encompasses not only funerary rituals and intergenerational engagement with forebears, but also concerns encounters with the dead who died centuries and millennia ago. Drawing from a variety of disciplines such as archaeology, bioarchaeology, literary studies, ancient Egyptian philology and literature, and sociocultural anthropology, this volume provides an interdisciplinary account of the ways in which the dead are able to transcend temporal distances and engender social relationships. In this introduction, we highlight some unifying aspects of this book.

This piece is on the cemetery for the "unknown," for the "anonymous" (kimsesizler mezarligi), where the bodies of trans people, victims of honor crimes, premature babies, Kurdish guerillas, unclaimed refugees, and homeless people are buried together in Turkey. It exposes a story of dispossession that denies the marginalized a social afterlife entrenched in a hegemonic spatial and temporal order. It marks the repeated eviction of the marginalized from social life at the moment and in the aftermath of death. At the cemetery for the anonymous, transgressive death and its afterlives translate into a mortal topography of margins.

Corteges and tea: why we 'do death well'

The people of Ireland. as this book attests, "do death well": both the lead-up to it, and the aftermath. In this rich collection of essays, we run the gamut of that entire collective experience, from ancient times to modern practices—many of which, of course, are carrying on time-honoured traditions.

The superbly (and appropriately) named editor Salvador Ryan begins with some sweet-natured and warmly witty personal memories of death. His recollection of high-speed rosaries, funeral corteges and endless cups of tea at the removal will strike a familiar chord with everyone who grew up in Ireland in the last 50 years.

Then follows a superb collection of 75 pieces, with contributions from undertakers and hospice carers, storytellers and artists, religious Leaders and academics of all stripes. The beauty of a book like this is its huge diversity: there's something of interest here for literally all readers.

For myself, and this is solely down to personal taste, your choices will be different, I was most taken with Catherine Swift's piece on ogham stones: Bernadette Williams' chilling (and strangely moving, even at this distance) account of the Black Death laying waste to Kilkenny in 1348; Patricia Lysaght's essay on banshees — is there anything more Irish than that? — and Nollaig Ó Muiraíle's amusingly grisly litany of medieval deaths in battle.

I also enjoyed Kevin Myers' piece on the Irish use of humour in treating death, which contains a story about a dying man angrily abusing everyone standing around his bedside - an action which they found hilarious and completely appropriate to the man and the circumstances.

An exemplary collection. then, with some lovely pictorial accompaniment and an extensive list of suggested further reading. I'd especially recommend it for anyone interested in history, particularly social/cultural,and the anthropological quirks of the Irish race.
