Building Information Modeling (BIM) enhances the sharing of information during the traditional pr... more Building Information Modeling (BIM) enhances the sharing of information during the traditional process for new construction, but most of the time, it requires high levels of knowledge management for the historical digital model (H-BIM). The innovation in the Digital Cultural Heritage (DCH) domain is supported by the development of Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) and modern tools that are able to transmit morphological characteristics of the buildings in all their uniqueness. The latest research in the field of H-BIM shows a significant emergence of innovative methods and management initiatives for the generation of complex historical elements, leading to the confrontation of the paradigm of regularity (simple geometric shapes) with the new paradigm of complexity (historical building elements). This paper proves the benefits of the BIM for project management of the Centre Block of the Canadian Parliament in Ottawa, Ontario Canada, and shows the results obtained by the introduction of Advanced Modeling Techniques (AMT) during the generative process, reducing time and cost for the creation of the complex architectural and structural elements. The uniqueness of the forms of historical buildings is a real value to be transmitted throughout the building's lifecycle with high Levels of Detail (LOD). Proper management of geometric primitives and Non-Uniform Rational Basis Spline (NURBS) models have guaranteed the conversion of spatial data (point clouds) from laser scanning and photogrammetry (geometric survey) into parametric applications. This paper explores the generative process of one of the most complex spaces within The Centre Block building of Parliament Hill-Confederation Hall.

This paper proposes a design for libraries of European Classical architectural elements based on ... more This paper proposes a design for libraries of European Classical architectural elements based on shape grammars. This design is based on a workflow which develops library objects from 3D CAD primitives using architectural rules to construct parametric representations of architectural elements. In the case of Classical architecture, the design and detail for the parametric objects are based on manuscripts ranging from Vitruvius to Palladio to the architectural pattern books of the eighteenth century. The generation of 3D objects for virtual reconstruction necessitates the application of computer algorithms and rules introduced by the user to generate objects, buildings and spaces from a grammar and vocabulary of shapes. Both the use of graphicly constructed and coded parametric libraries in formal and open-source platforms will be considered here.

Virtual reality (VR) provides a unique opportunity for sharing culturally significant spaces that... more Virtual reality (VR) provides a unique opportunity for sharing culturally significant spaces that are not physically accessible. For an effective portrayal of these spaces, it is beneficial to use digital assets that are developed with geometrically data, such as building information models (BIM). Unfortunately, the conversion of BIM to a publicly accessible VR is fraught with challenges. A process for translating a complex BIM to a curated publicly accessible VR by organizing the elements into four defined "geometry levels" is developed in this work and examined using the case study of the centre block of the Parliament Hill national historic site of Canada.

In this paper, we explore the evolution of modelling practices used to develop three significant ... more In this paper, we explore the evolution of modelling practices used to develop three significant Heritage Building Information Models (HBIM) on Canada's Parliament Hill National Historic Site-West Block, Centre Block, and The Library of Parliament. The unique scope, objective, and timeline for each model required an in-depth analysis to select the appropriate classification for Level of Detail (LOD) and Level of Accuracy (LOA). With each project, the refinement of modelling practices and workflows evolved, culminating in one of our most complex and challenging projects-the Library of Parliament BIM. The purpose of this paper is to share ideas and lessons learned for the intricate challenges that emerge when using LOD and LOA classifications including trade-offs between model performance, tolerances, and anticipated BIM use. In addition, we will evaluate how these decisions effected managing the digitization, data processing, data synthesis, and visualisation of the models.
