Corky Laing's Mountain - Live La Brasov Jazz And Blues Festival February 11 2019

 

Mountain was, for me at least, a "Hero" band. I think back to a time in the seventies when a long lost friend of mine and myself who were not considered "cool" would never be invited to any parties. So hence, the chances of "picking up any chicks" was thoroughly out of the question. And besides, with faces like ours, our chances were always gonna be pretty slim anyway. Instead we would wile away the hours playing pinball at a local bowling alley. But before we would go into said "alley" we would sit in his "68" Chevy Camaro supporting and smoking the Mexican economy, while listening to "Flowers Of Evil" on his 8-track. Now this was way before a car system had the capacity to cause the kind of damage like the recent Tennessee bomber did. There is a part in program three (on the 8-track) during "Dream Sequence" where Leslie hits a note and holds it for what seemed like ten minutes when your under the influence. We would turn that 8-track player up full and play our air guitars while that note resonated. As the "Dream Sequence" continued and the band would go into the "improv" section of the song, the air guitars became the air drums. Corky Laing kills it during those sections. He is never mentioned as one of the greatest drummers, but I'm here to tell you, you should reconsider his standing when greatest drummer lists come up. In January over at "The Adult Bookstore" I will be posting the first three Mountain albums. I STII LOVE MOUNTAIN. Ok one story from this download. Cut after track 2, track 3 fades in. Track 9 fades out in the middle and fades in again. Short cut before end of track 10 due to tape flip.
Track 14 fades out and in again before end of track. There is some minor background noise obviously from the broadcast.

Nice document of the band in a great sound. Bob Geldof is talking a lot between the songs and the audience seems to enjoy the show.

Guitars 101 has a post of the same show sourced from a broadcast on WJXQ with a date of July 23, 1990.  Several other sources list July 23, 1990 as the date of the show. Damn Yankees, recorded July 23, 1990, and the promo poster has the broadcast date of August 3.  So...it's not clear why the cassette says 8/16/90.

As I just posted the Santana Live From Electric Ladyland show from August 1990 that's sourced from a cassette, I figured I'd post the other LFEL show I have on cassette: Damn Yankees, recorded a few weeks earlier.  

While this is clearly from the same series of shows, hosted by Pat St. John, with the same Jimi Hendrix theme music...the cassette looks totally different.  The packaging doesn't mention the Album Network, but looks like a promo cassette from Warner Brothers Records.

There are other differences that must be explained.  After each block of commercials, there are long silences of one or two minutes before the show starts again.  These are most likely blocks of time left for local commercials. These long silences are not on the Santana show.  I've deleted the one and two minutes of silent air after each of the commercial blocks. 

As I mentioned, a version of this is up on Guitars 101 already.  This version is definitely "pre-FM" right from the cassette.

Live From Electric Ladyland was a syndicated radio show distributed on CD by the Album Network in conjunction with New York City's WNEW-FM radio station. The show was hosted by WNEW disc jockey Pat St. John. It's likely that WNEW broadcast the full show, and it was edited down for national syndication. 

While the LFEL shows were distributed on CD starting in October of 1990, there were a few earlier shows that were distributed on tape. Unlike the CDs, which are often printed with the broadcast date and promotional logos, the cassettes have very little information on them.

To start with, there's no recording date, so I sourced that from from Santana.com.  Santana.com lists "The Healer" as the second song, but it's not on the cassette...as far as I can hear.  I'm not an expert on 80s/90s Santana, so if I've got something wrong, please put in the comments so I can fix it.  

The promo poster for this show has a broadcast date of September 7, 1990.

Let's see....what other clues do they give us?  The Album Network gives us their address and phone number in Burbank, California.  The tape duplication was by 52nd Street...which sounds like New York City, but the Sept. 1989 issue of Billboard says was in Los Angeles.  There's not much we can learn from the J-card.

