The concept of the modern-day teacher and the development of ideas such as 'teacher professionalism' have historically been gendered, often reflecting male paradigms and political theories. At the same time, there is a large body of research which shows that gender is a relevant variable which must be taken into account when explaining the functioning of classes and teacher-student interaction. This study aims to investigate the influence of teacher gender on students of English as a foreign language (EFL) in southern Spain and provides qualitative and quantitative evidence collected from students (n=459) and teachers (n=35) from primary school through to university levels which challenges some of these gendered paradigms and provides contrasts with previous studies on preferences of teacher gender. Our contextualised investigation provides evidence to suggest that the construction of more supportive and democratic learning environments are more frequently observed in our specific context among female teachers, while more prescriptive environments traditionally associated with masculinized forms of teaching are perceived as being less helpful in obtaining successful learner outcomes.

Drawing on a working experience of language teaching, teacher training and the implementation of the EFQM model of excellence, and taking into account the recent legislative changes in the Spanish state educational system , this paper studies a number of current trends relating to quality and effectiveness in education with a view to examining possible applications for improving language teaching and learning. Apart from its intended informative purpose, this study proposes the development of a framework similar to those already established within education but not as yet fully applied to formal language instruction in Spain, with the intention of finding ways to improve a number of key areas in the management of second language teaching and learning
through the systematic implementation of effectiveness activities.

The relationship between self-concept and performance in education is a complex one and results from research on this matter are, at times, contradictory. The aim of this study is to analyse differences in perceptions between male and female students in terms of their academic self-concept and their actual performance in English as a Foreign Language (EFL). A total of 110 upper secondary students in Granada, Spain, provided personal perspectives into their perceived strengths and weaknesses in discrete communicative language skills in English and reported on their academic performance in this subject. Results show differences between boys' and girls' perceptions, whereby female participants in the study have relatively higher levels of motivation but also increased levels of anxiety; in addition, females expressed a poorer view on their academic performance in the different language skills in comparison to males, despite the fact that girls' actual performance in assessments was slightly better. The study tentatively concludes that the analysis of student perceptions on their own mastery of skills, as well as their affective attachment towards the language, may provide useful information for teachers.

Information and communication technologies (ICTs) are firmly established in language learning contexts, yet there are still many questions in relation to how widely they are employed and, indeed, how useful they are in developing all aspects of communicative competence. With a cohort of four teachers and one hundred students, we examine learners' digital habits and their perceived usefulness of online computer-assisted language training in an official state-funded language school for adults. Perceptions from students were collected through an anonymous questionnaire with open and closed questions in relation to how often they used ICTs and how useful the level of usefulness of these technologies. This information was complemented by data obtained from teachers by means of a semi-structured interview. In general, teachers and students coincide in their belief that ICTs are useful for language learning, but also express difficulties in finding appropriate resources, despite (or even as a result of) the vast number of available websites and pages. Results from students point to a tendency to use ICTs mostly to improve pronunciation, listening comprehension, and reading and less for oral interaction. In addition, the frequency with which female participants use ICTs to improve oral expression, reading and grammar is significantly higher than male students. This study concludes by drawing attention to the need for training of students and teachers in ICT use and to the desirability of following a sound and shared policy in language learning contexts.

Within the development of the key competence of oral communication and spoken interaction in a foreign language, correct and intelligible pronunciation is a key concern. It is perhaps the case, however, that the time spent on enabling students to enhance this aspect of their communicative capacity has been given less systematic treatment than in other activities in the foreign language classroom. This paper discusses a number of key questions involved in the acquisition of accurate pronunciation in formal instructional settings and reports on the perceived effectiveness of activities aimed directly or indirectly at developing pronunciation. The study involves the retrospective assessment by 189 student teachers of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) in Andalusia, to identify which classroom activities helped most to increase their pronunciation attainment and to examine why students in this context often fail to improve in this area.

Este texto es una aproximación a la producción artística de Luis Casablanca (1957-2016), que abraca desde dibujos de línea, a piezas tridimensionales, instalaciones o diseño de vestuario teatral. Como hilo conductor utilizaremos sus dibujos, reflejo de su investigación con las técnicas, los principios de la composición, la conveniencia del formato, el espacio lleno y vacío, los tamaños relativos y las proporciones. Mostrar de modo sintético la actividad creadora de Luis Casablanca y dar visibilidad a su obra, son los propósitos de ese escrito.

This text is an approximation to the artistic production of Luis Casablanca (1957- 2016), including drawings, three-dimensional works, art installations or theatrical costume design. We will use his line drawings, as "conductive thread, reflection of his investigation with techniques, principles of composition, convenience of the format, study o the full and empty space, relative sizes and proportions. To show in a synthetic way Luis Casablanca’s creative activity and to give visibility to his work, they are the intentions of this escrit.

El objetivo de este artículo es mostrar que las capacidades sonoras, audiovisuales y de geolocalización de cualquier dispositivo de telefonía móvil representan un incentivo a recorrer el espacio caminando y a experimentarlo de forma creativa. La conexión entre lenguaje y territorio es constitutiva del Homo sapiens. Por exceso de tecnología, esta vivencia simple y directa del espacio se ha perdido junto con la capacidad de narrativa espacial, tan constitutiva del ser humano. Mostraremos, mediante ejemplos del mundo del arte y de la vivencia cotidiana de cualquier ciudadano, que el uso creativo de la tecnología móvil brinda la posibilidad de restablecer la conexión perdida entre territorio e imaginario colmando la brecha existente entre narratividad y espacialidad.

They also make us realize that life is a journey, following a path and leaving a trace. From drawing as a gesture, a personal trace and witness of our interrelation with the ecosystem
in which we live, to the walks of the Walkingartists where gesture becomes drawing, walking and drawing are shown as activities driven by the same
desire to broaden the horizon and apprehend new territories, both physical and conceptual. Both set the body in motion and lead us to become aware of
