Inuit are seeking to engage the Québec government in the development of new policies to support change. As Inuit with special rights and privileges set out in the JBNQA [James Bay and Northern Québec Agreement] and then elaborated in subsequent agreements, they must also be afforded every possibility to protect and promote their culture and way of life and be provided with every opportunity to participate in the economy of the region.-Makivik Corporation et al., Parnasimautik Consultation Report CONTACT Nadine C. This article provides an understanding of the goals and operational procedures of current cruise ship operators in Nunavut and gives insight into the policies necessary to effectively manage cruise ship tourism in Nunavut. The exploratory research found that cruise tourism in Nunavut is perceived as a safe and economically viable industry. However, a number of important issues emerged: 1) the need for policies and guidelines to aid in the management of parks and protected areas in Nunavut; 2) the desire for unity across the Arctic cruise ship tourism industry; 3) the requirement for greater government awareness and assistance, and 4) the need for more research particularly from local perspectives.

The predominantly Inuit Arctic region of Nunavik in the Province of Québec, Canada, currently needs to address major challenges and opportunities. The region needs to develop more employment and wealth creation opportunities without sacrificing the vital land-based subsistence sector that provides food security, sustains cultural identity and provides social and economic stability. A decision about a new direction needs to be taken soon as major mining projects are developing at a rapid pace. In this paper we first assess existing socioeconomic and living conditions data to evaluate the state of social well-being in the region. In addition we report and analyse information from an economic forum in Kuujjuaq, Nunavik in April 2010. The purpose of the forum was to provide an opportunity for regional and local stakeholders to obtain information on specific economic opportunities for Nunavik and to discuss their merit for the communities. Based on our data evaluation and the outcomes at the forum we identify a possible sustainable development feedback envisioning process and discuss possible sustainable development directions for Nunavik.

Every second year the Greenlandic Business Association hosts a two-day conference entitled “Future Greenland” in Nuuk. The main theme of this year’s conference was “Growth and Welfare – Scenarios for the Development of Greenland.” The conference had more than 400 participants – mostly from Denmark and Greenland – but the format of the conference seems to be opening up for international business partners. This year’s conference facilitated a dialogue in Greenlandic, Danish and English. Next year even more interpreters will be needed. To strengthen the outreach, the conference was broadcasted live via KNR (Kalaallit Nunaata Radioa – Greenlandic Broadcasting Corporation) to the rest of Greenland which made the conference even more important as a platform for dialogue on the future of Greenland.

who worked so hard on my behalf, for allowing me to assist them in their oral history project and enabling me to travel to places that I could not otherwise have visited. I also want to thank all the people in their Iqaluit, Cambridge Bay, Rankin Inlet, and Ottawa offices who were so generous with their time and resources.
