In recent decades, sport has become an increasingly important path of mobility for Pacific Islander men, positioning them within interlinked local, state, regional, and global sporting economies. Players from the Pacific (particularly in rugby, rugby league, soccer, and gridiron football) have become icons through their sporting prowess, not only within Oceania but in Japan, the United States, and throughout Europe as well, as new markets have opened up through professional and semi-professional sport. Yet this movement continues to take place within the fragile context of the spread of globalized media, transnational capital investment, and development initiatives throughout the region. This introduction to global sport in the Pacific considers the complicated realities of and links between modern, highly commercialized team sports that have facilitated both the rise of global sport in the Pacific and the rise of the Pacific in global sport. Focused on key themes of agency and mobility; development and discipline; indigenization, embodiment, and ethno-nationalism; and polyvalent imaginaries, the contributions to this special issue explore how and why sporting practices have become closely linked to various economic, political, and social processes that shape possibilities for everyday life across the Pacific and beyond.

This report offers a preliminary examination of the data gathered during archaeological excavations at Lakithra, Kefalonia. It centers on the discovery of two interconnected shafts used for flint extraction, a unique find. Additionally, the recovered artifacts suggest a ritualistic consecration of this site within the landscape. Unfortunately, as is common when the Ministry of Culture and Sports announces an excavation, individuals claiming archaeological expertise without proper qualifications often rush to offer their own interpretations, disregarding the official announcement. These self-proclaimed "amateur archaeologists" present their theories as if they had conducted the excavations themselves, without citing any references to the Ministry's or the Ephorate of Antiquities' reports. This report presents the initial findings for professional archaeologists, providing a factual account of the excavation and its discoveries, unencumbered by speculative interpretations that frequently rely on Homer and the Odyssey as a reference point. Such interpretations are unfounded, as the archaeological evidence from both this specific excavation and Kefalonia in general bears no connection to the epic poem. In the near future, within the broader context of a comprehensive analysis of the Late Bronze Age in Kefalonia, this particular monument will be presented within its historical and archaeological framework. As stipulated by law, any use of this material is strictly prohibited without prior authorization, given the exclusive publication rights. A Roman pugio from former Ilischken, Kr. Wehlau is one of the most famous artifacts discovered in the area of the Dollkeim-Kovrovo Culture. Thanks to archival sources it has been possible to establish new data concerning that find as well as some other artifacts from Ilischken. Pugio might have been a gift from the Roman official or merchant for a barbarian nobile and it probably comes from the time of Nero’s reign. In Ilischken finds dated to: the Stone Age, the Bronze Age, the Early Roman Period, the Migration Period and the Middle Ages were discovered. They come from thre earchaeological sites.

Tourism has experienced different levels of development in the different regions of Portugal. To frame this development, in this paper dynamic panel data models were estimated with the objective of explaining the evolution of international overnight stays in each region. Secondary data from 2000 to 2011 was used. The analysis includes the main tourism source markets for Portugal, such as the United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands, Ireland, France and Spain. The tourism literature suggests that, among others, the main determinants of tourism demand are income (GDP), household consumption, unemployment rate and the harmonised consumer price index. Per capita income, unemployment rate and final household consumption were identified as the most shared explanatory variables in each tourism region. However, in some regions, the high elasticity with respect to per capita income was confirmed, suggesting that tourism is a luxury good. It is observed that, although significant, the explanatory power of these variables varies according to the origin and the destination region considered. Findings suggest heterogeneous behaviour of the main international tourism demand by region. Furthermore, results also suggest some implications for public and private tourism authorities. Stakeholders can update the analysis, trends and forecasts of international tourism demand, put forward in the National Strategic Plan for Tourism for the period from 2013 to 2015, by taking into account the different macroeconomic variables that help explain international overnight stays in each region of Portugal.

The Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse and the more recent Malka Leifer trial have both highlighted concerns about manifestations of child sexual abuse within the Australian Jewish community. Yet, to date, there has been no examination of how Australian Jewish organisations have responded to these concerns and, particularly, whether the child safe standards introduced at state and/or national level have been actively operationalised within their core policies and practices. This paper presents the findings of an exploratory desktop audit of the child safe policies of 10 de-identified Victorian Jewish organisations. Our findings suggest that they are, at least in principle, adhering to the 11 mandatory Child Safe Standards in Victoria and, in several cases, are also providing a specific religious and cultural rationale for prioritising child safety measures. Nevertheless, more research is required to ascertain whether the public policy statements (i.e. their intent) are being matched by action.

Although popular culture, particularlyinthe wakeofDisney, has convinced us that fairies are, by and large, harmless and benign creatures workingfor human wishfulfilment, the fairies of history werequite different from their modern forebears. Historically, fairies have been viewed in avariety of ways rangingfrom the downright sinisterand demonic to the liminal, the inscrutable, and the unknowable. As asubsetofthe ambiguous supernatural, fairies have elicited significant theological and socioculturald iscomfort,s ometimes denigrated and condemned as handmaidens of their more explicitlydiabolical counterpart, the witch and occasionallydismissed as the annoying vestigeso fa ni gnorant and superstitiousp ast of folkloric fantasy¹.I nt he sixteenth and seventeenthc enturies,h owever,f airies were also persistentlye mployed in works of literary fiction, appearing both in the works of printed texts as well as in dramatic performance. In tandem with their ontological ambivalencea nd hermeneutic heterogeneity, fairies were subject to modes of conceptualisation that werea sd iverse, shape-shifting,a nd oscillatory as their varieties of literary treatment.Insuch acase, reconstructing amonolithic and undifferentiated tradition of fairy in Tudor England is not onlyafallacious undertaking but also, accordingt oMatthew Woodcock, ultimatelyboth unnecessary and futile. Instead, Woodcock encourages 'reading' fairiesa sd efinitive textual constructs, moving away from focusing on the essentialist attributes of fairies themselvest o an analysis of "the rhetorical or formal role of fairy within [the] process of representation" by taking into account "the ways in which fairies are represented, described, depicted, or staged within texts"². One of theu ses to which fairies werep ut in literary works of the sixteenth century was for the political legitimation of the ruling monarchy in England as parallels wered rawn between fairy genealogiesa nd royal lineage, an associative link relying upon the cultural cachet of fairiesw ithint he English national imaginary. This paper will explore this link through atheoretical and historical lens, applying Stephen Greenblatt'st heory of 'self-fashioning' to posit ar ationale for understanding and deconstructing the network of associations between fairy ancestry, imperial ambition, and specular representation and offering an historical survey of connections between fairylore and monarchyi nt he legends of Arthur 1 RichardF .Green, Elf Queens and Holy Friars.F airy Beliefs and the Medieval Church, Philadelphia 2016 (The Middle Ages Series). 2 Matthew Woodcock, Fairy in The Faerie Queene.
