I was, to my surprise, elected to its Council in 1996, with the support of David Parry. That introduced me to Jean and we worked together. Jean’s gentle, persuasive manner endeared him to everyone, so it was a natural step for him to become IUPAB President in 2002. In 2009, he was appointed the founding Editor-in-Chief of the new Springer journal Biophysical Reviews, which was jointly owned by IUPAB and Springer. Jean’s many friends and colleagues were called on to help get the journal going, and he asked me to join its inaugural Editorial Board, which I did with pleasure. In 2014, he retired and handed the “reins” over to me. Although we never co-authored a single paper, I certainly got to know and admire Jean’s genial ways, soft smile, and unassuming manner. My wife and I always looked forward to catching up with him and his wife on our visits to Paris. They were a devoted couple, and I always found it remarkable that Jean’s Parisian accent was a contrast with Millie’s, who spoke excellent French but with an English accent. I think of Jean as one of science’s great gentlemen. Kind regards. Cris dos Remedios, PhD, Dsc. Professor Emeritus, The University of Sydney and. the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute.
