Today I’m going to talk about the amazing biodiversity of Colombia. If we look at the number of
species of animals in the countries around the world, we find that Colombia ranks very highly in
many areas. For example:
• Colombia ranks first in the world for the number of different species of birds. There are
1,870 different species of birds in our country. We also rank first in the world for number of
species of land vertebrates and orchids. I love those beautiful flowers … they’re my
favourites!
• Colombia ranks second in the world for the number of species of butterflies and amphibians.
Yes, we have lots of frogs!
• Colombia ranks third for the number of different species of reptiles. We have 520 different
types of reptiles, and our country is also third for palm trees.
• Finally, in the world ranking for mammals, Colombia comes fourth. So, as you can see,
Colombia has an amazing variety of plant and animal life. Thank you for listening.

Zoo guide: Welcome to Matecaña Zoo. We hope you have a good time observing all the
different species of animals we have here and we hope you’ll learn a lot, too. But, first of all, I
want to give you some rules about what to do and what not to do. So, here are our dos and don’ts:
1. Do not feed the animals.
2. Do not disturb the animals in any way. That means not touching them or trying to catch them.
3. Do not sit or stand on the exhibit barriers. They are there for your safety.
4. Keep your rubbish with you and put it in the bins.
5. Do not make a lot of noise. That means no noisy games that can disturb the animals.
6. Do not pick any flowers or plants.
Anyway, that’s all for now, so let’s start the tour of the zoo! Enjoy your visit!
3. Read the rules for visiting a national park (1–7) and match them to the signs (a–g).