So, here it is, digitized from an original cassette.  It's complete with vintage commercials, tracked so you can discard the ads if you want just music.  I've included 300 dpi scans of the cassette J-card, and both sides of the cassette.  There was no cue sheet.  For one of the CD shows, I have a faxed cue sheet, so they may have used faxes for the cassettes, too. 

While it's likely most of you will toss the ads, the Kmart ads reference a cross-section of 1990s pop music...and a time when we bought music at department stores.

Neil Young / Catalyst Club 1984

Here's what I think I know about this set.  

Neil Young played the Catalyst Club on February 6 and February 7, 1984, playing two nearly identical sets each night.

Broken Arrow Records issued three bootleg CDs in 1995.  While Discogs lists four releases by Broken Arrow Records, the first listing is for a 1980 LP by Big Red Savage and the Blasters Country Band, with an address in Hendersonville, Tennessee and a catalog number of A.G. 3301.  I'm sure Discogs is wrong and that this is not from the same "Broken Arrow Records" as the Neil Young discs.

Discogs lists the Neil Young discs as:

...which follows the front of the booklets.

The spines list the CD titles as:

The disc for Volume One says "Catalyst Club."

The disc for Volume Three says "Catalyst Club I"

The disc for Volume Four says "Catalyst Club II"

Discs 1 and 4 use the same font on a light green background, while disc 3 uses a different font on the silver CD background.  

In the upper corner of the back covers it says "One of Four," "Three of Four," and "Four of Four," so the bootlegger clearly intended this to be a four CD set.  I've never seen a "Volume 2," and Discogs does not list it.  A few weeks ago, our author Enoch posted the show from February 6.  His post had both sets.  

Volume One has the early set from February 6. The third song played that night ("Violent Side") was not included on the CD.

Volumes Three and Four have the early and late sets from February 7.  These look to be complete, with no songs missing.

William Keats wrote: The new Last Waltz booklet indicates the DC show date was actually 16 August 1976 (see page 1 of the booklet). The PreFM copy that I have has this setlist, which is not the entire show, but everything that King Biscuit broadcast (from PreFM sources including reels, which is how the Biscuit used to get sent out).

“This was The Band near the end of their run. They were just weeks away from their final concert (which became the overstuffed movie The Last Waltz) and Robbie Robertson left the band shortly after. This recording shows them as seasoned vets, playing material they’d been comfortable with for years.” Note: per the Bill Graham Archive, the actual date of this performance is now assumed to be 17 July 1976, not 16 August 1976 as stated in Band books and on King Biscuit Flower Hour bootlegs.

Notes:
Gary Moore's shows go down very well here, no wonder why is that. Over the weekend you liked the return of Madrid '85 show, so I believe you will be happy to find he checked back there again two years later with the great "Wild Frontier" promoting ensemble. Plus he was transmitted by the radio. These radio captures from 1987 would really serve immensely well for what could become a truly historic live album, hard to match by anybody. Although - listening to this - I wish I could edit out the Spanish restless talker over the songs... Pre-fm of this would be a splendid find. Nevertheless, it's back to your reach - and it's Gary - as you'd expect - totally splendid. Enjoy the sorely missed hero!

Huey Lewis & the News / Kabuki Theatre, San Francisco - Westwood One Superstars in Concert Show #84-22

Okay, gang... I was over on Guitars 101 (blessed be their name!) and ran across a couple of listings that were reposting this show I digitized back in 2013.  At risk of looking like a nit-picking jerk, I'm reposting it with an argument about the date. I want to be clear that I LOVE IT when people repost these shows and I want to express my gratitude to everyone that has done so.  

I'm not sure where this picked up the 1984-02-21 date after I digitized it in 2013.  At the time I did it, I left the date blank as it was unknown...although as the syndicated broadcast date was 1984, I thought it was likely recorded in 1984.  I think my assumption...and the date of 1984-02-21 are both wrong.  

In 2020, we have more information available....these days....

