Two EASY Holiday STEM Ideas for Kindergarten!

Image
This post is from a few years ago when I wasn't teaching remotely, but I wanted to share it again for any teachers or parents that may be looking for some fun Holiday STEM ideas! Read on! :) Today I am super excited to share TWO fun and easy STEM ideas that I did this month with my TKs! The first idea is called “Santa’s Chimney Challenge,” and the second is “Build a Shelf for the Elf.” The kids absolutely LOVED them both, and you KNOW that if these ideas work well in TK, then they will surely work in Kindergarten and first grade, (and probably even Pre-K, too!) Both of these activities were easy enough for the kids to do by themselves, which is a HUGE plus- am I right?  And that is really the trick when planning any STEM activity for young children.  You have to find the right balance between challenge and what’s possible for your students in order for them to really enjoy it.  If it’s too easy, it’s loses its excitement.  If it’s too hard, they can get d...

Let’s Build a Snowman – Singable Book & STEM Project!

I am excited to share TWO really fun winter ideas with you:  our Let’s Build a Snowman Singable Book Project for kids to make & read, and a fun, new STEM idea for your little ones:  a Marshmallow Snowman! Some of you might remember this little Let’s Build a Snowman book when we released it a few years ago.  I decided to update the book to meet my class’ needs a little better and make it less repetitive.  So the file now contains both the longer original version, and the shortened version shown in the pictures that follow it. A Draw and Tell Story: The Curious Little Mouse

Image
I have been wanting to write a “Draw and Tell” story for quite a while and share it on my blog, but the thing that has been holding me back is the need to break the artwork for the story down into tiny steps and save each one as a separate step.  That takes a while!  I also wanted this story to be seasonally appropriate, but not holiday oriented so that everyone might be able to use it.  I keep hearing from teachers that are unable to use any lesson plans that have a connection to a holiday, etc.  My school doesn’t have any such restrictions (at least not so far!)  Nobody really seems to care or object if the children make a Santa project or a candy cane.  BUT, I do feel bad for those of you that teach in places where that is a no-no.  So, with that in mind, I created a story about a mouse and a snowman.  Hopefully, nobody has found a reason to object to a mouse or a snowman, other than the fact that they may be a little too cute or a little ...
