Now it is also available in electronic form under the Creative Commons license – Attribution, Non-commercial 3.0 Unported. Bukarski’s review of the work is also included.
The collection, having the same title as the blog of the author, consists of a selection of posts written online, that are not completely reflecting the authors own opinion, since priority is given to scientific-popular texts.
Contents published on this blog are grouped in several categories, but generally, they are comprised by two segments: the first of which is archaeology (in general, but also in view of the current developments in this field in Macedonia), and the second – the sharing of personal experiences from the author’s own carrier.

Through the stone material, an attempt was made a more comprehensive picture of the raw material, technical and typological characteristics of the Neolithic stone industry at this site to be gained as well as its relationship with related simultaneously industries. All stone artifacts from the site at Rug Bair, village of Gorobinci (Saint Nicholas), were divided into three main groups: chipped, ground and grind/abrasive stone tools. The access to this material is reduced to petrographic and technological-typological analysis and definition of basic categories and types of tools, based solely on morphological characteristics of artifacts. The results of the technological and typological analysis and analogy with other stone industries in the Neolithic cultures of the southeastern Balkans, contributed to further clarify, in a regional context, certain processes that occurred in the Neolithic period in the territory of the Republic of Macedonia and the Balkans.
A small number of artifacts from the Neolithic stone assemblages from the Republic of Macedonia are the result, above all, the lack of knowledge about the lithic materials, the absence of sieving and flotation, as well as the personal choice of researchers which type of findings is to be kept for the assemblage. Stone tools have not been yet analyzed in detail in the Macedonian Archaeology and Neolithic or New Stone Age in Macedonia, and are still identified only with the ceramic production.
This book is an attempt by a methodological way, to sublimate in one place all aspects of the stone industry which will contribute and enable to further studies about this topic in the Republic of Macedonia.

Tsotsev Kamen is an interesting geomorphologic (denudation) occurrence in stack-type rock, and also remarkable archaeological site. In fact, here the two things are intertwined, because throughout the past, the man broke and formed parts of the rock adjusting to their needs and goals.
Geologically, Tsotsev Kamen is composed of tuffs and andesitic ignimbrites of upper-Miocene to lower-Pliocene age (6-10 million years). In the vicinity are still present upper-Eocene sediments, colluvial and river sediments. Except andesites as quite solid rocks that remained to stick out in relief, others are poorly resistant rocks, which were eroded very quickly and taken away by fluvial denudation processes. The very formation of the rock began with its disclosure by Vrlej river waters, about 150,000 years ago or on the level of the river terrace of 60-70 m. Before 50,000 years ago a river terrace of 30 m is created, and part of the rock (to the level of lower cave) was above the riverbed. This means that from that period (middle Paleolithic) until today, there were conditions for the settlement of the rock and interventions on it. However, the rock was completely separated in relief around 20,000-15,000 years ago (end of Würm, which coincides with the end of the late Paleolithic) when river Vrlej was cut to the river terrace of 10 m. During Holocene, the intensity of erosive processes and the incision of Vrlej were signifi-cantly faster (about 0.8 mm/yr) due to favorable climate and anthropogenic impacts through deforestation in the watershed, especially since the XVI century.
In terms of palaeogeographic features, from our previous research and data’s comes that from the beginning of the rock formation by the end of Würm (12,000 years ago), the climate in this region was cooler and with less amount of rainfall. Unlike today, the whole environment Tsotsev Kamen (Stone) was covered with dense coniferous forest, humus-rich forest soils and numerous, but relatively weak springs (due to the geological composition). Thus, although Vrlej over a year had a significant amount of water, fluvial-denudation processes were slower. With warming of climate during Holocene, the amount of spring and running water has increased even more. Then probably anthropogenic impact was strengthened by expanding arable land and pastures at the expense of forests, which in turn rein-forced erosion. Probably in this period the man's reshaped 2 large caves, carved staircases, swimming pools and other structures in the rock, which probably served for ritual shrines function.
Tsotsev Kamen began to form in the Middle Paleolithic, and during transition from the Paleolithic to the late Mesolithic (which coincides with the beginning of Holocene), already received modern morphological appearance. The two major caves with southeast direction and many others smaller, in late Paleolithic were above the water surface, suggest that may have been temporarily or longer inha-bited by people in the past. Because of lack of cave sediments in both caves the results in relation to earlier periods of the Neolithic, will stand at the current level of research. Lack of Paleolithic, Mesolithic early-Neolithic sites in the Republic of Macedonia now exclude the possibility of discussing issues related to evolutionary trends of artifacts, especially those of carved stone found in the vicinity of Tsotsev Kamen. But this discontinuity is artificial and due to incomplete survey of these periods, and therefore cannot confirm or deny the existence of this type of prehis-toric sites in the wider region of Kratovo.
From X-th century and especially after the XVI-th century of excessive and almost complete destruction of forests in these areas (for ore melting, protection from guerrillas during Karposh uprising, then expanding pastures, selling timber for survival, etc.), the environment becomes completely degraded. The lack of forests, soils, surface waters, make living conditions in the vicinity of Tsotsev Kamen dramatically worse, while excessive erosion, droughts, floods and deposition with sediments prevails. Such an unfavorable situation in this area continued until today. Tsotsev Kamen however, remained a vivid testament to human activities in the past and his primordial relationship with nature.

