INTRODUCTION
 Background of the Study
Hosanna is a rapidly growing city with a traffic management
system relying solely on roundabout intersection. This growth
has led to congestion and safety issues, underlining the need
for an in-depth evaluation of roundabout performance.

Roundabouts emerged in the UK in the 1960s to address


inefficiencies of
traditional traffic systems

Literatures has been developed on different types of


intersections through out the world to manage traffic
performance issues, of those some will be used as reference
for the study area.
Statement of Problem
 Urban Growth: Increased traffic, roundabouts at full
capacity.
 Limited road infrastructure and increasing vehicle
numbers.
 Knowledge Gap: No clear understanding of roundabout
efficiency or safety.
 Generally, many of the intersections in Hosanna City are
traditional stop-controlled designs, which often fail to
accommodate the rising traffic volumes. The lack of
modern traffic management solutions has led to
inefficiencies.
General Objective
 Evaluating the existing capacity and performance of
roundabout intersections for the City to implement the
remedial measures.

Specific Objectives
 To quantify traffic volume and other identified significant
factors tend to affect performance level of the roundabout.
 To analyze the capacity and performance of existing
roundabout using using SIDRA INTERSECTION Software.
 To identify the significant factors affecting the Capacity and
Performance level of roundabout
Research questions

 How traffic volume was quantified, and other significant


factors tend to affect performance level of the
roundabout was identified?
 How the existing capacity and performance of
roundabout was analyzed?
 What were the significant factors affecting capacity and
Performance Level of the roundabout?
 What were the remedial measures that could be
suggested to improve the intersection?
Significance of the Study

 Academic contribution, bridge the gap in research on


roundabouts in Ethipia traffic conditions

 Practical impacts, propose actionable solutions to


reduce congestion and improve traffic safety for hosanna

 Economic and environmental benefits, reduce fuel


consumption and air pollution by improving traffic flow
Literature Review

 This section discusses the current literature concerning the


definition of Roundabout, methods of roundabout capacity
evaluation, factors that affect the capacity of roundabout,
level of service and performance of roundabout based on
queue length, Level of Service, delay, degree of saturation
and it concludes with an overview of impacts due to
inadequacy of roundabout capacity and possible remedial
measures.
 The concept of roundabouts, its types and factors
affecting the roundabout cap were discussed some
of the factors are Geometric Configuration, Number
of Lanes and Lane width, Drivers and Vehicles
Characteristics, and Pedestrian effects on entry
capacity
Methodology
 The areas of study were visited and selected based upon
those assumed to have more problems and appropriate
for research and aimed to solve the problem of traffic
congestion in Hosanna City.
 Secondly, after the sites were identified two roundabouts
were selected, intensive review of literature associated
with the title of the research will be collected and
geometric data and traffic data of these roundabouts
were collected.
 Thirdly the received data was prepared as appropriate
for input of software using SIDRA intersection software.
 Survey Methods, interviews with local drivers and
pedsterians to understand usability issues.
 Evaluation of the roundabout intersections will focus on
Expected Results

 Comprehensive evaluation of roundabout capacity


in Hosanna.
 Identification of factors limiting efficiency (e.g.,
geometric design, traffic volume).
 Practical recommendations for:
o Reducing congestion.
o Improving LOS and traffic safety.
o Supporting sustainable urban mobility.
