Worry

My brother called to tell us a few minutes ago that Japan has been hit by an 8.9 magnitude earthquake.

I'd just made a call to Japan earlier in the day so that Mom could speak to her sister. Mom asked her about the earlier earthquake. My aunt said it caused no damage. We were all very relieved and the two sisters had a lovely chat to catch up on their lives. This photo is of our family temple in Sendai where my grandfather was the priest.

And now this.

My post was about the happiest person in America yesterday. It was a frivolus post. I was happy.

And now this.

My fingers are shaking as I type this. I've just read that Sendai where my mother's sister and family are has been hit badly. There was a 13 foot tsunami. Tokyo has also been damaged. We have more family and dear friends there.

We tried to call my aunt and uncle, but the phones are overburdened and we couldn't get through.

We're sitting here... not knowing.

It's such an awful feeling.

Good grief! The Hawaii tsunami siren is going off! We're supposed to be hit by a tsunami at 2:30 AM or something like that. What in the world is going on?

  2. Oh Kay, what a difficult time of uncertainty for you.
    So strong, 8.9.
I pray for the best possible news for you and all.

    And the VOA is saying
"The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in the U.S. state of Hawaii said a tsunami warning was also in effect for Russia, Marcus Island and the Northern Marianas. It said a tsunami watch was issued for Guam, Taiwan, the Philippines, Indonesia and Hawaii."

  3. Terrible! I hope your relatives in Japan are safe and on high ground.

I worry about Cloudia and Elsha who live in Waikiki. I am going to call them now and offer them a place to stay.

Though we are near Pearl Harbor, my house is on a hill, so we are safe, I hope!

  5. Oh, I am so sorry Kay. The pictures are terrifying. Unfathomable. Our sirens have gone off a couple of times. We are on the water but don't have to evacuate, because we are 150 ft. up and mauka of the street.
We also got a civil defense call on the phone.
    Hang in there. Best.
    No sleep tonight.

  6. Dear Kay, I have been watching TV all morning and I thought of you and your family and relatives in Sendai. It is beyond comprehension that in a few moments so much damage can be caused. It is so sad, but I admire the levelheaded way the Japanese people face this catastrophy with enormous consequences. I shall pray for you and your family.

  21. Kay, you have touched so many lives; now in this time of suffering and waiting, we lift you in prayer.

Heavenly Father, I ask that you will fill Kay and Art and Kay's mom with the peace that passeth understanding while they wait for news of their family in Japan. No matter the outcome, the days ahead will be difficult for people in Sendai particularly. I pray that you give them strength and courage to be lights for others.

Lord, I also lift my friends in Hawaii. I ask Lord that the tsunami be just strong enough to remind people that you are God, but weak enough to pass with little damage and no loss of life.

In His Holy and Everlasting Name I pray, Kelley

  30. I've been thinking about you all day and about the many Japanese children I taught who returned to live in Japan. It's awful - I hope for you at least there will be comforting news.

  31. I first heard the word tsunami a few years ago when we visited Oregon. We didn't have tsunamis in Texas. I was surprised to wake this morning to the news in Japan, and the tsunami alert for the coast of Oregon. Daughter-in-law's family live in Osaka which means they're safe I think.

I'll be thinking about you today and hoping you get good news.

  32. Sounds like the tsunami didn't do any damage in Hawaiian islands? Waiting for YOUR update. California coast is bracing for high waves but not expecting anything like Japan. Certainly a mind-blowing event. Praying for all.

    Thank you for your worring.
    I'm so impressed.
    in Sendai electronic is down.
that's why it's hard to contact with people.
I hope your relatives are fine!

  40. Blogging has given me personal connections in many parts of the country and the world. When the news is of Japan, and then Hawaii, that connection is you. It's you I thought of first. I thought I remembered that your family was from Sendai.
As we begin to get news from northern Japan, I'm hoping that your news is good. The news for many will be grim.
My thoughts are with you and your family.