used in the production of chipped stone tools collected during the excavation of Rug Bair. Through the analyses of the stone artifacts, an attempt was made at constructing a more comprehensive picture of the raw materials and petrologic characteristics
of the chipped stone industry at Rug Bair. The stone tools from Neolithic sites in the Republic of Macedonia have not been thoroughly analyzed in terms of raw materials. The absence of this analysis complicates the identification of the raw materials that were used by the inhabitants within the Neolithic settlements in Macedonia, including their provenance, the geographical distribution area in which the residents were moving, as well as the question of interaction with other simultaneous populations.

ABSTRACT
In this paper are presented geomorphological and geoarchaeological characteristics of Tsotsev Kamen site which is located in the village Shopsko Rudare near Kratovo. Actually, Tsotsev Kamen is remarkable like rock, built in andesitic ignimbrites with numerous denudation landforms on the surface and around. Except these natural forms, different anthropogenic interventions like steps, basins, pools etc., are clearly visible in the rock. For that reasons, some archaeologists assume
Tsotsev Kamen as a sacral place and even megalithic observatory."
In 2013, in an attempt to transfer the artifacts from the old to the new building of the Archaeological Museum in Skopje, curators discovered one of the biggest thefts ever registered in Macedonia. More than one hundred gold artifacts from the period of Antiquity were missing. This event calls into question not only the security, but also the overall management of cultural heritage. Instead of having these findings published in archaeological journals, they will probably end up in private collections, without any hope to become available to the public. This project is dedicated to the Macedonian museums and to every other museum in the world, which by the similarity of circumstances can be the subject of looting and destruction.
The independence of Macedonia after the dissolution of Yugoslavia has contributed for political reality to reflect in many fields, including archaeology. The break-up with the tradition to which Macedonian archaeology was linked both methodologically and conceptually for almost 50 years made it necessary for it to become self-reliant. Lacking experts, unable to produce new professionals, or introduce new traditions, in a region marked by conflict due to its multi-ethnic nature, the results reflected in Macedonian archaeology in terms of a lack of basic excavations, as well as in the absence of multidisciplinary research. Stuck in the past, it would probably be helpful in this process of transition to do a complete reevaluation of Macedonian archaeology as a whole, including certain periods which outdated chronology needs to be rejected or confirmed in the light of new findings, international trends and hypotheses. This paper will present an overview of Macedonian archaeology in the past 20 years, and the challenges it is facing after gaining independence from former Yugoslavia. It will present views that reflect the current condition in Macedonian archaeology, expressed in terms of statistical analysis.
In this work we would like to present the results of the Neolithic chipped stone artefacts form the territory of Republic of Macedonia. Analyses have been done within basic raw material categories, which provide certain specific information. Neolithic stone assemblages on territory of the Republic of Macedonia point at a huge range of used raw materials, of which the dominant is the chalcedony with grey colour and its varieties well-known under the term flint. However, in all these collections we should emphasize the presence of chalcedony with yellow-brown or honey colour with inclusion (sporadic whitish spots) well known and often referred to in the literature as Balkan Platform flint. Most of the Neolithic assemblages in Macedonia contain artefacts from this type of raw material in a shape of pre-designed tools, which are subject of this article.
The tribulum - or dikanj (a) as it is called in this area - is an agriculture tool used to separate the chaff from the wheat. Archaeological findings offer evidence of its use from prehistoric to our time, from various nations. Given the locations where it was found, previously it was associated with the Mediterranean area was considered its typical element. The lack of any records of trubulums specimens found on the territory of the Republic of Macedonia, had lead to the leaving out of this particular area from the interest in this topic, focusing primarily on the Mediterranean.
Latest research indicate that this type of farm implement was present in the Republic of Macedonia, thus expanding the area of its use. Ethnographic notes about this region, as well as the large number of preserved specimens are testimony to the continuity and the use of tribulum in Macedonia up until 1955.
So far the tribulum has not been the subject of in-depth analysis of the archaeology and ethnology in the Republic of Macedonia, and yet this topic raises many dynamic questions and remains open for further debate.
Neolithic Studies 19
Although the number of Neolithic sites excavated in the territory of the Republic of Macedonia is considerable, the stone tools pertinent to these sites are still less known because they have never interested investigators. The results of surveys in the Kratovo-Zletovo area and analysesof stone assemblages from several archaeological sites of the Amzabegovo-Vr∏nik culture point to a system of local supply for stone tools used by the local communities. Nineteen years after Macedonia gained its independence, the process of transition did not bring any great changes in terms of the cultural heritage, including archaeology. For the time being, apart from rare exceptions, the only supporter in the field of archaeology is the Government. The significant interest of the current government of R. Macedonia for archaeology, led to financial investment in excavations in which the emphasis was placed upon the antique (mostly Hellenistic) period. To achieve the additional goal of this campaign (dubbed by many people as “antique”), the new media - websites and blogs - was put to use. Actually, the so-called scientific argumentation in favour of the existence of the so- called antiquization mainly took place on the web. Mostly it was a virtual war on two fronts: between those people who support, and those who deny Government work. This situation pulls out some new terms in the Macedonian language as the "antiquization" and "bucephalization" and increased frequency of their use. Despite the fact that they have ambiguous etymologic origin, these terms were introduced for the first time through the new media and succeeded in spreading them among the public, causing inferiority in the attempt of their understanding, defining and interpretation. But the Republic of Macedonia is neither the first nor the last country that leads the current political processes for the recognition of a state under its constitutional name, under the cover of the archaeology of identity. In their own game, in an attempt to be recognized by demonstrating the proof that they are the successors to the historical past, the states often (ab)use the archaeological data in the disputes they lead. This paper presents some of these aspects, settled through and beyond the mainstream and the new media in Macedonia.