....Setlist.fm lists the following Feb. '84 shows for Lewis:

Setlist.fm show Lewis at the Kabuki in San Francisco on 12/30/83 and 12/31/83 for New Year's Eve shows....but he also played the Kabuki on October 27, 1983.   I don't know which of those three dates this was recorded, but it's got to be one of them...and this doesn't "sound" like a New Year's show: There are no ridiculous horns blowing in the audience.  So my guess is October 27, 1983. 

The records I sourced this from are the second broadcast by Westwood One of songs from the October 27, 1983 concert.  The first broadcast was SS84-11 with an air date the weekend of June 30, 1984. It looks like the show was repeated rhw following year on June 28-30, 1985, with the number SS85-11.  As that matches the SS84-11 a little too closely for my taste, I want to point out that the '85 number may be an error on the Ebay listing.  The first '84 date I'm sure of, as I've seen copies of the disc label and the cue sheet, and there's a trade ad for the show on that date (included here).

Huey Lewis & The News hit the ball out of the park with their third album, Sports.  The September 1983 release dominated the charts until November 1984, with five Top 40 singles...and in 1985, Weird Al Yankovic parodied one of the songs with "I Want A New Duck."

Speaking of Weird Al, he and Huey teamed up for a GREAT promo spot for the 30th Anniversary Release of Sports...even if you're not a fan, it's worth checking out.  I don't see that it's available for embedding, but if you do a search on YouTube for "American Psycho with Huey Lewis and Weird Al" it will turn up....as you can see from the title, it's got a parody of a scene from that movie...

Anyway...this is digitized directly from the discs, I've declicked it one click at a time, and I included a 300 dpi scan of the cue sheet and one of the discs.

I retagged the files and filled in artist, title, and composer fields.  I corrected an incorrect title, too.

In the 1990s, the King Biscuit Flower Hour cut down on recording new concerts and settled into repeating concerts from prior years. Some years they dropped a long song to make room for two songs by a new artist, but in general, once you have one of the 1990s KBFH by an artist, you have all the 1990s shows by that artist. The only thing that changes are the commercials, and Bill Minkin records a new intro and outro. What you want to do is find one of the shows that's by a single artist...which bring us to this week's offering.

This is "THE" 1990's KBFH George Thorogood show.  This one is from the broadcast week of September 14 to  September 20, 1992, but I've also seen it show up on these dates:

March 12, 1989 (same songs, diff order)
September 3 - September 9, 1990 (missing "One Scotch...")
April 1 - April 7, 1991 (missing "One Scotch...")
June 21 - June 27, 1993 (missing "You Talk Too Much")
May 9 - May 15, 1994 
June 24 - June 30, 1996
July 21 - July 27, 1997

This is an exact reproduction of the show, including commercials.  The commercials are tracked so you can delete them easily if you don't find them of interest.

Dog Soldier's sole, self-titled album had strong connections to the Keef Hartley Band, with Hartley on drums; longtime Hartley band singer and guitarist Miller Anderson; and Derek Griffiths, who'd played alongside Hartley in the mid-'60s in the Artwoods, on guitar and vocals as well. The record isn't as blues-rock-oriented as most of Hartley's past work, perhaps because, according to the liner notes to the 2011 CD reissue, "the story goes that the band were placed under a certain amount of pressure to pursue a radio-friendly American AOR feel, much against their will." Despite the group's impressive credentials, the record is indeed an unsatisfying, unimpressive mid-'70s AOR effort, and not solely because the band members seem uncertain of their direction. There's some undistinguished histrionic hard rock of the kind you'd expect from an album whose cover boasts a ludicrous painting of a Native American warrior astride a rocket ship. This is leavened by touches of art rock, usually via Mel Simpson's sometimes spacy keyboards, as well as some nagging if unmemorable hard rock riffs and a dose of the pop harmonies you'd expect from a band pressured to get American airplay. The CD reissue on Esoteric adds historical liner notes and a lengthier version (identified as "first version") of the most interesting track, the 11-minute closer, "Looks Like Rain," which has the record's most extended and faintly psychedelic instrumental progressive rock passage. ~artistcamp

 

Not as good as the Keef Hartley Band records but still  good.
