The main differences with respect to the historiola of the Greek version of the same prayer are discussed, and the genealogical relations among the Armenian manuscripts are outlined. A preliminary critical edition of the Armenian historiola is published, based upon the manuscripts the author had access to, followed by its Italian translation.

The events, which occurred at Grand Vizier Moḥammad Beg's instigation, are told of in a number of contemporary sources, the most important of them being Bābā'ī ben Loṭf's Ketāb-e anūsī (in Judeo-Persian) and Arak'el Davrižec'i's Girk' patmut'eanc' (in Armenian). The article tries to find a rationale for the differences found between these two accounts, focusing on how the two authors report the murder of a Jewish informer to the Grand Vizier that was perpetrated by other Jews. By analysing how they fashion a different narrative drawing on the same events, the article proposes that their opposite attitudes towards the murderers come from their different intent and approach in writing their works. Bābā'ī's account follows in the wake of the traditional biblical paradigm of sin and punishment, thus showing less sympathy for the plight of the Jews than one could expect, as from the author's perspective their suffering was supposedly brought on them by their own sins. On the other hand, Aṙak'el's more empathic representation of the Jews and their tribulations could be understood in the light of his own concern about his coreligionists being tempted to convert to Islam for material benefit or economic convenience. This is the reason why Aṙak'el stresses how the Jews held to their faith and were not lured by the money and gifts the Persians offered them to turn to Islam. He fashions the chapter he devoted to the history of the Jews of Isfahan as a moral tale, complete with a hero and a villain and enhanced with some Jewish flavour details, to show his fellow Armenians how they, too, should resist the allurement of conversion.

It argues that the Armenian translator un- derstood τῇ ψυχῇ of the Greek as a dative modifier related to Shechem and interpreted Δίνας as the genitive indirect object of προσέσχεν, whereas con- ventional Greek syntax would have required reading τῇ ψυχῇ as the proper indirect object of the verb followed by a genitive modifier (Δίνας). Whether this reading is of Hexaplaric origin or not, it shows how the Armenian trans- lator chose to disambiguate his Vorlage favoring context over isolation and the conventional rules of Greek syntax.

In his Account of his Own Successes, written in 1637, Piromalli clearly embraced what at the time was a ‘classic’ approach: to discuss first the matter of the union with the local ecclesiastical hierarchies; then, when—as it often happened—this failed, to gather some disciples among the schismatics who would preach correct creed among local people on a more practical and day-to-day basis. However, in another account that Piromalli wrote in 1654, just a few months before being officially appointed the Archbishop of the Diocese of Nakhichevan, he claimed that although the Armenian ‘clergy was already educated and enlightened in the Catholic truths’, only the conversion of the wealthy Armenian merchant families of New Julfa could persuade other Armenians to embrace Catholicism. Since, as he wrote, ‘all missionary efforts are wasted’ in converting New Julfan Armenians, he maintained that it was necessary for the Pope to ask ‘the Princes of Venice and Tuscany’ to threaten the New Julfan merchants that they would be denied access to their ports, unless they chose to convert.
This paper will consider this shift by discussing Piromalli’s attempts to bring the whole Armenian Church into union with Rome, including his role in the union of the Polish Armenian Church. It will also analyze his embracing of a more Realpolitik approach in light of the emerging Armenian merchant colony of New Julfa.

In the 1610s-1630s, the archdiocese of Naxiǰewan was the destination of a series of Dominican missions. The article focuses on the relations between the missionaries and the local Armenian Catholic hierarchy and on how Propaganda Fide dealt with the contentious doctrinal and authority issues at stake.

Starting with the end of the 18th century, they underwent a process of growing individuation and self-perception as a separate and distinct group that eventually led to dejudaization by the first half of the 20th century. The article provides an overview of the external and internal factors which triggered this process, such as the Christian interest in the Karaites as the members of a supposedly 'purer' and older form of Judaism in the 17th-18th centuries, to which Karaite scholars responded starting a meta-historical research and reflection on their past; Russian anti-Judaism and the Russian imperial policies concerning the Jews; the better economic conditions of the Crimean Karaites in the 19th century compared to those of the Rabbanite Jews; the nationalist revival of the 19th century.