Macedonia Vision (http://www.macedoniavision.com) is a project designed for tourist purposes. Itis concerned with the promotion of both natural and cultural heritage of the Republic of Macedonia. The project has (advertises) its own web site, along with two maps, two brochures and a selection of catalogs in several different languages. The project’s aim - apart from its promotional dimension- is to manage Macedonia’s cultural heritage and on an educative level to offer professionalsworking in the field of tourism (e.g. tourist guides) a foundation for the standardization and quality of the information presented to the general public. With regard to the intellectual category of the cultural heritage, the final step in the promotion of Macedonia’s cultural heritage is based on three years of painstaking work encompassing the selection of information and developing a strategy for heritage management. The attempt to manage and present the tremendous amount of selected elements of cultural heritage from Macedonia through tourist evaluation, earned ample help from all governmental institutions engaged with cultural aspects in general. All the information, available resources and newly available technologies, including new media, were used to further this goal. The printed and web-based materials have two objectives: a promotional and an educative one. Regarding the plethora of cultural heritage in the Republic of Macedonia, the next stage in the project was to manage the human resources dealing with tourism and cultural heritage in general. For this purpose the Travel Training Center (http://www.ttc.mk), based in Skopje, was established. The positive effects towards a sustainable tourism from the cultural heritage management that this project advocates are yet to be demonstrated.
Archaeotechnology: studying technology from prehistory to the Middle Ages (session convenors: Selena Vitezović and Dragana Antonović)
This paper will present the results of both field investigations in the Kratovo-Zletovo area, a volcanic region where large amounts of pyroclastic material, such as volcanic bombs, can be found, and of wear-use analyses of these same ecofacts. Due to their symmetrical rounded and oval forms these ecofacts were incorporated/articulated/amalgamated into the architecture as decorative elements, and were apart from this probably used in other ways in everyday life of the prehistoric societies that settled this area. Volcanic bombs are actually pebbles with very good abrasive qualities. Consisting of andesite, a very solid and strong rock, they can be used in the process of making and shaping chipped, polished or abrasive tools. On the basis of stone material such as volcanic bombs that are very specific and characteristic for the RM, an attempt was made to investigate the possible anthropologic use(s) of these natural phenomena and the technological methods of manufacturing stone tools.
In the period 2009 to 2014, the Northeast region of Macedonia has seen the implementation of several projects, including the creation of strategies for the development of tourism in general; evaluation study of natural and cultural potentials for development of alternative tourism; and study for mapping the travel routes and setting up information charts. These projects were mostly focused on identification and evaluation of natural and cultural resources, at the same time representing community values. Due to the diversity of resources, the influence of its results was estimated to affect long-term planning in many spheres regarding the local development.
An attempt was made to create a significant number of tourist products, for the benefit of the tourists, as well as the local community, by generating economic development. As a conclusion, we would like to point out that the most important determinant in promoting natural and cultural resources is a thematic unit based on the identification of similar or the same locations that build a product. Thus, the main goal of any tourist product based on heritage is to make itself recognizable in local, regional, but also international frames.
The author investigated the possible ways of procurement and distribution of the raw material in an attempt to reconstruct and gain a more comprehensive picture about its technical and typological characteristics. The identification followed by chemical analyses will confirm the pattern or rule out the link of the chipped stone material from prehistoric assemblages with its ‘original’ source.

