To do so, it used as operational definitions of SEs and effectiveness the ones provided by Lasprogatta and Cotten (2003) as well as Diochon and Anderson (2009), respectively. Methodologically, a qualitative research was employed through the conduction of twenty-three semistructured interviews and by gathering related material such as videos, websites and media articles. Data analysis utilized Bardin’s content analysis technique with the assistance of the ®Nvivo 10 software for qualitative analysis. Research findings highlighted the importance of a proactive, adaptive and resourceful mindset to frame challenges into business opportunities and social work. Moreover, results demonstrated that managerial perception of problems emerged through different strategies, motivated by distinct reasons and systematized so that replication became easier. S...

In this market, innovate and act before competitors, accelerate the launch of products, reduce design time and the placement of new items on the market is a survival condition (Lipovetsky, 2007). A central factor in the fashion spread is imitation, as this promotes both innovation and obsolescence, forcing producers to set up periodically (Caulkins et al., 2007, Pesendorfer, 1995). The research object is the "modinha", women's clothing that follows media trends, is the copying, with or without changes, to the mass market (Avelar, 2009; Victor, 2007), in this study, "José Avelino Street Fair". This fair meets weekly hundreds of manufacturers in a metropolis of northeastern Brazil that has been established as a fashion hub. Thus, it was proposed to identify the process of ...

This paper aims to explore critical elements for eco-retrofitting a conventional industrial park,... more This paper aims to explore critical elements for eco-retrofitting a conventional industrial park, based on a survey of companies and institutions located in Brazil. The study investigates social barriers to be overcome in promotion of opportunities for waste exchange. Our results indicate that values, trust behaviour, waste cognitive domain and environment engagement are necessary for the creation of an eco-industrial park. Similar values of benevolence and universalism are essential for company engagement to eco-retrofit. Low levels of trust behaviour combining with limited waste cognitive domain prevent firms from establishing agreement on waste exchange initiatives. The findings lend support to the view that social barriers are prerequisites to engagement among firms in establishing technological and logistical solutions. Serious attention needs to be given to these social barriers because they are not easily overcome in the social and economic context of developing countries.

Any new initiative with this purpose might be considered a social innovation. From this concept, it is perceived as social innovation the efforts of the Programa de Educação em Células Cooperativas (PRECE), an initiative originated in Pentecoste, a municipality in the state of Ceará, located in the Brazilian semiarid region. This program has benefitted hundreds of youngsters, enabling their access to knowledge and further approval in university entrance exams. The educational method of collaboration in cells made possible broadening the horizons of many youngsters coming from rural communities, even when lessons were ministered under a tree in the middle of a farm. The objective of this study is to identify the dimensions of social innovation, according to Tardif and Harrisson (2005), existing in the PRECE's proposal. It is aimed to evidence how the initiative is composed, bringing to light the essential elements that make it social innovative. A case study of PRECE was carried out through qualitative research. Data were collected via semistructured interviews with members of the direction and coordination of the Program, and analyzed using the software NVivo 10. The results highlighted how the dimensions of social innovation are composed within PRECE. This research contributes by foregrounding a social initiative that has been capable of changing individual realities in the Brazilian semiarid and showing how such initiative is constituted in the social innovative perspective.

Students from the school of Medicine collaborate with the Institute by exercising their knowledge practically. The community, the University and the organization harvest advantages out of this cooperation. In this regard, the research question asks which would be the benefits to each part. To analyse the benefits of this collaboration, this study uses three categories of benefits drawn on from Cruz et al. (2011), which identify advantages (i) for the NGO and for society; (ii) for the researchers involved; (iii) for the university. This research was exploratory, qualitative and used semi-structured interviews. The data analysis utilized Bardin’s (1977) content analysis technique. Findings highlighted how the relationship between NGOs, community and university has been beneficial for all parties, as this interaction tackles an important social demand: the lack of appropriate p...
