The current approach to the development of a building information modelling (BIM) standard or guideline has provisioned for each individual authority in a unique way. There has been no universally standardized format, content or defined concepts employed in document development from one organization or region to the next. Though format and content vary widely according to the specific document scope and context, many published BIM guides around the world define the same, or similar, terms and concepts. The BIM guides project is the first attempt to leverage these existing publications within an open process of peer review and consensus standardization. It is believed that this structured approach to BIM document development will deliver increased efficiency in the creation and implementation of future Guidelines and Standards, contributing to the adoption and standardization of BIM within industry and providing the much needed universal baseline from which the many user-types of BIM...

We present the first measurements of a photoelectron circular dichroism in photoionization from O and 1s core levels of the R-enantiomer of glycidol (C 3 H 6 O 2 ) in the gas phase. This dichroism emerges from a forward-backward asymmetry in the angular distribution of electrons created on ionization with circularly polarised synchrotron radiation and is already fully present in the pure electric dipole approximation. Asymmetry factors obtained for the core levels in this study range up to a few percent, but it is likely that these values are limited by a failure to resolve photoemission from individual atomic sites. Theoretical modelling is provided to examine potential differences between these alternative atomic photoemission sites, and between different conformational structures of glycidol. The calculated chiral angular distribution parameters that support the circular dichroism display a much enhanced sensitivity to the molecular conformation compared to the conventional photoionization cross-section and the β-parameter. Likely conformer structures can be suggested after comparison with the experiment.

In this paper, we explore the evolution of modelling practices used to develop three significant Heritage Building Information Models (HBIM) on Canada's Parliament Hill National Historic Site-West Block, Centre Block, and The Library of Parliament. The unique scope, objective, and timeline for each model required an in-depth analysis to select the appropriate classification for Level of Detail (LOD) and Level of Accuracy (LOA). With each project, the refinement of modelling practices and workflows evolved, culminating in one of our most complex and challenging projects-the Library of Parliament BIM. The purpose of this paper is to share ideas and lessons learned for the intricate challenges that emerge when using LOD and LOA classifications including trade-offs between model performance, tolerances, and anticipated BIM use. In addition, we will evaluate how these decisions effected managing the digitization, data processing, data synthesis, and visualisation of the models.

Virtual reality (VR) provides a unique opportunity for sharing culturally significant spaces that are not physically accessible. For an effective portrayal of these spaces, it is beneficial to use digital assets that are developed with geometrically data, such as building information models (BIM). Unfortunately, the conversion of BIM to a publicly accessible VR is fraught with challenges. A process for translating a complex BIM to a curated publicly accessible VR by organizing the elements into four defined "geometry levels" is developed in this work and examined using the case study of the centre block of the Parliament Hill national historic site of Canada.

In 2012, the Carleton Immersive Media Studio (CIMS) started a research relationship with Public Services and Procurement Canada to develop a building information model (BIM) of the Parliament Hill National Historic Site of Canada. The model was created to facilitate a multi-year rehabilitation of the site and was developed using both historical records and highly detailed geo-referenced point cloud data. In the process of planning the model, CIMS developed a unique Level of Detail (LOD) specification for heritage buildings that, in addition to standard specifications, considered cultural heritage value as part of the LOD. As the rehabilitation project unfolded, the possibility of using the BIM for public engagement through the creation of virtual reality (VR) experiences was proposed. This paper proposes a design for libraries of European Classical architectural elements based on shape grammars. This design is based on a workflow which develops library objects from 3D CAD primitives using architectural rules to construct parametric representations of architectural elements. In the case of Classical architecture, the design and detail for the parametric objects are based on manuscripts ranging from Vitruvius to Palladio to the architectural pattern books of the eighteenth century. The generation of 3D objects for virtual reconstruction necessitates the application of computer algorithms and rules introduced by the user to generate objects, buildings and spaces from a grammar and vocabulary of shapes. Both the use of graphicly constructed and coded parametric libraries in formal and open-source platforms will be considered here.

Building Information Modeling (BIM) enhances the sharing of information during the traditional process for new construction, but most of the time, it requires high levels of knowledge management for the historical digital model (H-BIM). The innovation in the Digital Cultural Heritage (DCH) domain is supported by the development of Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) and modern tools that are able to transmit morphological characteristics of the buildings in all their uniqueness. The latest research in the field of H-BIM shows a significant emergence of innovative methods and management initiatives for the generation of complex historical elements, leading to the confrontation of the paradigm of regularity (simple geometric shapes) with the new paradigm of complexity (historical building elements). This paper proves the benefits of the BIM for project management of the Centre Block of the Canadian Parliament in Ottawa, Ontario Canada, and shows the results obtained by the introduction of Advanced Modeling Techniques (AMT) during the generative process, reducing time and cost for the creation of the complex architectural and structural elements. The uniqueness of the forms of historical buildings is a real value to be transmitted throughout the building's lifecycle with high Levels of Detail (LOD). Proper management of geometric primitives and Non-Uniform Rational Basis Spline (NURBS) models have guaranteed the conversion of spatial data (point clouds) from laser scanning and photogrammetry (geometric survey) into parametric applications.