In many of the post – socialist countries, there are debates about the architecture and the symbolism of this cultural heritage, but also about its potential. In Skopje, the socialist cultural heritage is often ignored, as opposed to the newly created cultural heritage.
This event will address the following questions: How the post – earthquake and socialist Skopje and its cultural heritage are defined in the public and professional discourse? Is knowledge invested in this heritage? Are we working on socially acceptable and positive means for dealing with this cultural heritage in a way that will not be grossly ignored and completely erased from the public space? What are the reasons for the (dis)interest of the socialist, material and cultural heritage and its monumental art? What is the cultural, economics and social potential of this past and how does it fit in today’s urban plans and the contemporary space design?

St. Atanas is an archaeological site form late Neolithic/Early Eneolithic which comprises few extraordinary features. The biggest challenge is the largest collection of clay anthropomorphic figurines known so far at a single site in the Republic of Macedonia that has been discovered. The whole process of recipe, making, breaking and offering the figurines was possible to be determined from the technological aspect.
The workshop was organized by UCL Institute of Archaeology and Institute for Balkan studies (Serbian academy of science and art)

For a long time Republic of Macedonia was terra blanca in the field of rock art and prehistoric rock painting. That is, until the discovery of Cocev Kamen, a rock from a volcanic origin consisting of caves and rock-shelters. It is believed that Cocev Kamen had been used as a temple from prehistoric times (Neolithic/Bronze age), throughout Roman times, up until the Middle Ages, due to the surrounding archaeological sites and the abundance of pottery fragments, as well as the flint tools.
There are visible interventions on the stone surface everywhere, in the form of stairs, pools, thrones, and one big cave was completely rearranged, with a large part of its wall ripped off to make a fenced platform looking at the nearby hill, which contains big natural stones interpreted by the locals as megaliths. Considering the sacred purposes of the site combined, it is also believed that Cocev Kamen had been used as a prehistoric observatory, hypothesis which is not proved yet by the science. This topic instigated a big debate in Macedonian archaeology through the media, but none of the opinions made have been confirmed yet with a scientific paper.
Some of the rock shelters are decorated with red figurative prehistoric rock art. The comparison with caves in Bulgaria, but especially with some rock paintings in Italy (such as Porto Badisco), indicates that these rock paintings belong to prehistory. Currently we are working on a scientifically paper to make a comparison of Cocev Kamen with some Balkan sites or maybe wider. Wish us a luck, because the site and science deserve for Cocev Kamen to be made known to a wider public.
One project of utmost importance in the field of Open Educational Resources (OER) is that of Wikipedia, the open encyclopedia The scope of knowledge, information and content pertaining to all areas of science, history, technology and popular culture make Wikipedia a truly unique project of global relevance. Given the importance of Wikipedia for the OER, the workshops conducted by OER Macedonia include a Wikipedia learning and training module. This module was prepared and implemented byVasilka Dimitrovska,MA, co-founder of Haemus and a long-time member of Wikimedia Macedonia. For this purpose, Ms. Dimitrovska prepared several presentations in order to present useful Wikipedia tools for sharing open knowledge. Participants from all the universities in the Republic of Macedonia were familiarized with the techniques and tools of this open collaborative encyclopedia and were invited to contribute content pertaining to the specific areas of their scholarly interest.
Due to its location in the vicinity of Skopje, Skopska Crna Gora Mountain (Skopje’s Black Mountain) provides magnificent pleasure in both, nature and cultural heritage. The landscape is intersected with many picturesque valleys and waterways, favorable climate lush in flora and fauna, and side by side village with authentic traditional architecture, beautifully vineyards, orchards, meadows and gardens with many sheepfolds and mills. A number of archaeological sites and especially the enormous concentration of preserved Byzantine churches on such a small area, gave the name of this location as the holly mountain of Skopje. Different ethnicities, reflecting the multi-ethnic and multicultural Macedonia, can be seen in the traditional folk costumes and clothes embroideries.
The project consists of identification, evaluation, and conservation of cultural resources such as heritage sites, objects, landscapes, and traditions and it strives to identify, document, evaluate, and represent community values. It demands expertise in archaeology, history, ethnography, anthropology, art history and architecture but the influence of the results can affect long-term planning in many spheres.
