It is my pleasure to write a few words to introduce myself to the readers of Biophysical Reviews as part of the 'meet the editors' series.

On behalf of the Hungarian Biophysical Society and the European Biophysical Societies Association I am pleased and honoured to welcome you at the 8 th European Biophysics Congress in Budapest. Biophysics has been traditionally strong in Hungary. The first Biophysics Department was organized in Pé cs in the late forties followed by several others all over the country. The organization of the Hungarian Biophysical Society started in 1960 and was completed in March, 1961, thus this year we celebrate the 50 th anniversary of our society. The first president of the society was Eugene Ernst, followed by Jó zsef Tigyi, Lajos Keszthelyi, Pá l Ormos and Pé ter Zá vodszky. The Honorary Presidents are Sá ndor Damjanovich, Lajos Keszthelyi, Pá l Ormos, Gyö rgyi Rontó and Jó zsef Tigyi. The society started with 111 members. The membership steadily increased and we have had about 400 members for the past 20 years. This congress is the 8 th European Biophysics Congress and is the fifth since EBSA decided to organize congresses biennially. Organizing congresses more frequently became possible because of the larger income generated by EBSA. The main source is the European Biophysics Journal magnificently managed by Anthony Watts. The financial support from EBSA and Springer was pivotal for organizing this congress. This is the first time when 60 bursaries were offered for young talented colleagues to facilitate their participation. The Biophysical Society
Biophysical Reviews
The 20th IUPAB Congress took place online, together with the annual meetings of the Brazilian Biophysical Society and the Brazilian Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, from the 4th to the 8th of October, 2021. The ten keynote lectures, 24 symposia, two poster sessions, and a series of technical seminars covered the full diversity of current biophysical research and its interfaces with other fields. The event had over 1000 attendees, with an excellent gender balance. Although the Americas dominated, there were also significant numbers of participants from Europe, Asia, and Africa.

In the last three years, we have submitted three annual reports and two proposals, In addition, we have published 32 papers, (some of which are in @ process of publication) most in journals of exceUent repute. It is the sum of such entities which constitutes the gist of this Comprehensive Report. We will make an attempt to summarize all of the above efforts in Section III. However, our attempt will fall quite short. Hence, we have no recourse but to suggest that a proper perspective will be gained only by @ readings from the list of Section II.A. In particular, our three Annual Reports will provide a much more complete account of accomplishments than this very terse summary.
Biology is chemistry on an impressive scale. It is a product of evolution, the outcome of countless random experiments, resulting in the exquisite complexity of the biological world of which we are a part. Setting aside any philosophical considerations, living organismsincluding ourselvesare simply nothing more than wet, floppy bags of chemistry: complicated mixtures of molecules interacting in a multitude of ways. All this takes place mainly in water, a solvent that most chemists try to avoid because of its complexities. However, we can learn from this. In the course of evolution, biology has had the opportunity to perform vastly more experiments than we can ever contemplate in the laboratory. The resulting chemistry is fascinating in its own right, and we can quite rightly study it for its intellectual satisfaction alone. We can also, if we choose, apply what we learn to other areas of chemistry and to its applications in biomedical and environmental areas. This book is about the physical chemistry of biological macromolecules and how we can study it. The approach here is unashamedly experimental: this is the way science actually works, and in any case we do not yet have the rigorous theoretical understanding perhaps found in more mature areas of chemistry. This is what makes it a fun topic, and why it poses fascinating challenges for both theoretical and experimental scientists. The level adopted in this tutorial text should be suitable for early undergraduate years in chemical or physical sciences. However, since this interdisciplinary topic is often postponed to later years, the book will also act as a basis for more advanced study. Students in other areas of biological sciences might also appreciate the less intimidating approach to physical chemistry that I have attempted here. The term "biophysical chemistry" was brought to prominence by the work of John T. Edsall (1902-2002), who died just prior to his 100th birthday. Together with Jeffries Wyman, he wrote the original classic text: Biophysical Chemistry, Volume I (Academic Press, 1958), but there never was a Volume 2. This book is dedicated to him and to the many other physical scientists who have dared to enter biological territory. With thanks to my family and other animals who have tolerated me during the writing of this text, and to my students and other colleagues who have checked and corrected some of the material. I did not always follow their suggestionsso just blame me.

Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics publishes quality original articles and reviews in the developing areas of biochemistry and biophysics. The focus of the journal is on studies that significantly advance mechanism. Scientifically valid reports of studies that do not advance the understanding of the underlying mechanism of the system under study are unlikely to be accepted.
