MELC 4: Derive inductively

the relations among chords,

arcs, central angles, and
inscribed angles
What is a circle? What are its parts?

●A circle is a shape consisting of all points equidistant from a fixed point

called the center. A circle is named by a letter that represents the center.
Term Definition
*A straight line segment that extends from the center to any
point on the circle.
radius
*All radii of the same circle are congruent.
*The measure of the radius is one-half the measure of diameter.
chord A straight line segment whose endpoints both lie on the circle
*It is a chord that passes through the center of the circle.
diameter
*Its measure is twice the measure of the radius.
Semicircl An arc with a measure equal to 180⁰ or one-half
e the circumference of a unit circle
Arc A portion of the circumference of a circle with “
“ symbol
Minor arc An arc of a circle that measures greater than 0⁰ but
less than 180⁰. Two capital letters are used to name the
arc.
Major arc An arc of a circle that measures greater than 180⁰
but less than 360⁰. Three capital letters are used to name
the arc.
Central An angle formed by two rays whose vertex is the
angle center of the circle
inscribed An angle whose vertex is on the circle and whose
angle sides contain the chords of the circle

*Intercepted arc is an arc that lies in the
interior of an inscribed angle and has
endpoints on the angle.

Relationships among central angles, intercepted
arcs and inscribed angles
ʘC is the name of the circle
A B
ACB is a central angle
ADB is an inscribed angle
AB is an intercepted arc C
*Intercepted arc is an arc that lies in the interior of an inscribed angle
and has endpoints on the angle. D
A. The measure of a central angle is equal to the measure of its intercepted arc.
m ACB = m AB
B. The measure of an inscribed angle is equal to one-half the measure of the central angle.
m ADB = ½ mACB
C. The measure of an inscribed angle is equal to one-half the measure of its intercepted arc.
m ADB = ½ m AB
