This paper offers a new subversive reading of Moshe Smilansky’s story "Khawadja nazar". The paper deals with the movements of the story’s protagonist, situating them in the context of the Zionist colonial project.
I suggest how the failure of the archetype of the ʽNew Jewʼ, in effect ensures the success of the national project of the ʽNew Jewʼ, i.e., Zionism. 
I do so by conducting a close (Deluzian) reading of the protagonist’s désir, stressing the fundamental gap between ʽa placeʼ and ʽthe placeʼ within the Zionist discourse
